Consistent Sweet Sixteens means you gotta legit program. Most Texas fans I know want that and mix that with entitlement that’s the floor but that’s not the same thing as thinking you’re legit. Our results the last 20 years ain’t legit.

I often tell people UT fans’ level of support of the basketball program is not deserving of success.  It’s why historically I’ve had different expectations for the football program than the basketball program, why I would’ve given longer leashes to the Rick Barnes’ and Shaka Smart’s both of whom seemed higher quality coaches than UT basketball fan support deserved.  These sentiments, however, have to be weighed against the disproportionate playing field of college athletics that gives schools like Texas a gigantic advantage over 90% or more of the country’s athletic programs, an advantage that is even larger in the still new NIL-era.

  2. Interesting opportunity for Rodney Terry tonight.  Win and get to the Sweet 16 and he likely quiets a faction that wonders if he’s the right man for the U.T. job while also perhaps keeping UT basketball competitive for recruits and the transfer portal.  Lose and an early tournament exit seems consistent with a .500 conference record and fall off from Beard’s rapid ascension of the program with only UT NIL in his toolbox to “maybe” keep UT basketball nationally competitive.

  3. Watched most of the 2nd half of St. Mary’s v Grand Canyon late last night.  That Grand Canyon squad is even better than advertised.  Won’t be surprised at all if they make a run to The Elite 8.  They seem to be able to get to the rim and thus the foul line at will with rim protectors at the other end. Very athletic

i picked auburn to win it all.

Top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency which history says is a predictor of tournament success.  Seemed like an excellent pivot pick, especially with Auburn ending up in UConn’s quadrant.  But……no…..

Good article, but I'm not sure I like this last take at compiling possible champions:

I would have considered how often the #X teams (whatever UCLA, 'bama, and UConn were) won the tournament.  They might not be all that much better than 3 out of 20, or even better at all.  It's a tough run.

Well I’ll say this…….there’s absolutely that I’ll be crossing current KenPom #1, UConn, off

what a combine for our guys on both sides. kinda makes me think some big time growing pains are in store next year for us.

Can’t say that thought hasn’t crossed my mind since departures became official, but if so, I would bet on them being more on the defensive side of the ball

This run killed me (plus some Astros pain - specifically '86 and '98)

It wasn't until Jan 4th 2006 that I even considered that maybe i wasn't cursed.

Oh yeah, that stretch was absolutely brutal, repeatedly blowing big leads.  I’m often thinking while watching times like this year’s Detroit Lions playoff run when statements are made like “The last time The Lions were in the NFC championship game was way back in 1992……” that I’ve NEVER seen a Houston pro football championship game since I was only 3 years old the last time one made it that far.  The list of current pro football cities never to play in a Super Bowl: Houston, Detroit, Cleveland, & Jacksonville.  And all of those cities have played in multiple conference championship games since the last time a Houston pro football team made it that far
