Brooks and Sanders together again.  Do they have OL?

They signed 2 new starting guards in free agency so should be a lot better, at least on paper. According to PFF at least

How does your GM still have a job? And is he on some kind of bender? In the last few months he has:

    1. Passed on Bill Belichick in favor of Raheem Morris

    2. Gave Kirk Cousins $45mm/year, same as Mahomes makes

    3. Despite 2, reached for a QB at 8th overall

    4. Traded a 3rd rounder to move up 8 spots in the 2nd, then reached with that pick

  3. I haven't been following the team as closely this year so can someone succinctly explain why everyone is so up in arms against Pierce? Seems like he has been good other than this year. 3 CWS appearance, pretty much always top 10.

I like the Clemson coach Bakich if he does get canned. Comes from the Corbin school, took a Big 10 to a runner up finish, now doing well at Clemson. But first get ATM to give Schloss a Jimbo-level contract lol

Yeah I don’t know either. It looks like 1 (COVID season from 2020-21) but does he also have a medical shirt for the year he only Played 7 games?

Burnt Orange Nation report said 1 but the Arkansas reports when he entered the portal all said 2, so yeah idk

edit: looks like he did get a medical redshirt - Tramon Mark - Men's Basketball - University of Houston Athletics (uhcougars.com)

  5. The cancelling future years thing is definitely weird. Maybe that was a Diggs requirement to go along with this peacefully. Regardless, I liked the deal a lot before this news but that 2nd round pick seems a little pricey for a 1-year rental.

  6. Hunter is a good defender and good when he can get a head of steam going to the basket. His shooting is average and his handles/creating bad for a PG.

If he could bump his 3pt shooting just a few %, he'd be a good 3 and D type of 2-guard. We definitely need a true PG though and multiple guys who can create things on offense since Abmas and Disu are gone.

tl:dr he can be a good role player but shouldn't be asked to run an offense

  7. Most of Surly the past two years: Sark sucks, fire him! Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot!

Most of Surly after one top 5 finish: You're a pussy if you don't think it's smart to give him a deal at the same level as multi-title winning coaches like Kirby!

Y'all need to stop riding the roller coaster so damn much. Year 1 was too soon to judge him but claiming he's a slam dunk now because of one year is also foolish. He definitely deserved a big raise and 10 isn't crazy, but history has shown that long-term fully guaranteed deals based off one good season are not wise.

Regardless - idk if this means it is fully guaranteed, hence the original question. Will also be curious to see what the buyout is if he were to leave. Hopefully it's a lot higher to help prevent renegotiating again soon.

So what’s next for Saenz?  Is there just a driver swap and he goes to Mercedes?  One of Ferrari’s big sponsors, that’s closely affiliated with Saenz, just left for McLaren but they are currently in good shape driver-wise. I’ve seen Sauber/Audi and Aston Martin mentioned as real possibilities.

That's what I want to know. What about Red Bull for Perez? Although I saw somewhere that Sainz/Verstappen didn't have the best relationship when they were teammates.

He'd win a lot more races at Red Bull but obviously be clear #2.

    Mercedes would be interesting.

Sauber/Audi seems like a big risk. He'd be #1 but their car sucks at the moment, no chance of winning races.

Aston Martin would be cool if they could ditch Stroll but that'll never happen because pops owns the team.

I'd like to offer something for everyone to consider regarding this hire.

If the guy is charismatic and not a buffoon, he's going to have a high likelihood of being able to land whoever he wants to land on the DL front.

    Why?

    A) Banks and Sarkisian get involved with the high level recruitments. I want to say Choice does as well, in some instances. It's not like they're going to make the poor bastard go it alone.

    B) NIL is very likely to be as competitive for Texas on the DL front as it is for any other school or position.

So, will recruiting be a slam dunk at DL? Probably not. Is it wholly dependent upon the person in role? Absolutely not. Texas will mostly get theirs, though.

There are two other areas that should be drawing everyone's attention. They're also where this guy will be made or broken.

    1) In the near term, is the guy a developer of talent? I am not saying he is or he isn't. I don't know enough about the dude on that front. Don't act like you do either. This is the key area where Davis excelled and is an elite position coach.

    2) In the longer term, is the guy an excellent evaluator of talent? I don't think we really know if Davis did a great job on this end yet. I think seeing what become of his recruits will remain a work in progress. There are plenty of bad ass DL players in college and the NFL that were low 4 stars and 3 stars. Some of that is development and some of that is evaluation. I assume, if Baker isn't just a total bust, he'll be here for the next 3+ recruiting cycles. Given how few DLs of high quality make it to the portal, and how competitive those recruitments are out of the portal, this aspect of the job is probably the single most important for Baker's success and Texas' playoff future. It's a pretty fucking risky area and I hope he's going to be able to kick ass on that front.

So, tl;dr, anyone worried about recruiting with the new guy is wasting their anxieties in the wrong spots.

I watched about a minute of one of those interviews someone posted and Baker came across very well. Definitely seems charismatic.

  10. This is definitely the most surprising hire Sark has made so far but it could end up being a great one. There's nothing saying the guy is bad, there's just not much saying he's good either. Very limited track record either way.

The Choice comparison is silly but actually this hire isn't all that far off from Chris Jackson, who only had 4 total years of coaching experience (all NFL, 1 on defense, 2 as assistant WR coach). Granted, Jackson had a long playing career too.

Now we just have to hope hope the new Special Assistant - Defense can help coach both the secondary and DL..
