  1. instead of your typical "I will be out of office from 7/1/25 to 7/15/25, I will have limited access to email and phone calls during this time" this asshole had to put in there "I will be out of office cycling the Spanish Pyrenees yada yada yada".   fucking cyclists

    160+ missing

Unreal. Abbott just said there are more than 160 missing people.

    yikes

I also wonder how many they don't know about, i.e. people from out of state camping in their 5th wheel, and the only record of them being there is when they checked in at the campground office that has since been washed away.  nobody will know they are missing until they never show up back "home", if they even have a permanent home

At the morning press conference, the city manager wouldn't answer the question of how many missing people they are estimating from the RV park and other recreational campgrounds. The reporter asked him "dozens or hundreds?" and he just said "Lots".

no matter what he says it is going to be the wrong answer

while thats true, getting the information to the camps  and being able to act on it  is the main issue, flood warnings are issued numerous times a year and actual flooding only end up actally coming to fruition occurs at a much smaller percentage. And then trying to wrap your minds around a once in 500 year flood that manifests over 5 hours at the dead of night is inconceivable.

I would assume the leaders of the camps had either hardline phone or internet and got the warning, but the main rains didnt happen until later in the day, and the actual rise was catastrophic at 2am in the morning.

there will be a shitload of fingerpointing and TJH and his team will wait a respectable day or two and then drop lawsuits on anyone associated with the hill country... and the loss of the kids will be lost in the process.

time will tell if there was enough time to actually warn the camps and for them to act on the information or if this was a catastrophe set the moment the camps were set up decades ago.

but acting like a single flood warning is a badge of protection is rediculous.

I hope the number of confirmed losses doesnt climb any higher but that seems unlikely.

I respectfully disagree.  When a flood watch is posted in perhaps the most flash flood prone region in the country, and the most flash flood prone river within that region, then the adults need to be on 100% alert,  if not take immediate precautionary moves to higher ground.  Yeah they may have been lucky the last umpteen times and nothing happened but when the lucky streak runs out it will run out in a bad way.

The idea of the water being 10’ higher than the 281 bridge is nuts.

ive driven over the Guadalupe so many times here I can’t really wrap my head around it.

I find that hard to believe as well, I guess we will have our answer in a few hours

You don't understand these camp alumni.

fair point.  my summer camp experience was getting to work for the local farmers so I got to deal with aggies which may or may not be worse

What’s a bit odd is that the forecasts seemed to totally miss this risk. There was talk of rain, mostly w of 35, but not of any major flood risk. It’s not common for forecasts to miss so widely these days.

they posted a flood watch for Kerr County and points westward around 3pm yesterday

“At Comfort, the Guadalupe River surged to 29.86 feet after rising 22 feet in 30 minutes, while at Kerrville it rose 21.6 feet in one hour, now at 11.64 feet.”

How the fuck do you get ahead of this?

don't build in the 100 or 250 or 500 year flood plain to start with

Press conference is getting very contentious.   Reporters wanted to know why the camps weren't evacuated, answer was I don know.   Yikes

I'll answer that one.  The adults in charge were not paying attention to the weather, or they said "nawwww the water can't go THAT high, it never has."

I honestly don't cook anything at 225 anymore.

same, I more often than not go high heat.

since this is about ribs there really isn't a set time  of x-y-z I work with anymore.  smoke uncovered until about 1/2 inch minimum is exposed on every bone.  wrap in foil with a few dollops of butter and a drizzle of honey option for 30-45 minutes.  then unwrapped to finish depending on how wet or sticky you want the bark, sauce optional
