Threw down on some red beans and rice this weekend myself, but with the kidney variety. Maybe your stock was bad?
It was store bought. So, doubtful but maybe? Which is the same thing on said about the green onions.

What else was in the beans? Any meat?
Sliced sausage and a smoked turkey leg. Besides meat...onion, celery, bell pepper, garlic, chicken stock, seasonings.
Also fresh green onions on top, which I'm now suspicious of.

Hopefully there's a food safety expert in here that can help me.
On Sunday I cooked a big pot of red beans and rice to have for dinner during the week. These were dry "small red beans" from Kroger. Didn't eat any of it that day. Tuesday we heated some of it up for dinner. Within a couple hours I had pretty bad stomach cramps and shortly after that spent some time hanging out on the toilet. My wife woke up that night stomach problems. Neither of my kids had a problem.
My wife suspects the beans. She pointed out that kidney beans have a natural toxin and need to be cooked properly to remove it and she's convinced this was the problem. I'm not sold that it could be this toxin.
A) I was cooking red beans, not kidney beans. As far as I could tell online, they are different and only kidneys have the toxin.
B) I cooked the beans for 20 minutes on high in our Instant Pot, then they simmered for ~2 hours on the stove. Any toxin should have been long gone.
C) I cooked the same thing a few weeks ago and didn't have any problem.
So, what do you think? Are red bean toxins a likely cause of my problems? Or is it more likely something else?
I'm going to eat another right now to continue testing, will report back.

So, some posts on social media denigrating Walz’ military service really upset me, badly. I’m the son of a disabled vet who passed many years ago
So, instead of blasting all the Trumpers publicly, I personally messaged each one with thoughts about why denigrating military service is unacceptable. I don’t know if it will do any good but it did wonders for my mental health.
Ditto. There's a new one making the rounds on Facebook today. It really would be nice to see the Dems trot out a series of veterans at the convention to speak in support of Walls.

That's a really, really fucked up case but I don't know how anyone can blame the guy who was the AG at the time. The Medical Examiner concluded it was a suicide. <Somehow she managed to stab herself 20 times. Sure thing.> That's what sunk the case - the incompetence or, more likely, deceit of the ME. I believe Shapiro wasn't even an elected official at the time of the murder.
Just a note here...things connect to Shapiro because he was AG a few years ago when his office reviewed the case and decided to keep it classified as suicide and not re-open it. Not saying that decision was right or wrong.

Wait, seriously?
I knew there was a "Trump Bible" that included the Constitution, but they actually fucking edited out the civil rights parts???
I had to look this up. Seems like it has the original Constitution and then the first 10 amendments (Bill of Rights) but doesn't include any of the other amendments. Probably less to do with cherry picking and more to do with anyone buying this being too ignorant to know there are more amendments.

Crazy that they allow insider trading for politicians. Are there funds out there that just follow Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, etc. and just do the same trades? Are their trades known in real time? Do they out perform the market?
There are actually: https://www.fool.com/investing/2024/07/02/members-of-congress-buy-and-sell-stocks-these-etfs/
The NANC fund (for Pelosi) tracks Democrats and the CRUZ fund tracks Republicans.

How? Why would people who vote for Trump ever vote democrat down ballot? Not that it makes sense to me, but I could imagine someone thinking, "I hate taxes, so I'm voting Trump. But I want a split legislature to check his worst tendencies."

It's Crosby's first-person experience of D-Day, not the definitive retelling. He couldn't tell when it happened either, and despite being at the center of the planning was completely separated from the execution of the operation itself.
This show at its core is a retelling on his book and the show is even narrated by Cros, so it makes sense to me narratively
Maybe, but they further confused it by showing the perspective from the POW camp and intertwining the Tuskegee story line. When the POWs are trying to decipher the German freak-out, you can't tell if it's misinformation, pre-invasion or post-invasion. Plus, they did show Rosenthal's perspective, but did it retroactively and didn't actually show anything he did on D-Day. Just weird all the way around. It felt like they were trying to avoid a story that's already been told elsewhere, but they ended up with a gap that wasn't filled very well.

The whole presentation of D-Day was awkward. Because they kept jumping around I literally couldn't tell when it actually happened. And they alluded to the pilots playing a big role in the invasion, but then move off it shows on screen. Just really odd.

QuoteSix days after Alabama's Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are "children," upending in vitro fertilization treatments, a Republican state senator said he plans to introduce a bill that would protect IVF statewide.
State Sen. Tim Melson, who chairs the Senate's Health Care Committee, said the bill would clarify that embryos are not viable unless they are implanted in a uterus.

Like others said, that sounds like a lot of driving for one trip. You could think about doing a Colorado loop if you have your heart set on Rocky Mountains. You could go from Denver to RMNP and then head through Glenwood Springs/Grand Junction to visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP (you'll only need a day there). You could stop in Ouray or Telluride or Durango as you head down to Mesa Verde NP. Then you could make your way back to Denver going through Pagosa Springs, Salida, etc. There's more than enough awesome stuff along that route to fill your itinerary.
You also didn't mention, but are you going to be trying to camp and/or hike much? Or looking at hotels everywhere?
If you end up going to Mesa Verde, I recommend staying at the lodge in the park. There aren't many camping options and we really enjoyed the lodge when we went with the kids a couple years ago. Also be aware that getting into the cliff dwellings requires a guided tour and all the tours book up as soon as tickets get released (on like a rolling 6 month window or something like that). When we were booking, my wife and I had multiple browsers open trying to hit the site and were lucky to get tickets. Things sold out in minutes. Setup an account and login ahead of time and then practice the checkout process so you're ready.

What is the most reputable used car dealer? I’ve had good experiences buying from CarMax, but they’re routinely serval thousand dollars higher than their competitors for very similar vehicles.
This is going to have the same price premium concern as CarMax, but I was very impressed by Carvana when I was browsing through their inventory and process. I didn't end up buying from them, but the shopping experience was fast, easy and transparent. I had a lot of confidence that I would have gotten a solid vehicle from them, if I was willing to pay for the premium service.
There's at least 2 thing to consider when you're talking about a reputable dealer.
The first is whether they're going to sell you a vehicle without being honest about any problems with it. There are a couple things I've done to mitigate this. One is shopping for certified used vehicles. Certified used really is a warranty that gets attached to the vehicle and at negotiation time you can get them to remove the certified label and warranty. I've done this twice and it knocks maybe $1500 off the vehicle (going from memory). Certified isn't a guarantee, but it gives me some confidence that the dealer has checked for obvious problems, accidents, damage, etc. The other thing I'd advise is getting your own mechanic to look at the vehicle. There are mobile mechanics that will come out to a dealership and do an inspection for a couple hundred bucks.
The second thing to consider regarding a reputable dealer is whether they're going to hit you with BS fees and surprises on the deal. Unless you're buying from a CarMax or Carvana, you're almost certainly going to run into this. I don't think I've ever come across a dealer that doesn't try to tack stuff on. You just have to be prepared, watch out for it, know what's fair and be ready to walk away. I like to make it easier on myself by shopping for really common vehicles so I can be honest with the dealer and tell them, "I've already found a dozen of these Honda Odysseys online that I'd be happy with. If you don't want to make this easy, I'm happy to go to the next one on my list."

Tree law is pretty serious bidness on Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/treelaw/
From what I've gathered over the years, in most places he owes you triple the replacement cost of the trees as well as the value of the lumber. But I'm not a lawyer.

Something like 70% of the olive oil o. The market is fake.
2 hours ago, Mittens said:Apparently that stat is BS: https://www.aboutoliveoil.org/olive-oil-fraud
QuoteIn 2010, the UC Davis Olive Center, an organization created to promote the sale of California olive oil, published a report funded by California olive oil producers and companies. The purpose of the report was to make news that would discredit their competition – imported olive oils. The now-infamous report claimed "69 percent of imported olive oil samples and 10 percent of California olive oil samples labeled as extra virgin olive oil failed to meet the IOC/USDA sensory standards for extra virgin olive oil." In layman's terms, this means these samples failed a taste test. Sounds pretty fishy that something as subjective as a taste test would be used to determine if an olive oil has been adulterated, doesn't it?

3 hours ago, TexArcher said:And, Hamas won a Palestinian election outright. The uncomfortable fact that no one is talking about is that the Palestinians did, to a certain degree, choose this. When you elect a militant group whose entire r'aison d'etre is to destroy Israel, you get war with Israel. The only surprising thing is that it took this long to get here.
Hey, I agree with most of what you're saying but I think a lot of people are using the Palestinian election to unfairly assign "blame" or accountability. The last election was in 2006, 17 years ago, and Hamas hasn't allowed another one since. Literally half of the Palestinian population is under 18 and wasn't alive during the last election. And, Hamas orchestrated a drastically different persona during that period. The John Oliver video posted above does a good job of looking at this.

Weight and temperature control are the big issues for what we do. Meds must be on ice. Most of the time packages weigh 20 plus pounds with supplies, and additional hydration that is required to administer the drug.
But for oral meds, yes drone delivery should be the norm for rural areas.
You should check out https://www.worldcourier.com/ I used to do some work for them years ago and I was always super impressed with their people and the service they provided. They were acquired by AmerisourceBergen over a decade ago, but they still operate a bit like a small, specialty company. They are expensive, but they are absolutely the experts when it comes to shipping drugs or anything temperature sensitive around the world.

Motherfucker. They said they would be ok with punting the flooring altogether so we would have to take that on and they would give us credit.
I did some math and the entire area that was in scope was about 725 square feet. The credit? Of course it was quoted originally "at cost" so it would be $6500.
So I can punt on 720 sq ft of flooring at a savings of $6500, I can pay them $6k to do the extra 215 sq ft or I can try to buy the additional product and have someone do it after the fact and risk it looking like dog shit. This is so fun, I'm glad I'm doing this. Really making my life swell.
Sounds shitty. Do you have any kind of itemized quote that shows how they were pricing the flooring? What does your payment schedule look like? If neither of those indicate how the flooring was priced, I'd try telling the contractor they need to set a per sq ft price that applies to puts and take and then you'll make the call on what's in or out. If they don't agree to that, are you willing to cancel the project? Have you gotten any independent quotes to do the whole floor?
