This is something the Singapore Cane is reserved for.  I always thought it might have a use here and this is a case where I think the little darling might be a candidate for such punishment.

You know, I could have lived the rest of my natural life and never once thought to myself, "I wonder what Michael Fay is doing now."  Except you had to remind me that he existed.

So, if any of you are curious, apparently he's a casino manager now: https://mustsharenews.com/michael-fay-today/

And the eyebrows are not quite as robust as they once were:

He can literally travel to anywhere in Westeros, at any time, listen in to any conversation - completely undetected - and no one ever thinks to ask him if he can take a peek at what Cersei's been up to during the last few weeks?

All the nerds were playing this, all the time.

edit: it just occurred to me that Doom isn't strictly internet-related, but I remember playing Doom over the internet using Kali, and so many games, including Doom, were emerging that utilized the "shareware" model of distribution.

Latest episodes actually have "Catfish" on the phone. Holy fuck is this guy tweaked out of his fucking mind. Don't do meth kids.

I was really bored with this season until the "Catfish" episode.  If Catfish did it, he didn't do himself any favors with that interview.

    Good.

i lived Germany during my high school years. The grammar is easy enough (probably because I learned Afrikaans before), but the der, die, das always confused the hell out of me.

Should adopt the Afrikaans ‘n for all nouns.  So much easier.

My mother's German and when I expressed some trouble with der/die/das, she told me that the only way to keep it straight is to commit the article to memory along with the noun.  So if you learn a new word, learn it as "das Luftkissenfahrzeug" rather than merely "Luftkissenfahrzeug."

Same here but I'm not ashamed.    I didn't care for it the first time I saw it.   But now, I get it.

Thirding it here.  I didn't hate it the first time, but to be honest it kind of bored me.  Upon a second viewing (and third, and countless more), I now "get it," and think it's one of the funniest movies ever made.  I feel similarly about O Brother, Where Art Thou?

  7. I was born and raised in Jacksonville.  There's a lot of truth in this thread, but there's some good to go along with the bad.

It's true that Jacksonville is a very redneck town.  If there were a competition for "most white trash" city in the country, Jacksonville is easily in the top three.  And it doesn't really have the southern charm of other, similar cities to offset its more colorful inhabitants.  On top of that, the crime rate is higher than similar-sized cities.

As for the economy, yeah, CSX is a big player in town, and so is the Navy.  The port doesn't just export cars, it's also a major supply terminal for the Marines.  But there are other big industries in town.  It's also got two big paper mills (which used to stink to high heaven when I was a kid, but they managed to clean up their act somehow), and Anheuser-Busch has a huge brewery there, too.

It's not a bad place to live.  Property values are pretty low, thanks to low population density.  The cost of living is below the national average.  It doesn't suffer from constant hurricane threats like other coastal cities in Florida.  There are lots of prosperous communities situated away from the redneck elements. There are plenty of museums, musical venues and other things to do.

I think Jacksonville suffers from an image problem.  It just isn't very glamorous - there's no real tourism to speak of, unless you're a golfer.  The beaches aren't pretty at all, especially compared to other Florida beaches.  No one wants to take a vacation to Jacksonville, after all.

    Except maybe Ash Williams.

  8. Just started a re-read.  I'm into book 2 and noticed that Brienne swore she'd be the one to kill Stannis, and sure enough in the show, she did:

    Quote

"I will kill him," the tall homely girl declared. "With my lord's own sword, I will kill him. I swear it. I swear it. I swear it."

    Spoiler

The sword she used to execute Stannis was the one Jaime gave her (one of two forged from Eddard Stark's greatsword, "Ice"), and which she named "Oathkeeper."  After she killed Stannis with it, she tried to give it back to Jaime because it had served its purpose.

I assume Stannis will meet his end in a similar fashion in the forthcoming book (if it ever gets published).

Question for the lawyers here.  On tv shows, an innocent person decides to plead guilty to a crime for a reduced sentence.  The judge asks them to describe the crime and that they’re guilty.  The person hems and haws and the judge forces it out that they are only pleading guilty because they decided it wasn’t worth the risk of a longer sentence if they are found guilty.  The judge tosses out the plea and the trial commences.     Is that how it happens?   Do judges require a full confession and if so, why?   I’m asking because I would bet adnan would plead guilty but not go as far as describe how he killed the girl.

I have to admit that I’m thinking about listening to serial again to recall the story in more detail.

That varies by jurisdiction, but the reason the judge asks all those questions is to ensure that there is some factual basis for the plea - that is, the defendant is pleading guilty because he really is factually guilty of the crime.  At least nominally, he's giving some indication that he's not being coerced into admitting a crime that he didn't commit.

There is also something, however, called an "Alford plea," which is what ultimately happened with the West Memphis Three.  An "Alford plea" is where the defendant maintains his innocence but pleads guilty because he is acknowledges that there is sufficient evidence to convict him.

There are a handful of states that don't recognize Alford pleas; I'm not sure if Maryland is one of them.  The trial judge usually has the discretion to accept or reject such a plea in any event because it does set up the possibility that the defendant is being railroaded into taking a deal.

I’m listening to Atlanta Monster, onto about the fifth episode and so far I’m beginning to suspect that the guy is definitely guilty and am getting distracted by people saying they’re sure it wasn’t him, but not being able to follow up with actual contradictory evidence or facts. Will keep going I guess, maybe something else comes in?

There's some alternative theories floated, but I left the podcast thinking, "Yep, he did it."

  11. Riddle me this:

If Thanos' whole deal is that the universe is over-populated and there's not enough resources to sustain everyone, then why doesn't he just use the Infinity Gauntlet to create more resources?  He can reshape the very fabric of reality to his will. Why does half the universe have to die?

And then what happens when the universe repopulates?  is he gonna have to snap his fingers again?  I don't think Thanos has thought his cunning plan all the way through.

The thing is... There's a saying amongst comic fans: "Nobody stays dead except for Bucky, Jason Todd, and Uncle Ben."  And even then, Uncle Ben is now the only one to have actually stayed dead. You kind of expect deaths to be temporary. Such is the world of comic books. So, yes, it's easy to look ahead and see who has sequels planned and which character makes money and oh, this is a comic book movie, nobody stays dead... That's not the point. The point of going to watch most entertainment-driven movies is to get lost in the moment; to immerse yourself in the world on screen and forget about everything else for a moment. When you allow yourself to get emotionally invested in the story at the moment, it's very easy to have the emotional response that many people are describing during Gamora's death, or BP, or Spider-Man (which was EXCELLENTLY delivered by Tom Holland. "Mr. Stark, I don't want to go." Fucking heartbreaking man)

But like many others have said, I think some of the OG Avengers, namely Stark or Cap will be sacrificed for good in A4 and that will be even bigger because of the sense of finality both in the movie and moving forward.

    Spoiler

If they do kill off Cap, I'm gonna be bummed.  Easily my favorite character out of all these movies.

Why the fuck would you be scared of a coral snake? You'd have to pass out on top of it and have it gnaw on you for 5 minutes before you'd be in trouble.

I was not aware of that.  Alls I know is that they'll kill a fellow.

For profit/corporation-owned prisons is bullshit, gotta keep those beds full.  The whole LE apparatus is geared to incarcerate as many as possible, so everybody from the cops, district attorneys, judges, etc. are in on the game.

Private prisons house less than 10% of all prisoners.  Not suggesting they're not a problem, but they're not as big an issue as they're made out to be.

  15. Was about three feet away from a ~2 foot long coral snek this weekend at the Tahna Keeta scout reservation here in South Florida.  Too busy wiping the poop out of my pants to get a picture.

why does it say rickon’s death “unknown”?  does ramsey not kill him in the books?

Not to get too much into the details, but the show has passed the books, chronologically speaking.  Generally, the books have only reached the end of season 5, although not for every single character or subplot.

Is it just a complete lost cause to try to address their concerns to whatever extent is necessary? In my (admittedly ignorant) opinion, it seems like this is just some automated/zero tolerance fuckup kind of conclusion that they arrived at, and that we should be able to remedy things pretty easily, at least as long as there's a reasonable human (i.e., someone with more interest in actually doing their job than the disinterested Martyn character) for us to appeal to.

They do have a support forum - maybe a few more eyeballs on it would help.  Maybe if we asked to speak with Martyn's supervisor?
