I think you'd be surprised. There are a ton of companies that rely almost exclusively on networking and prospecting by their sales teams as their primary source of new business. Every sales guy I know in tech and finance below the Fortune 500 level who doesn't work with channel partners sources a plurality of their own deals if not a majority.

Absolutely true. I source 100% of my own deals and knew that would be the case when I took the job. The part that makes it workable is that I can qualify/disqualify a prospect (school district) in about 30 seconds. Makes conversations at conferences and even through email really easy.

  2. Cold emails that a very general like in the OP hit at less than 1%. On the flip side I sent 5 very specific ones last Friday and got 4 responses that day. If you do some research ahead of time and can quickly explain why your product solves a likely problem they have, it’s a game changer.

Anybody that writes cold emails should follow Josh Braun’s free advice. When I got hired at my new job they said don’t bother with emails because they only get business through connections and conferences. Good thing I didn’t listen!

  3. Looks like the hill country has another chance for a round of rains this evening. The Travis basin is in the line of storms but I’m sure the force field will be up and running. It is one of the few remaining areas in central Texas that is still experiencing a drought.

  4. Been in a new role for 3.5 months with the first month being onboarding. I sell to school districts so it’s get something across the finish line this month or wait until next year.

Have a proposal out that would get me to my fake onboarding quota. Totally fine if it doesn’t happen in terms of job security because nobody really expected me to get this far this quickly. I also have a good base so I will be fine financially.

Usually takes 6-12 months to get a deal done. However it’s still nerve wracking to either hit a home run or strike out with no in between. I’ve teed this one up about as well as possible so now it’s just a waiting game.

  5. “Researchers found between 25% to 50% of the water running through Waller Creek — which crosses along UT Austin’s campus — is the product of leaky city pipes, UT officials said in a release. Those leaks provide a gift, allowing the creek to help nourish trees along its banks, even during drought conditions.“

    Good lord.

  6. I drove for Uber way back when it was a new thing in Austin. Rolled up to a house in pflugerville to pick up somebody with a man’s name. The garage door opens and a middle school/early high school aged girl start walking to my car.

When she was about halfway to the car, her mom pulls into the driveway PISSED off. She starts going off on the daughter and then comes at me. I show her the app and explain that I was here to pick up some guy.

Turns out it was the dad’s account and he was out of town. I pulled off and called the dad since his number was attached to the account and I was going to try to help him get out of the cancellation fee. He was a complete dick so I let it hit and went about my night. Glad I didn’t get shot.

Honestly, the complexity of descaling the engagement while figuring out how to remove Hamas from the equation is madly complex.

I won't pretend that I have a simple answer. However, I'm of the opinion that bringing leader of the US, supporting NATO members, Isreal and the Palestinians together to discuss is better than not discussing it at all.

The Hamas aspect is the biggest hitch in the path forward. I'm strongly convinced that descaling fighting without finding a way to remove their influence in Gaza will lead to continued attacks and more Israeli lives lost.

So, I guess my ask is why aren't the powers that be calling for some sort of round table. If they are, and I missed it, I'll own my ignorance.

I agree with your take on removing Hamas being the holdup in any peace talks. But I don’t see any round table being taken seriously by Israel. They see them as a deadly cancer they are cutting out. If you leave any, it can quickly resurface.

true, then you hop back to the other side of mopac and most of those kids are shitbirds.  I'm sure there's plenty of those at McCallum too but not as many I've heard

McCallum pulls from as far west as past 360. It borders Eanes in some areas and has the same demographics in those parts. There are always some exceptions, but the kids and parents are way more relaxed (in a good way) than neighboring districts and other HS tracks.

Having gone to Westwood and worked at a lot of these schools, McCallum would be my first choice.

  9. When I started this thread, Travis was 38.1% full. Despite being in the “rainy” season, we are now down to 37.1%.

Good chance for some rain tonight then it looks dry for the next week. Let’s hope it falls in the right places.

  10. In accordance with Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.0256, beginning with students enrolled in 12th grade during the 2021-2022 school year, each student must do one of the following in order to graduate: Complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  11. We have a neighborhood kid that build a trailer he can pull behind his bike. Has his mower, weedeater, gas can, and other supplies. He works hard but I’m pretty sure he cleans up. Many people prefer to hire him over a larger company even if he can’t do it all year.

Doing something like that teaches a lot of transferable skills such as sales, marketing, dealing with customers, managing expenses, cheating on taxes etc.
