  1. This was one of my favorite topics on the old site, surprised to see no one has resurrected it yet.

Then again, making fun of dumb college students and professors is really going after the low-hanging fruit.  But whatever, it's entertaining.

Let's start with the fat cunt who couldn't react to Barbara Bush's passing with a modicum of class, or at least silence:

Here is the face of the modern American intellectual:

  2. Quote

“We brought Rodney in to the studio,” says Jon Peters, Caddyshack’s executive producer. “He comes in wearing this aqua-blue leisure suit and takes out a plastic bag and does two lines of coke. He undoes his shirt and says, ‘Where's the p----?’ ” It was a hell of a first impression. Dangerfield would end up getting $35,000 for his role. And though he would always credit Caddyshack for launching his movie career, he would often do so while complaining that he actually lost $150,000 on the film, having given up a month of headlining in Vegas to shoot it.

    LOL.

I'm somewhat partial to the theory that Varys is a Blackfyre Targaryen.

So it's said that when Barristan Selmy killed Maelys the Monstrous in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, that this was supposedly the end of the male Blackfyre line. The key word there being male, so there could still be a female line still around. Maelys came to lead the Golden Company by killing his cousin Daemon. Since Daemon is the predominant name in the Blackfyre line (like Aegon in the Targaryen line) perhaps Daemon was the senior line and his descendants would have the superior claim.

So we assume that Daemon had a daughter and that after her father was killed she fled to Lys (where Varys is from), or perhaps she was sold into slavery there by Maelys. Then the daughter has 2 children. Varys and Serra. Varys ends up in Pentos and befriends Illyrio. He convinces Illyrio to save his sister Serra from slavery. Illyrio ends up failing in love with her, and having a child. That child is introduced in the ADWD as Aegon. This has been Varys' plan all along, to install a Blackfyre on the throne, now he has the male to do it. It also explains just what Illyrio is getting out of all this, which is a long time open question that Tyrion picks up on right away.

Side note, this could also explain why both Varys and Illyrio respect and welcome Barristan Selmy since he killed Maelys who killed their grandfather and paved the way for their line to become the dominate Blackfyre line again.

There are also some more clues dealing with Varys pointing to him being a Blackfyre:

    • It is shown that king's blood is very popular for blood magic rituals. Blood magic rituals like the one that Varys was involved in when he was castrated. It suddenly makes a lot more sense on why he was chosen for this if he had Targaryen and Blackfyre blood in him.
    • In the Dunk and Egg novels, Aegon V as a young boy, squired around the land with Sir Duncan the Tall. To hide the fact that he was a Targaryen, he shaved his head and was called "Egg". Varys is also bald, and described by Catelyn thusly "The man who stepped through the door was plump, perfumed, powdered, and as hairless as an egg."
    • Maegor I finished building the red keep and killed all the builders and architects. The reasoning being that only the dragon (Targaryens) would know its secrets. Well, Varys seems to know the Keep's secrets pretty well. which could imply that he's a "dragon".

I have a theory (yes it’s my personal theory) that Varys is a warg that sees through his little birds and other wildlife.

    -he cuts out the tongues

-he doesn’t write anything down or keep written records

-probably has blackfyre/Targ blood and related to Bloodraven

-The Powerful Wargs tend to have some physical abnormality  (Bran-broken legs, Bloodraven-missing eye, Varys-missing dick).

-There are points in the books where animals are noted in the presence of significant events.  The moth with Cersei in AFFC.

I like this theory, however Varys has claimed that he hates the use of magic because he lost his junk in a magical ritual.

Jim Butcher was building a house or something and didn't have a space to work, it's complete now so he should be back to work.  He's got some short stores coming out this fall, the next Dresden novel should follow at some point.

Just learned that Brief Cases will be released on June 5 and he's going on a small signing tour.  He'll be in Austin on June 6.

uh, we clearly have a subboard for best buy coupons, not for sale/trade

not to mention, most of the shit on imgur is from reddit, and that site hosts a massive number of sales/trades. many of which are used underwear.

    Whoops, sorry, my bad.

I don't know what more we can do on that front.  I haven't heard anything back from "Martyn."

Maybe hide the Best Buy Coupons forum from public view?

Urban fantasy Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher has been mostly better as it’s progressed, with a big leap at about book 3 or 4.

Been a gap since his last one though going on 4 years now. Hopefully it doesn’t peter out.

This has to be a new policy right? Shaggy  hotlinked a lot of images every day.

Yeah, but Shaggy predated Imgur, and probably only gradually started linking to it's images.  Surly popped up virtually overnight and no doubt caused a spike in traffic, very noticeable.

So this is why I keep seeing letters.jpg all over Surly? when this gets fixed will those automatically get turned into pics?

    This is serious business.

If imgur is really blocking Surly, it won't get fixed.  Shame, that is where I get a lot of the pics I post, it's a lot more effort to rehost them.

I just saw this in the theater last night, and before I get blasted on social media for my obvious racism, I'll bother you dicks with my thoughts and questions.

    - I don't understand how BP beat EK in the last battle. He lost the first time in a fair fight. Then he won the second and final fight. But there was no *training montage* or anything else to show how BP grew or learned a new move. Did he just get gud? What did I miss?

    - That last fight was crap, btw. Two CG dudes going at it. I can stay home and play Tekken with my kid for that.

    - Killmonger was essentially Baron Zemo. They killed my family, now I'm gonna burn the world down. Except Baron Zemo was specific in his plans (destroy Avengers) and also successful (broke up Iron Man and Captain America). Between the two, I think Zemo is more frightening.

    - Killmonger was also supposed to be a genius. Naval Academy grad (at 19...okay) and MIT grad. That never came through. He was more like a brute. It was one of those movie things where they just give credentials to people to make them sound cool, I guess.

    - BP didn't grow as a character. The mountain guy did. The guy from Get Out did. Those were the only dynamic characters. Blah.

    - My one piece of social commentary: Wakanda is almost like an alien world. A homogeneous, extremely advanced civilization existing outside the bounds of the world, with only limited interaction in our world. For now.

    - FInal analysis: it wasn't that great from a character development angle, and the plot was pretty boilerplate. Some of the action scenes were good. Some were groaners. I put it in the middle of the pack of the Marvel films. I don't think I need to watch it again.

I agree with most of this, but I still thought it was a good movie, worth paying a little extra to see in the theater.

I've seen a couple people in here write that they walked out in the middle of it.  Really?  Do people really do that?  Shit, I saw Highlander 2 in the theater and stayed through the whole thing because I thought maybe it would get better.  Maybe I'm just not that smart.

I'm not a vegan, but "Does it have a brain/CNS?" doesn't seem like an arbitrary line.

There is mounting evidence that plants have greater sensory perception than traditionally believed - even though they lack sensory organs.  They may not have "nerves" in the same way that animals do, but they do react to all kinds of stimuli.  It's not outside the realm of possibility that they "feel" pain in some way.
