  1. A lot of these killers off themselves anyway before being arrested, so I don't see increased punishment working very well as a deterrent.  Plus we still have that whole eighth amendment thing that we'd have to repeal first.

I know we aren't 'sposed to talk about these losers much, but apparently this guy was a big brony (My Little Pony fan) and posted something on social media about being with Applejack in the afterlife.

  2. Can anybody recommend a live weather radar website that doesn't suck shit? For some time now, the animated radar on KXAN's website, and other local TV channels' websites, all seem to use the same app or codec, which works terribly on my PC.  They try to play back 6-8 hours of radar history, which is pointless--I only want to see the last hour or two.  Starting 6 or 8 hours back means I have to wait forever to get to the current radar image. Trying to skip ahead using the slider bar doesn't do shit. Doesn't matter if I use Chrome or Firefox.

  3. I'm not sure if this fits as a Larry David thing, but I recall a generally embarrassing event from my youth. When I was a freshman, I was living on the 19th floor of Dobie. One morning my roommate had gone to class or something so I had the room to myself. It's a quiet morning, no one's around, I have a ragged copy of Hustler that someone left in the laundry room.  I figured I would take advantage of this privacy and release some pent-up sexual energy. So I go to work, feeling pretty secure in my privacy. After I'd been at it a little while, I hear a soft thump or squeak from the window (19th floor). Window washer, busted.

(Actually, he gave no discernible sign that he saw me, and Dobie's windows are tinted, so maybe I got away with it. Still, I was startled and embarrassed.)

  4. I'm terrible at gardening & landscape work, and don't much care for it, so I'm looking for a full-service nursery, garden center, landscaper, whatever, who can dig out some (five) dead Hawthorn shrubs and replant with something similar (probably just boxwood or yaupon holly).  The hardest part of the job would be digging out the old shrubs, which I'm sure have a well-established root system.

So far I've emailed four places in/near Austin to try to get an estimate, and no one has even replied to my emails or called me back. Probably all busy doing $20,000 jobs for rich techbros or something. Any recommendations for a nursery or landscaper who will take on a small(ish) job?

  5. Does the Governor's order against "vaccine passports" (I hate that term) just apply to government entities? So, I would hope, a private business such as a restaurant or retail store could still limit customers to "vaccinated only" if they so choose?  If a restaurant can kick you out for not wearing a tie, I think it's more than reasonable that they can refuse to serve you if you can't show a record of vaccination.  I know I'd be more likely to frequent establishments if I knew that the other customers were vaccinated.

Of course, I fully expect a world of shit to come down on businesses or companies that try to implement such a policy, plus the general difficulty of figuring out if someone's record of vaccination is authentic.

  6. I don't know much about biology or immunology, it's been 30+ years since my AP Bio days in high school. But maybe someone can explain to me, in layman's terms, why the Covid-19 vaccines (while still quite effective in most people) still allow a small percentage of immunized people to develop infection?  Is this the result of their own immune systems, even after vaccination, being deficient in some way? Or is it due to some aspect of the vaccine itself not quite being able to replicate the behavior or characteristics of the actual, live virus?

When Fry's opened up here I inevitably lost my job at a local computer store.

As did many others due the many local stores closing.

Yes, Fry's had great deals but man did they knock out the local competition.

I did buy my very first pair 1G drives from there.

I thought I'd never run out of hard drive space.

I do remember in the mid-90s you could open up the Statesman and there'd be tons of ads for local, mom-n-pop type computer businesses. (But by the later 90s the bigger stores mostly stomped them out.) What was the name of that big (at the time) PC parts store that was somewhere near Lamar & Anderson, where that chinese buffet used to be? I think it was next to NTB,

  8. The freeze really did a number on my indian hawthornes, which have otherwise held up well for almost 20 years with little care or maintenance. If they don't have a miraculous recovery, what would be some alternatives that would be a little more freeze-resistant (Zone 7ish), and meet the criteria below? Characteristics I'm looking for: Hardy in Austin climate, evergreen, low maintenance, will grow with limited sun but possibly also in full sun. (Will be planted in both shady and sunny areas.)

Seems like my neighbors have some boxwoods that came through the freeze well, and I'm also thinking maybe dwarf yaupon holly. I'm no gardener, I just need something basic that will survive my brown thumb and whatever mother nature throws at it. Thanks for any suggestions.
