The bigger risks, in my mind at least, are institutional cheating through rev share scams and the newer NIL big swinging dicks not named Texas just continuing to do whatever the fuck they want to do and the NCAA/House clearinghouse police not doing a damned thing about it.

Imo seems like a safe bet. The NCAA hasn't been able to enforce anything in ages, I don't see that changing now just because a consulting firm is involved.

From Spiegelman. Pretty easy to read between the lines here.

Texas has been trending for the Temple(Texas) four-star EDGE since logging his official visit to the Forty Acres on June 6-8, which ultimately led to Carlton nixing his plans to return to Texas A&M the next weekend.

The Longhorns are fading in this one as July 10 nears. Baylor has usurped Texas as the team standing at the top — and Texas Tech has emerged as a legitimate contender late. Carlton officially visited Texas Tech in May and has continued to trend up in this recruitment after half a dozen trips to Lubbock since last spring.

“Texas Tech has stepped up a lot,” he told Rivals. “Regardless, they have always been there. They stay in touch every single day. They’re very consistent … Going down there to get the full experience, to see how they do everything, how everyone is in the locker room, how the players are … They vibe and they treat each other like family — on and off the field. Listening to the coaches, seeing how they coach, seeing how they develop people, and what they can do for me to turn me into a man … it benefited them a whole lot.”

The Red Raiders have plenty of traction to close strongly vs. Baylor here.

How is this dude borderline 5 stars if his top options are Baylor and TTU?

  3. The real concern here shouldn't be about Ojo or even this class as of July. The concern is that the paradigm has shifted and Texas appears to no longer be playing the same game as other schools. Before House settlement, Texas was the one doing the money-whipping. Now it seems to have reversed.

Several people on here/9.95ers supposedly in the know have alluded to some schools not stopping at the settlement cap through various means. Maybe the current admin/staff will be different but pre-NIL Texas liked to play by the books. That means going back a similar disadvantage Texas faced against bag gamers.

All that being said - I always believed the House Settlement would even the playing field in a negative way for Texas. Even if everyone were strictly compliant, the financial advantage Texas previously had is now much smaller on a relative basis.

  4. College baseball is weird. Vandy (fairly) earned the 1 seed despite only one batter hitting over .280 on the season and their top 2 starters with ERAs over 4. Similar story for Texas.

Meanwhile teams like LSU and Arkansas, even Louisville, have 5+ guys hitting over .300 and similar pitching.

  5. Kirk Bohls with this report:

With the addition of 10 football players out of the transfer portal and probably one or two more on the way, the budget for next season’s Texas roster has grown as well. It currently sits somewhere “between $35 million and $40 million,” which counts the likely revenue-sharing allotment expected to be $20.5 million as well as payouts through the Texas One Fund, a connected source tells the Houston Chronicle. This also figures to be a one-time exorbitant expense because athletic director Chris Del Conte and others have said the school plans to phase out its collective in favor of the revenue-sharing via the House settlement and with the move to name, image and likeness payouts through corporations. “It’s just unsustainable,” the source said of the high payouts. “The next season after this year, the whole world will be back to reality.”  The source declined to reveal how many Longhorn players will command at least a $1 million salary because such transparency foments comparative discussions and locker-room chaos. … Head coach Steve Sarkisian applauded quarterback Quinn Ewers for not taking money from the Texas One Fund although the Texas source said he got some but was paid the bulk of his money by corporations “so Texas could have more good players around him.” … Quarterback Arch Manning is “by far the highest-paid Texas player,” as expected, but doesn’t take a dime from the school. He and his family acquired all his deals on their own “with no help from the school.”

Texas Longhorns will spend between $35-40 million on football roster

The reason Cooper has said it has nothing to do with draft position. It's the data that says QBs that enter the NFL with under 25 starts have a low success rate. They made it clear they're aiming for 25+ starts of development.

I hear you but that's a lot easier to say when you don't have a guaranteed $50 million contract on the table in front of you.

Might also depend on who is drafting at the top. We all remember the Eli saga. Going to Cleveland would be a lot different than, say, hometown New Orleans.

  7. Suspend him a couple games for speeding at 2am while high but also for being a dumbass and telling the cop he's high and going to 21+ clubs.

This certainly isn't a bad offense for a college kid but good learning opportunity. Can't let blatant stupidity go unpunished even if it's something 90% of people have done in college.

That’s what I don’t understand. If this oline sucks ass again or has depth issues then this draft made no sense

I don't see anything to indicate they upgraded the OL this offseason. They shipped out their best OL in Tunsil, added a few JAGs like Trent Brown and Cam Robinson and drafted the one 2nd rounder. Probably better depth than last year but I don't see an overall improvement on the starting line unless someone improves quite a bit.

  9. Kind of interesting that the staff seems to be prioritizing portal additions with multiple years of eligibility left. Mosely, Brad Spence, Kanu, Endries if it happens. They don't seem as interested in the one year rental types other than DT where they didn't have much choice.
