  1. Don’t forget med schools and pharmacy schools.  I attended UT pharmacy around the turn of the century. It was rated #2 back then and has always been at least top 4.

I remember distinctly being taught by a world renowned expert that if opioid pain medications are prescribed and used properly for legitimate pain, there was no chance of addiction.  I remember thinking it didn’t sound right, but that is how I answered on the exam, because grades.

It pisses me off that I paid to be fed that horseshit.

  2. I heard the Playin from that show on my way home from work on TIGDH today and it sounded great.  I need to listen to the rest soon.

I am actually at Billy Strings in Austin right now during setbreak.  Highly recommend checking him out.  I don’t know much of his music, but they are pretty great live.

Sad that I missed St Stephen > The Eleven by one day, I was at the Dallas show. The Dallas show was great though.

You did get the Help>Slip>Frank though.

I was so excited to see St. Stephen >Wm Tell>The Eleven.  That has been high on my list ever since they brought it back with The Other Ones.

The whole sequence from Here Come’s Sunshine through Milestones was incredible.  We were maybe 15 yards up in the lawn a little right of center and the sound was fantastic.  The sound at the Erwin Center show a few years ago was terrible where I was sitting (I could barely here bass or keyboards), so this was a nice change.

A funny thing happened at setbreak when a young -18year old girl asked a big long-haired Hispanic dude near us if it was his picture on his shirt.  It was Jerry García.  LOL.

  4. I’ll be at The Woodlands.  Dallas didn’t pan out.  I am pretty sure we are in the lawn.

to get ready, I pulled out one of my favorite vinyl releases 11/18/72 in Houston.  The Playin is as good as they get and the Greatest Story, Deal, and Mississippi Half-Step all are great versions too.

And the artwork rules, even though it doesn’t quite evoke Houston.

Jealous of anyone going tonight-have fun!

  5. If you are into musicals, the Come from Away film is really good.  It is a  9/11 (or really 9/12) Broadway musical filmed similar to Hamilton on Disney+.  It is about all the people who landed in Gander, Newfoundland and how the community took care of them.

CSB:  in 2016 we went to Newfoundland and to get excited for the trip we listened to the cast recording a lot and my daughters fell in love with it.  Newfoundland is possibly my favorite place I’ve visited and I couldn’t recommend going there more.  The people are wonderful and there are so many beautiful places.

Our family saw the touring production at Bass in February 2020, and it was great.  It was the last big crowd thing we did before COVID hit.

  6. I have been listening to the May Dave’s Pick due to the date (9/8/73 with 9/7 filler).

They are really well-played shows.  The Other One Jam>Eyes of the World from the 7th is awesome.  The Eyes is quickly becoming one of my favorite versions.

I’ve posted Pride of Cucamonga before. It’s a great song that I never understood why it didn’t get played live. I guess because of the pedal steel that Jerry played? Did Jerry ever play the pedal live with the Grateful Dead?

I believe he did in 69 and maybe 70.  The Good ole Grateful Deadcast had really good seasons about making Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty that covered this era. There are a few versions of Dire Wolf out there with Jerry on steel and Bob singing lead.  Check out 6/21/69.

Phil sang at all three of my shows.  I got to hear Broken Arrow, Just Like Tom Thumb Blues, and Box of Rain.  I didn't realize how uncommon it was for Phil to sing back then.  I just figured it was pretty normal.

And I have to agree with WTB about Dylan.  As I've stated here before, I love a lot of his songs when other people play/sing them.

I saw Box of Rain at the same show as Hate and then at my last show (5/21/95 in Vegas) Phil sang both Tom Thumb and Unbroken Chain.  Likewise, I did not realize how special that was at the time.

and I am not going to argue with anyone that covers of Dylan songs are usually better than the original, just that there are a very few versions done by him that excel to the point where they are my favorite.  To each his own.

Not Dylan, but another Jerry cover that I prefer over any other version is the After Midnight on the Don’t Let Go JGB release.  It smokes.

I’m not seeing anything but Jerry Garcia Live Vol. II was from the Greek Theatre on 8/5/90. I’ve got that on CD. And I can’t think of any Dylan song that I don’t like better hearing performed by the Dead than by Dylan. That goes for a lot of Dead covers.

Bob Dylan can be hit and miss, but there is so much stuff that fucking rules once you dig.  The Like a Rolling Stone from the Dylan and The Band 1974 release cannot be topped.

The Bootleg Series Rolling Thunder Review release is incredible.  I will take the It’s All Over Now Baby Blue and Tangled up in Blue from that release over any Dead version any day.  His duets with Joan Baez on that are brilliant too (Mama You Been on My Mind).  This release make me wish this was always his band.  I am listening to it now, and the Mr Tambourine Man makes me rethink the song every time I hear it.  Just brilliant!

I do agree that there is a lot where I would choose the Dead (or other artists) version first, but don’t sleep on Dylan.  His best stuff is the tops.

  10. I love Phil doing Broken Arrow. I really enjoy the version from the 30 Trips compilation,.  His voice quality is questionable, but his cadence fucking owns and sells the song.

And speaking of Dylan, the Visions of Johanna from 95 on the 30 Trips release kills.  I love finding good live versions of anything from their last couple years since that is the era In which I saw them.  They feel special in that I could have (or did) see it live.  I just realized that my last show, 5/21/95 in Vegas has a soundboard out.  It was a refreshingly decent show!

Lulz. Go ahead and refer to Phish 4.0. Say it to other phans in the lot. See how that works out for you. Don’t be surprised when they just look at you with a puzzled look on their faces.

First, this thread is amazing and no doubt explaining the phenomenon of Phish to the uninitiated.

I have heard some of the DJs on Phish Radio on Sirius refer to the current tour as 4.0 as have some of the folks on my Phish nerd group on FB.  I think 4.0 might stick.  I can’t imagine caring enough to argue about it though.  Really, who cares?

also, I didn’t see them until fall of 95 (~20 shows). I don’t consider myself any more or less of a fan of than any of you.  Everyone has different life circumstances. This claiming of status re these metrics is stupid as shit.

Not really.  They have lots of songs to start shows ranging from Morning Dew to Bertha.  And Whiskey River is a song I wish they had covered.  It would have been a perfect song for them.

Edit: At my 3 shows I got Touch of Grey (twice) and Jack Straw.

Edit #2: it appears that Jack Straw was the most song played to open a show at 192 times.

I got Touch once , Mississippi half step twice, and Jack Straw once.  I got Dave’s 39 in the mail today and can’t wait to give it a listen.  Most early 80s shows, other than 11-30-80, fail to grab my attention,  so I hope this one does.

I'm only a couple of songs in and this is already a great show.  The recording is out fucking standing!

Love that show!  Is that the Dark Star where they go into the proto-slipknot?

While it's true that academically UT is closer to Michigan, Illinois, etc, there's no rule saying researchers can't collaborate outside their own athletic conference. The parallels people try to draw are really dumb.

My father in law is faculty at UT and the only big 12 collaborator he has ever mentioned is a former post-doc of his.  He mostly works with with people at places like Stanford, Cal Tech , MIT, Cambridge, etc.  Conference affiliation doesn’t mean shit.

I think they will put Aggie in a different pod to appease them. I would be okay with Tx, OU, Ark, Mo.

This is my ideal pod.  We get two traditional rivals in our pod, and A&M would be relegated to third in importance to us as a rival.  They are also no more than the second or third most important game of the year for any other school in the SEC.  it would really cement their place in the pecking order.  They earned this.

  16. I heard the 89 Alpine Valley Foolish Heart on the way home on #TIGDH.  Great version.  I love the middle jam in that song.  The version from Fare Thee Well is one of my favorites from that run.  Trey really nails it.

I don't know where all of the Dead Heads went, but I'm up listening to 7/17/89-7/19/89.  This is the Downhill From Here show that is a compilation of their 3 day run in Wisconsin from Alpine Valley.

I still have my VHS tape of that.  I love that run and era.  I haven’t heard better versions  of West LA Fadeaway or Deal than those there.  There is a part in the peak of the Deal where Billy is playing so hard his face looks like he is having a seizure.  Good stuff.

I am currently listening to the Billy and the Kids w/Billy Stings from red rocks last week through ReListen. Really nice shows.  There are some really good videos on YouTube including this So Many Roads

From night 1, there is an excellent sequence of Scarlet>Sitting in Limbo>Eyes>Bird Song>Other One>Bird Song followed by the SMR posted above.  The Eyes is really nice.

My kid loves the Nathan Hale books; knows more about WWI and such than I do because of them, but also the Guts & Glory series may have a Medieval book. I know they have a Viking book which was around that same time I think?

Same here.  They are graphic novels and really well done but I think they focus on US history. The Donner Dinner Party one is my daughter’s favorite.

  19. There are multiple copies of each available on the Relisten app (I think this grabs streams from archive.org).  I use this for any Dead/Phish shows I don’t own or aren’t on Spotify.

I gave those shows a sample listen and the quality isn’t what I would hope.  I will never understand how recordings from 40 or more years ago can be so phenomenal while many from their last few years sound so shitty.  I know their playing isn’t as good, but the quality of the mix really gets in the way of my enjoyment on a lot of them
