It's Crosby's first-person experience of D-Day, not the definitive retelling. He couldn't tell when it happened either, and despite being at the center of the planning was completely separated from the execution of the operation itself.

This show at its core is a retelling on his book and the show is even narrated by Cros, so it makes sense to me narratively

Maybe, but they further confused it by showing the perspective from the POW camp and intertwining the Tuskegee story line.  When the POWs are trying to decipher the German freak-out, you can't tell if it's misinformation, pre-invasion or post-invasion.  Plus, they did show Rosenthal's perspective, but did it retroactively and didn't actually show anything he did on D-Day. Just weird all the way around. It felt like they were trying to avoid a story that's already been told elsewhere, but they ended up with a gap that wasn't filled very well.

Six days after Alabama's Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are "children," upending in vitro fertilization treatments, a Republican state senator said he plans to introduce a bill that would protect IVF statewide.

State Sen. Tim Melson, who chairs the Senate's Health Care Committee, said the bill would clarify that embryos are not viable unless they are implanted in a uterus.

  3. Like others said, that sounds like a lot of driving for one trip.  You could think about doing a Colorado loop if you have your heart set on Rocky Mountains.  You could go from Denver to RMNP and then head through Glenwood Springs/Grand Junction to visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP (you'll only need a day there).  You could stop in Ouray or Telluride or Durango as you head down to Mesa Verde NP.  Then you could make your way back to Denver going through Pagosa Springs, Salida, etc.  There's more than enough awesome stuff along that route to fill your itinerary.

You also didn't mention, but are you going to be trying to camp and/or hike much?  Or looking at hotels everywhere?

If you end up going to Mesa Verde, I recommend staying at the lodge in the park.  There aren't many camping options and we really enjoyed the lodge when we went with the kids a couple years ago.  Also be aware that getting into the cliff dwellings requires a guided tour and all the tours book up as soon as tickets get released (on like a rolling 6 month window or something like that).  When we were booking, my wife and I had multiple browsers open trying to hit the site and were lucky to get tickets.  Things sold out in minutes.  Setup an account and login ahead of time and then practice the checkout process so you're ready.  :)

What is the most reputable used car dealer? I’ve had good experiences buying from CarMax, but they’re routinely serval thousand dollars higher than their competitors for very similar vehicles.

This is going to have the same price premium concern as CarMax, but I was very impressed by Carvana when I was browsing through their inventory and process.  I didn't end up buying from them, but the shopping experience was fast, easy and transparent.  I had a lot of confidence that I would have gotten a solid vehicle from them, if I was willing to pay for the premium service.

There's at least 2 thing to consider when you're talking about a reputable dealer.

The first is whether they're going to sell you a vehicle without being honest about any problems with it.  There are a couple things I've done to mitigate this.  One is shopping for certified used vehicles.  Certified used really is a warranty that gets attached to the vehicle and at negotiation time you can get them to remove the certified label and warranty.  I've done this twice and it knocks maybe $1500 off the vehicle (going from memory).  Certified isn't a guarantee, but it gives me some confidence that the dealer has checked for obvious problems, accidents, damage, etc.  The other thing I'd advise is getting your own mechanic to look at the vehicle.  There are mobile mechanics that will come out to a dealership and do an inspection for a couple hundred bucks.

The second thing to consider regarding a reputable dealer is whether they're going to hit you with BS fees and surprises on the deal.  Unless you're buying from a CarMax or Carvana, you're almost certainly going to run into this.  I don't think I've ever come across a dealer that doesn't try to tack stuff on.  You just have to be prepared, watch out for it, know what's fair and be ready to walk away.  I like to make it easier on myself by shopping for really common vehicles so I can be honest with the dealer and tell them, "I've already found a dozen of these Honda Odysseys online that I'd be happy with.  If you don't want to make this easy, I'm happy to go to the next one on my list."

In 2010, the UC Davis Olive Center, an organization created to promote the sale of California olive oil, published a report funded by California olive oil producers and companies. The purpose of the report was to make news that would discredit their competition – imported olive oils. The now-infamous report claimed "69 percent of imported olive oil samples and 10 percent of California olive oil samples labeled as extra virgin olive oil failed to meet the IOC/USDA sensory standards for extra virgin olive oil." In layman's terms, this means these samples failed a taste test. Sounds pretty fishy that something as subjective as a taste test would be used to determine if an olive oil has been adulterated, doesn't it?

And, Hamas won a Palestinian election outright.  The uncomfortable fact that no one is talking about is that the Palestinians did, to a certain degree, choose this.  When you elect a militant group whose entire r'aison d'etre is to destroy Israel, you get war with Israel.  The only surprising thing is that it took this long to get here.

Hey, I agree with most of what you're saying but I think a lot of people are using the Palestinian election to unfairly assign "blame" or accountability.  The last election was in 2006, 17 years ago, and Hamas hasn't allowed another one since.  Literally half of the Palestinian population is under 18 and wasn't alive during the last election.  And, Hamas orchestrated a drastically different persona during that period.  The John Oliver video posted above does a good job of looking at this.

Weight and temperature control are the big issues for what we do. Meds must be on ice. Most of the time packages weigh 20 plus pounds with supplies, and  additional hydration that is required to administer the drug.

But for oral meds, yes drone delivery should be the norm for rural areas.

You should check out https://www.worldcourier.com/ I used to do some work for them years ago and I was always super impressed with their people and the service they provided.  They were acquired by AmerisourceBergen over a decade ago, but they still operate a bit like a small, specialty company.  They are expensive, but they are absolutely the experts when it comes to shipping drugs or anything temperature sensitive around the world.

Motherfucker. They said they would be ok with punting the flooring altogether so we would have to take that on and they would give us credit.

I did some math and the entire area that was in scope was about 725 square feet. The credit? Of course it was quoted originally "at cost" so it would be $6500.

So I can punt on 720 sq ft of flooring at a savings of $6500, I can pay them $6k to do the extra 215 sq ft or I can try to buy the additional product and have someone do it after the fact and risk it looking like dog shit. This is so fun, I'm glad I'm doing this. Really making my life swell.

Sounds shitty.  Do you have any kind of itemized quote that shows how they were pricing the flooring?  What does your payment schedule look like?  If neither of those indicate how the flooring was priced, I'd try telling the contractor they need to set a per sq ft price that applies to puts and take and then you'll make the call on what's in or out.  If they don't agree to that, are you willing to cancel the project?  Have you gotten any independent quotes to do the whole floor?

I was under the impression you can't get companion pass from transferring points to SW from Sapphire. Is that not correct?

Glad to hear the trip went fine. Not looking forward to that much time in a plane but seeing Hawaii would be worth it.

Right, you can't get the points by transferring. You have to earn them separately. The easiest way is to get Southwest branded cards that give a bonus for initial spending. If you get a personal card and a business card and then hit the minimum spend at the beginning of the year you can earn enough pretty fast.  But if you already have points it may not be worth the hassle.

I haven't boarded a plane in 8 years after well over a decade of flying 15+ times a year. Haven't missed it one bit. Well, now the wife wants to go to Hawaii next spring and I noticed SW goes to Hawaii from DFW. I have a couple hundred thousand Chase Sapphire points I can transfer to SW points so looking at going that route. Anyone have any experience with flying SW to Hawaii? Thinking Oahu since it'll be both of our first time going to Hawaii.

Yeah, we did this in June 2022 with 2 kids.  Flew DAL->LAX->KOA on the way there.  Flight left DAL at 7 AM, had a 90 minute stop in LA and got to Kona around 1:30.  Coming back we flew out of Maui at 7:30, had a 2 hour stop in PHX and then got to Dallas at 10:45 PM.  It was like any other Southwest flight, nothing special but no problems.  From what I recall, there were few, if any, direct routes from DAL.  Oahu might have more options than Kona or Maui.

I was using 2 companion passes for the kids.  If you want to go for a companion pass, you could book flights with points now and then SWA will refund the points if/when you get the companion pass next year (assuming you get it before your trip).

    WTF are you confused about?

This is the kind of site I'm talking about:

    https://www.freelancer.com/

Your post wasn't clear at all.  What is your girlfriend's role?  Is she a software developer who was assigned a project to build an engineering tool and now she's trying to freelance it to someone else? Is she a procurement person who's trying to source a implementation vendor?  Give some more details.

I had the same thought. I just assume that 20 Republicans are like "We're good with whoever, lets get this shit over with" and then on the floor they switch to whichever candidate.

Yeah, you're probably right, but that sounds tricky to pull off.  The other option I see is for McHenry to call for the election of a different speaker pro tempore and then let that person preside over the actual vote for the speaker.  That way he McHenry can claim he wasn't part of the compromise.

I don't think the GOP is going to call for a vote until they have 217 Yes votes in their side meetings.

Even if the Dems could come up with a compromise to support a moderate Republican, how do they get McHenry to take a vote?  Is there anything stopping him from just keeping the House in recess until he gets the answer he wants?  Would they have to sue him to test McHenry's "necessary and appropriate" authority?

  14. Trying to trace the wire in the attic is probably the way to go. Also, it's doubtful this is the case for an outlet in that position but it's possible someone wired it up to a switch. We had a couple of those in our house that took a little while to figure out.

  17. We watched the new Haunted Mansion with Rosario Dawson and Owen Wilson at the kids' request last night. I had extremely low expectations but it was a solid family movie.  The Eddie Murphy version from 20 years ago was complete garbage, but this new one was fun.  Not a bad choice if you're trying to find something new for the kids on movie night.

Be careful with the lower rates or rebates associated with smart thermostats.  Some require you to allow the provider to access the thermostat and they can regulate your settings without your knowledge.

Oh for sure, I should have mentioned that.  The Octopus deal is that they can adjust your thermostat in some situations.  I don't have the right kind of thermostat, so I've never looked into the specifics of it.  But anyone should definitely read up before pulling the trigger.

The EV thing seems less invasive to me,.  I think they let you request how much you need to charge by a certain time and then they'll balance the electricity to give you a lower rate.

  19. I'm about 18 months into a 24 month contract with Octopus Energy and have been happy with them.  They have special plans if you have an EV or certain smart thermostats that seem to be some of the cheapest 12 month plans.  I'm not able to take advantage of those (no EV yet, and wrong brand of thermostat), so I'll probably have to switch when this contract is up.  But, if you already have an EV or a compatible thermostat, it could be a good deal for a shorter term contract.  They're also 100% renewable.
