I bailed on the new show after a few episodes. It felt like a generic shitty 90s show, and kind of made me sad.

I hated it at first, but each episode got better. In the end, it wasn’t bad. Hopefully, they can regain more mojo in the next season.

  2. Took a while for all the pieces to fall into place, but it looks like I will be a downtown resident soon.

Taking possession of a new apt on 5/1 at 1900 Pacific Residences (John Kirtland's place).  Cool people, great amenities, truly nice apt that is getting an all-new refurb right now.

Things are moving fast.  Gotta figure out how/when to move and get my Lufkin house on the market.

On to the next chapter!  Looking forward to terrorizing the city soon...!

  3. I had Brick & Bones the other night, and it was heavenly.  I'll be moving right down the street from it in a few weeks.  I guess I should just plan on being fat.

And a fried mushroom basket with gravy and ranch to dip them in.

You're absolutely right.  Was totally mandatory.

I never realized what a fixture I was there until the bartender said, "Where were you last Friday?"  That's when I figured my Friday-Night-Regular status had already been established.  Whether alone, with a girlfriend, or gathering a group of friends/coworkers, the Hofbrau on Friday was religion to me.

On a mushroom-related front:  I remember the two best places for fried mushrooms being right next to each other.  Completely different style, though, but the ones at Maggie's were pretty damn good, too.  Was my place for vetting dates back in the day.  Couldn't take just any random skank to Hofbrau, ya know?

Good Time Charlie’s is my go-to for CFS in SA now.  Used to be Mama’s Hoffbrau.  Josephine St. has a pretty good one iirc.

The very mention of Mama's Hofbrau pains me.  What I wouldn't give to get crocked on a full yard of Fuller's ESB in the old location again.

Isn't by their very definitions, immigration versus emigration (from an interstate standpoint), truly binary?  So are people coming here to flee oppressive state government regimes or are they coming here to onboard their coastal elitism into Texas?  Because every other week, the story is different and I haz confuse.  We all do know objectively that the state's demography is changing, that much we can agree on.  So is the net result of out of state relocates, bringing in a net gain or one side of the aisle or the other?  That's just how humans and ballots moving work.  I didn't invent borders or maths.  Though I did stay at a Holiday Inn in Temecula last night.

    I prefer the Hacienda Courts.

For those of you that pass through East Texas, we got a new-ish joint cranking out some good stuff here in Lufkin.  Boxcar BBQ on the south side of our downtown area.  In addition to the traditional meats and plates, they're inventing some crazy sandwiches, experimenting with sides, and cranking out some decadent desserts.  They also do pre-orders.

Just a friendly PSA from the Piney Woods...

I'm sure this has been asked in prior years, but the search function sucks more than the IRS...

What's the best way to handle Texas sales tax to ensure maximum deduction but also avoid federal, pound-me-in-the-ass prison? The IRS' income-based deduction calculator says we spent ~$30k last year, which is absolutely laughable considering my wife's penchant for setting cash on fire + 2 kids...but they can't expect people to collect and submit 1,000+ sales receipts every year to itemize, right?? Are there any super secret CPA methods or threshold amounts that are defensible or outright fly under the audit radar? TIA.

    Is this what you seek?

Well here is where things stand for me now.  Got mom into a memory care in Cedar park in a great facility (great as such things go), but the burn rate on that is about $6K a month.  The plan I BEGGED them to do several years ago was assisted living in this same facility.  The cost would be about the same as what it's costing for mom alone, had they listened to me, my sister and anyone with a brain not named Mom and Dad.  It would have been much easier for me to assist them, hire help to assist them, and generally manage the situation without having to handle, not only their care but now the dissolution of their home, and all those choices will fall nearly entirely on me.  My sister is willing to help, but she does not have the compassion nor willingness to make personal sacrifice like I will.   My Dad noticed and was wanting to change their wills so that ultimately I would control the estate (if there is anything left).

Interestingly my parents tried to "split the baby" on my parents wills, with me being the executor for my Dad, and sis for Mom.  Now that Dad Ithe only competent one) has seen things shake out he realizes who really was the best choice.  But I understand their decision then, not to want to appear to favor one child over the other.  But Dad now understands that I will be the one to do nearly all the heavy lifting, and my Sis is there, as long as it's not too inconvenient for her.  He was trying to call the attorney to make the changes, but I discouraged him from doing that, especially since he would be changing my Mom's will not his.  I may get fucked in the end, but again I am the guy trying to do the "right" thing.

Dad is still in pain, but I got a termpur-pedic bed delivered to my house in Austin, and moved him in with me last week.  My sister was sort of amazed, as she was going to be the one to take my mom in. Instead it was the $6K (the Lord has given us a miracle) option...  But I can't do anything but take him in at this point.  I could opt to chalk up another 5 grand a month to not have him at my home, but I can do a better job than anyone of getting him back.  Not that he will ever be 'back" completely, but functioning enough to be able to move into an independent living situation, and then move my Mom in with him.  This is all in the same place my Mom is already, so praying it will work out.  But damned if I am not turning out to be a hell of a nurse.  Dad was/is depressed, but I have been pushing him emotionally and physically.  My wife was commenting yesterday on how much better he is already doing after only 5 days here.  He is now getting up and walking religiously, and just getting up and down from sitting is helping his strength a lot. Plus I weened him off completely the hydrocodone.  He is gonna have pain, but the more he moves after being sedentary for nearly 2 months, he is regaining some of his mobility.  A week ago, honestly I was unsure if an independent living situation would even be an option.  Now I am thinking a couple more weeks with me and there is a real chance.

The negative is I am about to miss my favorite time of the year, SXSW down on Congress and the other Day and weekday music I love to see.  But the bright side is I am seeing progress, so hopefully my sacrifice will reap the rewards in the end.  On a bright note, we turned dad onto "Ted Lasso."  Which he was sure he was not going to like, before he got sucked in like everybody else.  He paid me a complement to my wife the other day, he told my wife that, "Steve is my Ted Lasso."  As I have tried to be a light of promise and possibility for him, when he was seeing nothing positive going forward.  I am making him adapt, rather than trying to change everything to make it easier for him, and he is Adapting to the mobility and the pain.

So while my life is completely compromised right now, I have great wife that understands the situation, and I can see my efforts reaping rewards.  Now I just need to get him in shape enough to be able to live "independently" without my full time help.  So for both of us there is a life at the end of the tunnel.  I just hope it's not the light of a freight train! 😉

You are a machine.  And a good son.

Wife is having the worst travel experience of her life on American right now. She’s exec platinum so she’s not a newbie.

She’s in Sydney on biz. She was supposed to fly from Sydney to LAX to DFW on Sat at 11:15 AM (aussie time). Flight was canceled and AA only has one flight per day out of Sydney.  She has spent numerous hours on the phone trying variations of flights back to dallas (through new zealand, asian countries). All are booked solid. She had to pay for another night in Sydney because fuck the customer.

Each representative she spoke with gave her a different reason for the inbound flight not coming to Sydney (mechanical, weather). Inbound flight is out of LAX and they experienced a downpour of 0.3 inches of rain yesterday. Weather in Sydney is 100 degrees and clear. No rational reason why weather is the issue.

As of now, she is booked on a quantas flight departing in a few hours from Sydney to DFW direct. Middle seat. Last row. She had a biz class ticket on AA.  She’ll become good friends with those standing in line for the restroom.

She may end up on the flight disrupters thread. Time will tell.

Each time she calls with an update or to vent, I channel Phil as I wake from my nap.

I fail to see the problem here, other than the personal inconvenience.  Book an airport hotel room, notify work (if needed), enjoy a good meal, chill out, and fly the next day.  Shit happens when you fly around the world for business.  Especially if there's only one flight out per day.  Not like the Aussies can pull a plane out of their ass.  And it seems like she voluntarily fucked herself over with the new trip home.

Most popular kid in school, got drunk in the High School parking lot, then proceeded to take his jacked-up truck and do donuts in the front lawn of the school, taking out several new trees that had been planted.  Jumped out of his truck, pulled a pistol, and blew his brains out in front of everyone.

Kinda fucked up the rest of the weekend.

I think so. Has a faiht hint of that smell to it when I just checked it. Incidentally, when I opened the cap again, it released some more pressure. Not enough to make a mess this time though. I'll probably take it back to HEB so they know about it.

    That's a good call.  Botulism ain't a good time.

Thankfully and mercifully, I have never lived nor spent a ton of time in East Texas. But those who have in recent times -- is it still kosher *ahem* to go around in public around large groups of people without bothering to cover up your hardcore nazi ink?

It's practically mandatory attire at the Lufkin Walmart.  And don't get me started about all the weddings that take place down by the Wrangler Jeans.

So, as a coffee snob addict, I had stepped away from my coffee preparation obsession for the last few years because it was getting out of control.

I bought a decent quality pour over electric Cuisinart coffee maker, stopped grinding and went with McDonalds already ground coffee (actually good), and filtered water from the fridge. I stowed the chemex, French press, metal filters, and other equipment.

It worked pretty well for a few years. Occasionally we would have a spectacular cup of coffee, believe it or not, but most often just a good enough cup. Never a bad cup of coffee, which was our goal. So it worked. Low effort. Low cost. Good enough.

Well, now I’m obsessed with trying to figure out why we sometimes get a great cup of coffee and sometimes don’t. It seems like a tiny tiny difference in grounds used makes a massive difference. That, or the water temp in the cuisinart is on the fritz. Or the water. Or the freshness of the grounds, or….

McDonalds from a Cuisinart?  When you start slumming, you REALLY start slumming...!

    No middle ground, huh?

    Hotel Valencia

You are right next door to Acenar, which is usually quite friendly.  The food isn't bad, plus a nice view of the River.

You are also in walking distance of Domingo and the Otro bar.  Check out Domingo online and consider a reservation.

When/if you're wandering the Riverwalk, pop in at Boudro's.  Their food is great, but...at bare minimum...order a round of Prickly Pear Margs and get the table-side prepared Guacamole.  Watch the world walk by.  Just sayin.

If you want SA old-school, however, you're gonna need to get in the car and go to:  Blanco Cafe on 1720 Blanco.  Taco House on San Pedro.  Teka Molino on San Pedro.  You should dig all of those.
