  1. My 15 year son wants to find a part-time job over the summer.  He did the city's teen summer job program last year but wants to do something different.

We know about lifeguarding with the city.  He was hoping for something in food service or movie theaters.  Most everything wants 16 year olds at a minimum.

Anyone have any leads in Austin?

  2. COTA is still bumpy.

It’s worth noting that Circuit of The Americas is known as a fairly bumpy circuit — a topic of conversation that comes up not just in F1 but also in MotoGP. The top three finishers of the U.S. Grand Prix were asked about the track’s nature during the post-race press conference, and they all agreed that something needs to be done to fix the track.

Max Verstappen felt “it needs to be redone because at the moment, it feels like it’s better suited to a rally car.” He later added that he does “love” COTA; however, a new tarmac is needed. Lewis Hamilton agreed with the Dutchman but said, “I like some of the bumps because (it) adds character to a circuit, but there’s way too many.”

I'm sitting here with two Aggies who are saying the Aggies are going to go after Lanning.  I'm thinking that if Lanning does extremely well this year there's no way Phil Knight lets him go and I'd love to see the Aggies get into a bidding war with Phil Knight, whose net worth is ... 28.5 billion dollars.

Lanning signed a 6 year, $45 million extension before the season.

The speculation that what changed Oregon and Washington’s minds was the promise that they will get a full share in the next tv deal makes a lot of sense to me. Joining the Big Ten makes sense if they get a full share eventually, probably no matter how long it takes.

From what I've read, Oregon and Washington will initially get in the mid-30 million dollars each year.  They will get an additional $1 million each year for the remainder of the current contract.  They will get full shares with the next TV contract.

  5. I thought the food/water situation was much improved from last year.  Plenty of water in the water stations.  Had no wait at the BBQ area in the infield on Friday.  Bought a taco from Kasey Studdard at his stand.

On Saturday there were lines at a lot of the concession stands but got food super quick at the new grab and go tent on the soccer field.

I parked in Lot F.  I was home within an hour on Friday and Saturday and I stayed to the end of P2 and Quali.  On Sunday, we hung out for an hour after the race.  Started my car in Lot F at 5:20, turned off Kellam onto 71 about 6:20 and was home in South Austin by 6:45.

  6. Drivers are complaining about the track being bumpy with a lack of grip outside the racing line.  Maybe they used the same people as COTA.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton joked “you think that people in this day and age should be able to make a flat road relatively easy” in reference to the “big, big, big bumps in so many places” on the track.

“I don’t know if they will be able to grind that at night and improve it,” Hamilton said of the bumps.

  7. Haas' NASCAR sponsors wanted Mazepin out.

    Quote

Haas confirmed pressure from his NASCAR team sponsors in making the decision to cut ties with Mazepin, his family and the connection to Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. He also said it is a financial hit but there was no real scenario to keep Mazepin.

“There was a lot of pressure from sponsors as far as the negativity of having a Russian sponsor and driver, so hopefully, it diffuses all of that, you know, politics. We are here to race cars not get involved in the politics but unfortunately, there was a lot of pressure. A lot of our sponsors on the Cup side weren’t real happy about having a Russian anywhere. There’s just a lot of feelings, heartfelt feelings, about what is going on.”

  8. I don't see how Haas can continue to be associated with Uralkali and the Mazepins.

    Quote

Uralkali is a Russian chemical company with Dmitry Mazepin as deputy chairman of the Uralkali board and Uralchem CEO. He is the father of Haas driver Nikita Mazepin and is an associate of Vladimir Putin, attending the Kremlin for a meeting called by Putin on Thursday.

Yeah I told my kid that Otmar's first comment should have been something like "I'm thrilled to be here - no longer serving evil as a minion of Lawrence Stroll".

I don't know who is the better Bond villain in F1, Lawrence Stroll or Mazepin.

  10. From COTA:

    Track Repair Project Underway

For the last few weeks, the track has undergone a large-scale resurfacing initiative. COTA worked with consultants to review asphalt designs and diagnose the parts of the track in need of resurfacing. Ground penetration radar and laser mapping equipment and software was used to map the track and identify the different repairs needed.

From there, COTA worked to repave Turns 2-10 and 12-16 and build a concrete pad to reinforce the areas at Turn 2 and 10. Additionally, COTA worked with contractors to ensure the new asphalt and concrete foundations were even and flush, creating an ideal track for upcoming races and events.
