Well good on ya, mate!  But in my humble opinion, if you really aren't boaters (yet); this spring is too soon.  Spend the time to learn the boat's systems.  They are infinite.  Learn to sail.  I mean really learn.  Take a few shorter cruises to get a feel for life away from the dock.  Put yourself in some weather so you can experience it, but not too far from shore.  You really don't want to learn all of this on the fly.  Things will break, and if you are totally unfamiliar with what it is that failed and how to fix it, you can get yourself in a little trouble.  But awesome for you.

I vacillate between thinking we're going way too slow and way too fast. Most of me wouldn't mind staying in Florida for 6-12 months but I'm leaning towards getting out and avoiding another summer storm and hurricane season. Our marina got hit by lightning several times and took out the electronics on a couple of boats.

I hear you on the maintenance. I dedicate a full day each weekend and a couple of weekday evenings working on the boat. I enjoy it but damn does everything take 10x longer than in a house. I installed a Vesper AIS transponder, VHF/AIS splitter, and new fixed VHF this weekend. I spent 16ish hours on that and still have work to do (need to feed ais/gps data to chartplotter, heading data to AIS, AIS to VHF all over nmea0183).

  2. What do you want to do?

If you want to charter big boats in the Carib with friends, then doing the ASA courses (up to bareboat cruising) will get you there.

If you want to sail around the lake then take ASA 101 and buy a small boat or join a club.

The ASA courses are good but nothing is better than time on the water.

My kid's bike lost the bearings on the front wheel. I thought I'd just go to Goodwill and find a cheap ass bike with the same size front tire. I ended buying a bike for $15 and showed him the "new bike". He thought I was awesome. Ended up buying a brand new wheel  for his old bike. Now he's got two bikes. /humblebrag

My son has gone through 2 walmart bikes in 3 months. Both with busted hubs on the rear wheel. I've been riding all my life, bmx and mountain, and I've never seen a hub lose its bearings. This is on my 10 yo sons bikes and he's not a big kid. Freaking insane what a pile of shit those walmart bikes are.

Thankfully this isn't the investment that I had to force my dad (87 years old) to dump last year. He was holding an "name" long-term stock for it's dividend; he had over 60% of his portfolio in T. Which, thankfully he sold in 12/17 around $35 as it is now under $30. It is crazy talking to him and all he cared about was the dividend, and his argument is that they had always paid and increased the dividend. I kept telling him, always right up until they don't.

I can sort of see the appeal of dividend companies for the olds.

Did you look into moving him into a dividend fund/etf like Vanguard's VHDYX or VYM?

  5. Rendezvous is kind of it's own style in Memphis: grilled ribs with greek spices. I'm not a fan and only went when out of town guests had to go because they heard so many great things about it.

Central BBQ is great but I don't know if they do dry rub. I also like One and Only BBQ and they have dry rub on their menu.
