I'm 64 and have always been engaged in some type of sports.  Spent a lot of years running on sidewalks.  First it was my knees.  I lost about 25 lbs and the knees are OK now, not great but not terrible.  Lately sitting at my desk or any chair other than recliner has killed my back.  Playing golf or pickleball (yes I do that now) doesn't seem to aggravate it but sitting just kills me.  Went to the doctor last week and got some muscle relaxers and some weak ass pain medicine.  Advil worked just as good.  Went back to the doctor yesterday and got a shot of cortisone and lidocaine.  I felt better when I went to the doctor and a little better when I left.  Played about 2 hours of pickleball, slept fine.  Came to work and sat down at the computer and fuck there it is again.  I listen to a golf podcast called Chasing Scratch and they have been discussing one guys back/hip issues and damn if it doesn't sound just like mine.  Maybe the hip and not the back.  Oh well Rant over, let me go shake my fist at the sky.

Check the golf thread in hobbies.  There's some exercise a dude was discussing that really helped.  I was considering looking into it, but I'm too lazy to link the thread.

  2. I agree it's not required.  But when when the wind picks up, and the otherwise-venerable WSM goes absolutely ape-shit with temperature fluctuations, having a temp controller has been nice.

Same. I also like to run it overnight and not have to pay attention at all. That’s where the computer comes in.

  3. Story on CNBC this morning about food companies starting to make smaller portioned food with better macros (higher protein) to cater to Americans on these drugs. Projections of 10% could be taking these drugs by 2030. Seems low. 24% are on statins, which I suppose could drop as these weight loss drugs are more widely adopted.

This is extremely positive news for everyone.

    Empty calories suck.

I looked at those, but looks like way overkill.  The C/B door seals it well enough for me.

I think the C/B on mine just never settled in quite right.  SO, I overcompensated.  I'm pretty damn happy with it.

It looks far superior in design to the PBC and I can tell from the pictures that it's well built.  My guess is that the chimney versus the tiny rebar holes on the PBC means better flow and less contact time with the "fog."  In any event, great looking brisket.

My WSM is far from stock.  It has benefited from the Cajun Bandit door, a gasket where the center section meets the lid, an Arbor Fabricating charcoal basket that will hold 30 lbs of charcoal, and a BBQ Guru controller.  The last bit of kit is a great add on, but I did fine for years holding temps be closing off two vents and closing off the third to the width of a pencil (I actually had a pencil in my BBQ box that I used to accomplish the feat of engineering).  I also put a notch at the top of the center section with a grinder to make running probes easier versus the probe port (so there's a little leak there but nothing to write home about).

  6. I'm sure the answer is here but this thread is long.  What's the best resource for learning to smoke?  Just go to YouTube I imagine?
I have an WSM on its way.

If you want to get started, google “the minion method” and burn a fire after you assemble it.

Then repeat with a pork butt on.

Then go back and read this thread while it’s smoking. And YouTube.

  7. Has anyone from Hays, Blanco, or maybe Llano County chimed in? Well, except for that one smooth-brained ditch digger from earlier today who, perhaps, wishes he hadn't?

    Hays County Smooth-Brain checking in.

We had a couple of healthy trees split. The yard looks like shit with tree shrapnel everywhere.

Husband was smart enough to put the truck in a car wash bay. No damage.

I can’t believe we didn’t lose any windows or a skylight. We got lucky. I picked up 2-3 baseball sized hail pieces in our yard. That shit sounded like Armageddon when it hit. It looked like a tornado was next, but got lucky there too.

Probably won’t be lucky with the roof but we’ll see.

Now that sounds interesting and entry worthy.  I have never heard of pickled gizzards before.

Seconded.  I bet they look like little forensically preserved brains on toast.  Can't wait.

My wife still doesn't understand how a thermostat works. We are damn near 50 years old. She is a smart enough person to grasp the concept. She has a Masters degree. What kills me is that she just doesn't want to. If i try to connect the dots I'm mansplaining.

It's not just wives.  My husband is a smart man.  He refuses to act like an adult around a thermostat.

  10. What gets lost among all the right wing crying over student loan forgiveness is that, at least in previous rounds (not sure on this one), these were loans that SHOULD HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN ALREADY. By the terms of the loans when they originated.  The government just wasn’t following through on those terms. Biden made it happen. That’s why conservatives can't stop him.

Also, the fact that people don’t see why this is a good thing overall is stunning. Well not that stunning. But it’s sad. People against this are just petty.

    I got caught in this.

I refinanced my loan when I was advised that forgiveness would “never happen.” I was paying over 6% for a grad school loan for a public health degree. Refinanced to 4%. I still owe. I still work in public health and have for over 20 years. I more than qualify but cannot move my loan back.

Mrs GOTJ continues to make steady progress. Lately she's been big on a high fiber diet which is supposed to help mitigate several of the changes. Of course she's now spending plenty of time in the restroom dealing with the side effects of eating a bowl of Colon Blow cereal each morning. One of the biggest challenges is her getting her progesterone filled since it's stocked out of pretty much every pharmacy in the area.

That's one of the reasons I went online and I've had a great experience thus far.  If you have a local compounding pharmacy, consider switching and asking for a cream if you'd rather keep it local.  Also, the progesterone is filled with peanut oil so beware for those with allergies.

I'm just not cut out for the modern world.

Nothing made outside of PA should ever have the Martin name.

Damnit.  I told my husband about this and now he calls my guitar a Martinez.
