@Helobious Two other Biden accomplishments that I didn't see mentioned but should register with you and everyday Americans are 1) the PACT act protecting veterans impacted by burn pits and 2) the part of the Inflation Reduction Act that capped insulin and out-of-pocket prescription codes for seniors on Medicare. Both will help a lot of people and are easy to understand.

Really CHIPS was the only thing I had no idea about. Seems like a good thing but it’s a niche accomplishment. I don’t know that most people are going to care about increased computer chip production
Really, it's not a niche accomplishment and you should be pumped to give Biden credit for it. Everything in our lives revolves around semiconductors. Remember how dealerships didn't have any cars to sell during the pandemic? That's because they couldn't get chips. 75%+ of chip manufacturing is in Asia now. That's a threat to our security as much as if we relied on Asia for 75% of our food or oil. The CHIPS act brings manufacturing back to the US, protects our supply chain and makes us less dependent on foreign countries. When you run into those people who don't care about, feel confident about educating them on what a big deal it is.

Didn’t bill Barr and trumps DoJ investigate Hillary, looking for anything to charge her for ?
It was actually Trump's State Department and the GOP-led Senate Judiciary Committee that investigated. They found "no persuasive evidence of systemic, deliberate mishandling of classified information."

Do you realize that you could pick out the problems from every year or decade? The premise was that today America is in better shape than it's ever been and I don't think that is accurate. From a sociological (we all hate each other, mostly), political (again, we all hate each other and our democracy is in bad shape), or psychological (we kill each other and have kids dying in schools literally every other day with mental health issues that are more out of control than typhoid or polio ever posed).
But there is some privilege in my thinking the '20 and '50s were great-- if you are a BIPOC or LGBQ you probably don't want to be anywhere before 1988 (as Louis C.K. said).
The 2010-2020 decade (pre-Covid) is better in almost every respect than today, for my money. Covid broke us.
It really was a blessing that everyone was completely unified and nobody hated anyone else in the '50s: McCarthyism says hi

@Mullet Free, are you absolutely certain it was actually the coach posting? I can easily imagine 12 year old boys impersonating a teacher to troll classmates. Just throwing that out there.

I had the same reaction. It seems like companies have been hoarding tech talent for the past ~18 months and now things are rebalancing. It's not just these tech giants, but large banks and automotive firms have been stocking up on people, probably other industries I'm not exposed to as well. Hopefully things are calming down and the talent pool will stabilize.

Does anyone have good solutions for monitoring kids' texts on an Android phone?
My wife has not been happy with the Gabb phone my 12 year old daughter has. She (wife) is pushing for a Pinwheel because it has text monitoring built in, but I don't really want to shell out for a kid-specific device that is locked into it's own OS and set of apps. (Partly because we're only halfway through the 24 month contract on the Gabb phone that my wife didn't realize was a 24 month contract, but that's another story...)
I'm trying to setup my old Pixel 5 for her and I like most of what you can do with Google Family Link. Part of why I like it is we can still give access to any apps we want, like Netflix and such, without worrying about social media apps. Having that flexibility is nice for traveling and things like that. I've got it locked down where she can't install apps or even visit sites without permission. The time limits and locking are great for what we need to do. But there's no text monitoring and my wife is really set on this for some reason.
I've been playing with Qustodio also, but it has limitations. It captures SMS messages, but won't log MMS or any message when Google Chat Features are enabled. I'm not sure if there's a good way around that without going to something like Pinwheel. I'm leaning towards dumping the data plan, limiting her to SMS and sticking with Family Link and (maybe) Qustodio for now. That would work for me, but the wife is really hung up on having a real-time feed of all texts (even if the kid deletes some).
Any suggestions?
PS - @Jerry Callo @Damor thanks for sharing the contracts above, those seem like a good idea.

I made up a batch the first week of November that's been aging in an old milk jug. Plan was to crack it open tomorrow when I'm smoking two briskets for the family. My wife had a cleaning crew come in today to deep clean the house before guests arrive. The cleaners threw out the nog because it had a November expiration date on it. Words cannot express the depths of my sorrow.
I need to make a visit to the wives thread...

I was confused on the last episode. Who was the Indian kid? Feel free to spoiler the answer.SpoilerHe was the son of the chief the soldiers killed at the very beginning of the first episode. After the chief was killed, Scout saved the kid and his mother from the soldiers. The kid and his mom apparently got split up at some point and both ended up in bad situations.

Jesus didn't, but Paul did in Romans 1:18-32:
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,
19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
Most of the members of a congregation that leave probably leave over verse 32. Having a gay wedding in their Church is seen as approval, even celebrated. It is, indeed, scriptural.

Honest question...why do we care what Paul said? Why does he get the final vote? Paul was obviously very influential and changed a lot of hearts and minds, but who decided we have to accept his opinion on all things? In my best estimation, Paul was a man moved by God to be better and to encourage others to be better. He's doing the best he can to share this message, but at the end of the day he's a fallible person and he probably didn't get everything 100% correct.

We are staying at Basecamp Terlingua in a bubble in October for 4 days. This thread has a lot of info, almost too much to sort out. What are the main hikes to see the best of the area?
We are not camping, we are not "hikers" really but we've done a few, like Zion. Not trying to get hurt or die of thirst or exposure before I play 18 at Lajitas.
What are 3 or 4 trails the average 50 year old can handle to see the best of the area?
Thanks in advance.
The other suggestions are good, but Lost Mine is partially closed right now and Santa Elena is also closed. So backup plans are good. We did Upper Burro Mesa Pour-off a couple years ago with my 6 year old and I thought it was a great hike. You don't have the elevation gain like you do on the mountain trails. After the first 1/4 mile or so, you drop down into a canyon for most of the hike which provides a lot of shelter from the sun/heat.

I like to go the other direction, coming down the laguna meadows side. The Pinnacles trail is steep. Personally, I'd rather go up the steep than down.
I hear you, I'd prefer a gentler downhill route too. But for some reason, kids seem to be the opposite. They don't like to climb, but they have those young knees that just bounce down the steep stuff.

Also, @Your Mom or others, what was the weather like when you camped the South Rim and when did you go? Any sense of how cold it gets up there in the fall?
-
2 hours ago, Your Mom said:
South Rim is pretty amazing and don't let anyone tell you that it's too much for kids that age. If your kids are troopers and athletic they can handle it. But if it were me I'd do that over two days and not all in one. All in one day is a major hike for even the most serious adult hikers. Someone else can give the specifics but it's got to be close to 20 miles round trip with a LOT of elevation gain for the whole round trip. My kids did it over two days and we camped at the top. I think there's only one spring to resupply water on the hike and it can be dry sometimes. There is no way around carrying a lot of weight if you need 2 days of water for 4 people.
Yeah, the tough reality is that I'd end up carrying most of that water and gear for 4 people. Plus, there was a fire at the South Rim last year so there are no toilets at the South Rim or East Rim campsites and you have to pack out your poop. Not a huge selling point for my wife. South Rim (without Emory Peak or the East Rim) is 12.5 miles. I guess that assumes I drive up to the Visitor Center and don't hike straight from the campground. The plan would be to hike up Laguna Meadows and then come down the Boot Canyon/Pinnacles side. Depending on how we're feeling, we could shorten things by cutting across Colima Trail, which would make it 8 miles total. We've done 5 & 6 mile hikes with the kids, so I'm sure they could handle 8 (at least).

Back in the spring I realized my kids (8 and 11) have a 4-day weekend in October thanks to the screwy school schedule, so I grabbed the last site in the Basin campground for that weekend. So, we'll be heading down in a few weeks. Unfortunately...this will be over OU weekend.
This is going to be our second trip down there. We went in Oct/Nov 2020 when a lot of things were shut down. We stayed in Terlingua that trip, so this will be our first time camping in the park. On that trip we did the Fossil Exhibit, Boquillas Canyon, Upper Burro Mesa Pouroff, Santa Elena Canyon, Lost Mine, Close Canyon and Balanced Rock. I posted about that trip on this thread a few pages back:
Apparently things have been crazy in the park this summer. Chisos Basin Campground has been closed for a month because it got overrun by aggressive black bears eating mesquite berries. I think they officially opened back up today, so hopefully we'll be good to go. There was also a ton of rain in August, so Santa Elena is closed as well as part of Lost Mine.
We're going to drive out there (from Dallas) early Friday and setup camp. Not sure if we'll have time to do much once we get there. Maybe we could try the Window trail for sunset, but I'm not sure we'll be settled in time for that. I'd like to try and do South Rim on Sunday if I can talk my wife into it. We were going to try the Boquillas crossing because it was closed in 2020, but I forgot the kids' passports expired last year and I don't think we'll get them replaced in time.
Given everything we've already seen, any suggestions for hikes and sites with the kids? We'll have 2 full days on Saturday and Sunday. Since we'll be in the park, is there any place to explore after dark? Also, since we'll be there during the OU game, are there any good spots to catch the game around Terlingua or Lajitas? Or for that matter, reliable radio stations in the park? Listening to the game on the radio while hiking through the desert sounds like a good way to spend a day.

It wasn’t that stupid of a question. I really just limit myself to NYT, BBC, etc. They’ve been fairly quiet on counteroffensive coverage so far given the difficulty to verify anything, but early reports (like this incredible reporting from WaPo) indicate costly but measured progress, not a mass routing back to Moscow. And the two months before the offensive were certainly described as a stalemate. I don’t think people casually following this are picking up on the potential developments from Twitter.
It's probably too early to tell, but the assessment in that story seems...slanted. The units having success and capturing Russians aren't the ones that are going to get interviewed by WaPo in the hospital. War is hell, but it's more hellacious for Russia right now.

I can name a couple of many anomolies in the election that make no sense to me.
1st how did Biden get to 81 million votes without taking any from Trump? Trump actually got more votes too than his first election. That never happened in history...
2nd How did Trump win all but one of the 19 Belweather counties and both of the Belweather states and still lose?
Can you clear those up for me?
Ask and ye shall receive: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/where-did-all-the-bellwether-counties-go/
Now the question back to you is, what do you make of that? Do you read that article and conclude it is a well researched analysis of an evolving electorate that helps us understand this particular "anomaly", or is it more likely that we just haven't uncovered the fraud yet?

Trump CRUSHED Biden in Kansas -- 56/42. Tonight's result gives ammunition to the idea that it's not a partisan issue, that Roe V Wade has bipartisan support. This needs to be front and center in every race going forward.
I think you're right that it's not a partisan issue. Unfortunately, I also think it's very likely there are a lot of Texans who would vote for a constitutional amendment to allow abortion, but won't be willing to pull the lever for a Democrat.

This is a thing? I've seen dry roux "mix" on the grocery shelves, but never actual roux.
I use the Alton Brown recommended technique for making roux -- mix flour and fat in a Dutch oven, bake it uncovered in a 350 F oven until it reaches the color you're looking for, maybe whisk it a couple of times along the way. So far it's been bulletproof.
Yep. I get two pots of gumbo from a jar. Plus it's certified Cajun, so I'm covered there. I may try that Alton Brown method. Do you make it ahead and save it, or do you directly build your gumbo in that same dutch oven?

Don't worry about peeling them and just make your hummus. Hack approved by my lebanese mother in law. She thinks this is white people shit and was sure to inform me that they only time she saw it was with an aunt (by marriage).
I hear ya. It's definitely not necessary. But I've tried it both ways and the hummus is noticeably smoother when taking the time to peel.

Here's a good hack story I remembered.
Years ago my wife and I decided to go down to San Antonio to spend Christmas with her Mexican grandma. She was a Scrooge and didn't want to do anything for the holidays. So we were going to make her dinner
We found the most authentic mole recipe we could and did it with turkey. We had about 50 ingredients and did everything from scratch. Soaked and pureed chiles, toasted pumpkin seeds, etc. I can't even remember all the nit picky ingredients we had to handle. It tasted damn good.
Anyway, Grandma comes through the kitchen and stops to taste after we'd been cooking for hours. She lets us know how horrible it tastes. "Why didn't you just use the sauce from the jar? That's what I do. Let me show you." She then proceeds to pull Hershey's syrup and JIF out of the pantry and "fix" our mole the way she makes hers.

Anyone but Trump but then anyone but Biden

It is their talking point, but it's also a little true. At the White House Pride event, a trans woman with breast implants took off her top/bra and was dancing topless. She was arrested, removed and banned. Before this incident occurred she took a photo with Biden.
