The El Fenix inside Ridgmar lasted until about 2000. It got turned into an indoor miniature golf place. Called it "Moon Golf" because the balls were neon and the lights were dimmed. Weird concept. I only go there now for the movies.

Now it's an indoor remote control car track.  I don't even think they sell anything there, just a place for some nerds to come race their cars and hang out.

I haven't been inside Ridgmar in fucking ages, can't even imagine what it looks like now.

I grew up going there all the time.  I will occasionally take my daughter to a movie there and walk through and go to the aquarium there as an easy way to kill a couple of hours in the A/C.  It's beyond depressing.  Probably 80% of the stores are vacant, and the ones that are open are weird.  I think there is one restaurant in the food court that is open.  One of the anchor spots is a self storage place now.  The Dillards turned into a Last Call Dillards or whatever they call it and they take up maybe 30% of one floor of the space.  Neiman Marcus and Sears are closed.  I have no idea how they keep the doors open.

  3. Dollar movie theater thread reminded me, any of you kids ever go to that shithole in the Toys R Us parking lot? Fear’s boy Whipple & I accidentally sent several bottles of beer rolling down those floors over the years.
Think there was one somewhere around Trail Lake too.

I probably saw 20+ movies there as a kid. My big outing as a kid was my parents taking me to Chuck E Cheese across the street for lunch and games. Then a dollar movie, then Toys R Us, then El Fenix in Ridgmar Mall. Now none of those places exist.

  4. In the 7-25 DZ Episode they mentioned something about learning a lot about business, and how business days work. Then went on to say something about 12 Tuesdays. I’m blindly assuming it’s supposed to be a 90 day blackout(no racist) from end of contract or last day on air. (I’m not doing the math)

They were talking about learning it takes 8-12 business days to get an LLC. They were joking about not knowing what a business day was and were saying that Tuesday is the only business day because they do the “Business Tuesday” segment. It didn’t have anything to do with their non-compete.
  5. Bali Hai is great if you aren’t a real serious golfer (I’m not). The convenience can’t be beat, but it’s a party course. I’ve played a couple of rounds there that got pretty backed up and slow, but a cart girl comes buy often and it’s a decent enough course with some fun holes.

  6. ST. JOHN’S, CANADA—After collecting debris from the ocean floor and examining it at a nearby pier, the U.S. Coast Guard reported Thursday it had found horse remains within the wreckage of the Titan submersible. “In our excavation of this catastrophic implosion, we have recovered both human and equine tissues, including the crushed carcass of a thoroughbred stallion that appears to have traveled aboard the Titan vessel,” said Coast Guard Capt. Stan Partridge, whose remarks led to feverish online speculation about whether a 1,200-pound horse could have contributed to what went wrong with the sub during its doomed descent. “It wasn’t just a single horse either, but several, perhaps an entire herd. It’s unclear whether the horses were passengers, some kind of entertainment, or a team of draft horses used to pull the submersible during its 2.5-mile journey to the bottom of the sea.” At press time, sources reported that the remains could simply be horsehide that was used in the construction of the Titan as a cheaper alternative to titanium.

Lately they've been pretty on the ball.

  7. I was in The Bahamas last week and stayed at Baha Mar. The casino there is high quality for a non-Vegas locale, IMO. What struck me while playing there was that it wasn’t quite like the Vegas experience, not that I really expected it or wanted it to be. Nonetheless, I was trying to figure out what made me think that and it hit me - less of the corporate bullshit and mechanizing of every single thing. BJ still paid 3/2 for getting blackjack. They shuffled cards. Someone claimed a missed payout on craps and they’d get paid after the next roll without argument (happened a couple of times, once to me).
I’m sure it will change down there as well, and I still love going to Vegas, but it was nice.

I had the exact same experience at Baha Mar in March. It was refreshing not having to search for the hidden 3/2 BJ tables since they were all 3/2.
  8. Anyone going for F1 race? I’m not a whale by any means but I usually get my room and another comped at Cosmo when I go. I emailed my host and she said someone on my same level paid $8k/night for 3 nights for their most basic room with a view of strip. I can get a non strip view comped and I assume for that price I can get into a club area on the strip with a better view.

  9. Heading with a buddy for a quick 24 hour trip to for Stars/Knights game 2 on Sunday.  We're flying out late Saturday afternoon and back Sun night.   I go to Vegas relatively frequently but buddy hasn't been in a while.  I'm trying to think of a place with a good Vegas vibe/scene for Sat night dinner (think STK but not STK as maybe not steak restaurant since we have plenty of those in Dallas). Any thoughts?  I booked Sushi Roku as a placeholder as I had a good meal there probably 8+ years ago, but that was 8+ years ago so not sure how it is now.
Also, have not been to the arena.  Any advice?  It's a Noon local time start so have a 10:15AM at Beer Park since that is relatively close by but open to suggestions.   Also, for anyone that has been to arena, advice welcome on seating locations to avoid, etc. (based on pics online seems like a really well designed arena where no seats are really shitty).  Where we end up probably largely depends on how much tickets fluctuate.  Hoping shitty local game time results in a softer ticket market than it otherwise would be.

For a restaurant recommendation I always suggest Beauty and Essex at Cosmo.

Also, if you are going to the arena from Beer Park, you could always walk across the strip to Cosmo, up the the second floor and over to Crystal Shops, and hop on the tram to Park MGM then cross the street to the arena.

That’s how I go every time, and I always stay at Cosmo. It is a decent amount of walking, but you are indoors in the AC for most of it. And for me, it adds to the excitement and anticipation to travel over there in a herd of fans.
