  1. Finished season 2 in 3 nights. TV shows rarely get me like that anymore.

So refreshing how it’s an ensemble and every character is worth rooting for - and it’s not some dopey surface level show. Totally against the grain for quality TV over the last 2 decades.

The second half of the season was so good. May rewatch.

  2. This seems to be getting better. Adding depth to the characters has really helped; it feels less surface level lifestyle/HBO porn and more character story.  Still not great, but not bad…I’m enjoying it.

    the UK/Europe background definitely helps

Phil, DJ, Reed and Sergio can play The Masters every year for the foreseeable future. Phil has the next 4 years exempt for majors. DJ the next 3, I think.

Can’t imagine Reed is invited back after his lawsuits.

  4. Tough couple of weeks for LIV guys, especially with the OWGR points about to take a nose dive.  The major winners with active exemptions will stay relevant, but the others will be forgotten pretty quickly.

    The Outfit (2022)

I must admit, I thought it was poor  Yeah yeah, Mark Rylance - you could watch him sewing, I mean cutting, and it would still be worth it, but the support crew with one exception didn't hold up their end.

Agreed, did not like. Also kind of predictable.

  6. Wasn’t there a scene in an early episode with Carmy bitching to the older guy about getting tomatoes in smaller cans rather than larger more efficient cabs?

I loved this, but also feels like this could be great as a 1 and done show.

It's been kind of stunning to see the PGA caught so flat-footed in their ability to counter all of this.  I don't think "higher prize money" next schedule is registering.  Nobody seems to give a shit about the size of purse outside of golfers.  They just aren't going to be able compete with money.  Why even bring that up?  I guess paying for travel to guys who don't make a cut is a start.  It's complicated and it seems like they still don't really have any idea about how to handle this.  Is it because they're all just old and confused or are they not consolidated enough as a league?

Leaning into tradition is a narrow path that also eludes to stuffy and pretentious.  I'm not creative enough to think beyond leveraging tradition and legacy, which is clearly not gonna cut it.  The marketing graphics for Presidents Cup is a good example.  I'm a huge fan of Davis, but their poster looks like an invitation to a banking seminar.  They just seem ill-equipped for this.

The higher prize money was always coming since the new TV deal kicked in. The new schedule (starting in fall 2023) seems to be a more direct response to LIV by responding to player feedback for more of an offseason, etc.  It will be interesting to see how that goes.

I have to say that I do not like the PGA being in May.  I miss there being another major.  I won't watch another golf tournament that I genuinely care about again until next April. That sucks.

If they made the FedEx Cup playoffs more interesting it could fill the gap.

  9. No CR, but starting to identify a golf tour with Trump (or any political figure) is a quick way to eliminate a large portion of the population that may otherwise engage in this new product. I know profits don’t matter for the Saudi government, but it’s just a bizarre move overall.

  10. I don’t see how the OWGR will change its formula given who is on the board and even if they do it takes over a year for them to do anything like that. So assuming the majors don’t go out of their way to may exceptions for the LIV guys that aren’t past champions (PGA won’t, R&A was pretty clear on their stance last weekend, US Open prides itself on the qualifying system, and The Masters won’t want to expand their field), the LIV guys are all fucked from playing the majors unless they go play Asian Tour events (which is hilarious) or they are exempt by already winning one.  The Saudis are going to have to buy golfers for like 5 years straight for this to stay relevant, otherwise…is anyone really going to watch?  The schedule is already terrible for TV, so even if they get a TV partner you have to go out of your way to find and watch it.

Paying more out to players, not just top players. Stop pretending there wasn't more money to share.

That said Cameron Smith to LIV rumors only getting louder....

There was a $300M reserve fund for years like 2020 when a pandemic alters the economics of the sport.  I suppose you could argue that reserve fund is too big, but it’s not like there are PGA execs who are making tens of millions of dollars.  And I thought the whole point was the guys that move the needle aren’t getting paid enough, not that the other guys aren’t getting enough.

the new TV deal will help the tour, but I’m not sure any sport generates enough money to fight off the Saudi government except maybe the NFL.

Right now the tour strategy is to have its top players continue to speak out against LIV and add a little extra prize money. Their handling of this has a good chance of crippling the tour. Couldn’t come at a worse time with so much young talent in the game and Tiger’s career coming to an end. Fun times ahead.

The Tour will never have the ability to financially compete with the Saudis. I get the criticism, but what exactly should they be doing?

We were in Tuscany last September. Did a day trip to San Gimignano. Great city to wander through. Any of the hill towns in the Chianti region are always a good choice. Sienna is also a given.

Thanks. It would likely just be some wandering, an easy lunch with wine, more wandering, gelato, and then heading out. How easy are strollers in these towns?

  14. I’ll be in Bellagio (Lake Como) and Tuscany in September with my wife and our two small children (I realize a lot of people think that is insane).

I’m looking for any suggestions, but specifically day trips in Tuscany…
