  1. Sooo, maybe I can spoil him anyway. I showed him the Monta Noble and he was intrigued. We have an anniversary approaching so I'm filing that little bit of info away to check out as a possibility. He seems to prefer the 'plain' watches and this was the one I marked:

    image.thumb.png.bfdcada7aea9e6f031a59d043465baf8.png

It's got the second hand sweep (a must) and the date (preferred).

Probably moot as I don't see it getting funded. He's a great watch designer but he needs a 3-4 month promotional tour on Instagram with a lot of top photographers/watch accounts to generate interest. He also needs to get it reviewed by some of the big watch blogs/websites.

Plus he needs to be realistic about how many watches he can sell at over $1k on Kickstarter. It isn't going to happen. Sucks because he's a nice guy and the watches are really cool. Just a bad plan.

There's another account on IG @talkingabouttime who is a buddy of mine here in Houston. He has some amazing shots of them from a few days ago.

You're not kidding about the promo/marketing. I mean, Omega and other well known companies grab brand ambassadors (Andrew Garfield one of their celeb famous ones, while Ryan Gosling promotes Tag Heuer) because red carpet types or business 'influencers' (gawd I hate that word) photos are pored over by males and females alike and that is the larger audience of fandoms and general public but for a newer small company, getting on board with the insta/watch fans/etc to create some buzz seems like the most ideal and less costly way to do it.

I hope he's able to make a go of it.

  3. While I personally prefer gin to vodka in the martini, and the gin drink reached peak popularity during Prohibition (due to the ease of DIY "bathtub" gin) I'm not going to quibble with any imbibers over variations using vodka, nor the ratios (I prefer 4:1), nor the development of using London Dry versus the original recipes that used Old Tom style gin. What I would suggest is that when you've got the opportunity, try using Noilly Prat dry vermouth because I think it's worth the spend if you drink martinis much at all. FTR, we use Hayman's London Extra Dry gin on the reg, but have no issue subbing in other gins because it's part of the fun of mixing cocktails at home. Grab what's handy and go. But, sometimes (we) I want one that just tastes a little more luxe and that's what we use for a solid dry martini. With an olive. Occasionally dirty with a spoonful of the juice. Rarely a lemon because those disappear fast in our house.

  4. I would love to buy the white dial Treiber for my husband but he would kill me. I prefer the pale blue/green dial for the aesthetic and the cool factor but again, that would be a no go. It's a shame as we could afford for him to have a nicer watch than his daily but he is the 'if it's not broke why fix it' type and I respect it. But, yeah, it's a beautiful watch and I'd love to spoil him with it. (actually compared to some of the other watches I like and would like to buy for him, the Treiber is not that expensive really).

Wine with dinner and 2 martinis. Yea, I'm feeling no pain l

Gin or vodka? If gin, what brand?

I'm making a roast with veg tomorrow so we went light tonight with soup plus fried sardines with lemon & garlic on wasa crackers. Spouse was cooking so I poured a batch of Italian Grayhound cocktails to use up some of the grapefruit juice we had in the fridge. Mmm, I do love those.

    Focusness is a lost art.

It may be a lost art, but I'm not sure it's really a word. it's like "gifted" IMO. Why use focusness when one can use 'focus' or gifted when one can use the various forms of 'give'?

As in I gave, you gave, we have given....

We are descending into grammar chaos and it's so sad.

  7. No pics because I'm lazy and I take horrible photos but ended up making a Negroni while cooking the spaghetti alla puttanesca and assembling the salad (leaf lettuce, beet greens from the garden, pickled onion, radish, and a light dressing) accompanied by a nice bordeaux: Château Le Conseiller 2016. Not an expensive wine but it'll do. I'm lightly buzzed on a Friday night. Life is good. À votré sante!

For vintage car people, there a relatively new brand Treiber Timepieces, that designs watches based on old classics. The first watch was based on the '57 Bel Air. They are about to have a Kickstarter for their second watch based on the 300SL Gullwing.

The dials recreate the speedometer, but the case and lug design is asymmetrical and mirrors the eyebrow arches over the wheels. The crown replicates the radio knobs.

    Very cool watches.

Those pics are very very nice.

  9. Not so much a partier; but just having a meal and a cocktail, glass of wine, etc and conversation helps close out the work day. Making pasta tonight so a nice cab franc is on the menu.

  10. We've had several rounds of green beans harvested and one more batch is flowering and then that's the last of them. Tomatoes haven't ripened but are coming online soon. Lettuce is almost finished. I'm forgoing the peppers this year which is causing some regrets but after last year's heat and busy schedule I'm going to stop after the tomatoes, cukes, and zucchini are finished and hold out until fall on more veggies and just keep the flowers maintained during the worst of July/Aug.

Elon Musk’s Tesla ‘Supercharger Diner And Drive-In Theater’ Coming To Route 66

Tesla is getting close to opening its first-ever entertainment-centric supercharging station—a 24-hour diner and drive-in theater in Los Angeles that will play famous movie clips on a big screen while drivers wait for their EVs to charge.

Elon Musk’s Tesla retro-futuristic supercharging station is being built on Santa Monica Boulevard, which is West Hollywood’s stretch of the historic Route 66. Last month, Musk, the co-founder and CEO of Tesla Motors, revealed some details of the charging station saying “Our Tesla futuristic diner (Grease meets The Jetsons with Supercharging) in LA should be ready later this year.”

With his ten children and Supercharger Womb Room, I like how Elon is at least attempting to help his fanbois visualize what a uterus (and vagina) looks like even if it's not quite as accurate or as pleasurable as the real thing.

  12. Switched to fiction and read The God of Small Things (1997) by Arundhati Roy. Winner of the Booker Prize that same year (with some controversy) it was a compelling fascinating novel. Really enjoyed the author's method of narrative. Took some getting used to, but it worked for me as the story unfolded.

  13. Incredulity, It was just a little bit after that; the first vaccines for measles were licensed around the early 60s and the school requirement came around somewhat slowly a few states at a time until pretty much all had various requirements by the early 70's.  interestingly enough after there was an outbreak in Texarkana, where the measles cases among Texas children were twelve times that of Arkansas children (Arkansas had the school requirement but Texas did not), Texas got on board. By the time Carter was president, the nation was aiming for herd immunity.

However, other vaccines were required for school much earlier in the 20th century such as smallpox, diphtheria, and polio.

  14. It isn't a new movie, but we saw H Is For Happiness (2019) last evening and it was oddball, charming, sad, and hilarious. It reminded me of the Netflix movie, Dumplin,' with Jennifer Anniston in that it takes a serious topic and its effects from the perspective of the child/teen. it's a good watch.

    Spoiler

Set in Australia it's about a young girl whose family is grieving the loss of her sister and the estrangement between her father and her uncle over a business deal gone sour. A new boy appears at school and she befriends him as she is trying to 'fix' her broken family.

The two movies share something else but you gotta watch it for that.

    Here's a trailer:

One thing about the new Twitter/X is that without authentic verification, the Nazis can easily have multiple accounts similar to what this woman did with hers. She has at least 3 accounts apparently. People did that on the Dorsey version as well, but there was an attempt at least to minimize some of the damage due to bot swarms of hate, etc.

  16. It's Monday which is that ugh, meeting day where the asshats that can't get their ish together send out the agenda about two hours before the meeting so yeah, martinis are a good plan while dinner is cooking. Cocktail: martinis with Hayman's Extra Dry London gin, Noilly Prat vermouth, and a pick with 3 Mezzetta Spanish Queen Martini Olives served with wonton soup--celery, carrots, onions, parsley from the garden, and chicken broth. Four more days to the weekend but who's counting? I guess I am!
