So, I've played "friendly" Hold 'Em games over the years but it's been awhile and I'm definitely rusty. We are starting a monthly neighborhood game tonight with eight regulars. We've got a professional dealer run the game. Buy-in is $300 with a one re-buy for $100 or something along those lines. Been bumping around the Internet the last week reading a few things with regard to strategy, etc.
My understanding is that nobody is super serious -- it's just an excuse to get together once a month, knock back a few beverages and play cards with buddies. Anybody got some good online resources to help 'bone up' my skills headed into tonight's game? I actually found a pretty good little article in Golf Magazine or Golf Digest written by a guy that got into online poker during COVID. Some pretty sound ideas in that one, I thought.
Raise more, call less.-

Great story. Didn't know him well but he seemed like a good guy and straight shooter. Liked that room but just never enough tables going for me since it became Red Star.
I’m sure we’ve passed some chips back and forth.
Fat mild aged bearded white guy, typical shit reg.
Edit - quoted the wrong part, tappa noob. -
Red star just changed their 1/2 to $500 max. It ch aged while I was there today during free play from noon - 2. Game keeps making earlier, I was there right at noon and they already had one full table and we made the second table around 12:30ish.
Seems like the plan is to keep it going for now, so I’ll try to be there a few times a week at least during the day, until I finally get one of those job things. Gross. -
RIP Big E, owner of Red Star and Austin poker staple. Not sure what is going to happen with Red Star, but assume it won’t be around much longer.
Action at TCH has been great. Changing the 1/2 to a $500 max has led to some great deep stack action. -
He dumps $450k on the stream yesterday.

Heading to NOLA tomorrow for our anniversary. We got married there in 2016, but haven’t been back since. Hitting up Compère Lapin, Brennan’s (brunch), GW Fins so far. WW II museum on Monday, and I’m sure I’ll slum it up at Harrahs. Weather looks fantastic, should be good times!

Smoketown! As someone from Silsbee, I can confirm it’s pretty terrible.

And, the dream is over, at least for this year. Out in 318th for $44,700. Still a great run for sure.

At least one local crusher I know is still alive in the main, last update I saw he was around 1M chips.
LFG, Sasha!!!!! -
I went to school with Dre’lon’s dad and two twin uncles, all great folks. Wish he was coming to Austin.

Another #teamrunbad checking in. -3k in my last two sessions, quads over top boat, straight flash over nut A flush, AK out-flopped QQ on two boards, etc, etc, etc.

totally fair... there is a reason I am playing 1/2. I am not even remotely good enough to play anything higher... I try to stay in my lane and let the drunks pay me off when I have a big hand.
Just bustin your sack. If you play at Red Star regularly, I’m sure we’ve played together and I can prolly guess who some of the villains you’re talking about are.
I’d just seen ya mention the AA limp move a few times recently, so maybe throw in the occasional A 2-5 suited, etc or something into that limp/reraise range may be something to consider. -
But if your game involves playing Q 4 off to “make a move” and you regularly limp A A to “set a trap” and your entire range you do that with is 3 hands, maybe you should reconsider playing “your game”.
Lulz, jkjk, sorta. Mostly. -
To acknowledge the… other side of poker, I’d actually been on about a $4k downswing, mostly from a crazy 5/10 home game that I was really under bankrolled for.
Anyways, point being downswings happen, keep playing yo game you’ll be on the right size of variance again!
How diligent and what do y’all use to track your shit? I’ve gotten much better tracking sessions this year, maybe because I’m not able to play as many. For tax purposes this is all sample data, of course. I use Poker Income, seems to check all the boxes I need, but maybe there is some new awesome shit out there?!?! -
Always buy in for the max amount (within reason, like I don’t always auto match the stack, depends on… stuff), top off to max buy when ya get below 2/3ish of the max buy in, and bring as many bullets as ya feel comfortable losing in a single session.
The Lodge looks to be bumpin per Poker Atlas, it’s the Brad, Andrew, Doug 1/2 meetup game. 25 1/2 tables going as of now. Was just going to the current withdrawal spot (TCH), but may have to venture north, beyond the wall tonight.-

Was back at TCH last night on them 1/3 streets. Had to work for it this session. I’m terrible at hand history’s because I take pretty frequent weed breaks, but in general I was doing well at hold ‘em, getting crushed in the plo bomb pots, until the game was breaking and we played one last one for the road 4 handed for $25/each. Scooped for about $1,000 with like the 17th nut on each board.
In for $1,400, out for $2,540.-

Got my $500 match in time this week, so I’ll be there more for sure.
They’re having a celebration of life hang out tonight at 7pm at red star for Big E. I’m heading to southeast Texas though today, so won’t be able to make it, but I’m sure it’ll be an awesome time with lots of good memories about an awesome dude that meant so much to the Austin poker scene.
