I’m pretty sure Odessa and Beaumont are actually statistically the most dangerous places in Texas, but out of the big cities I definitely give Houston the edge on having the most creepy/scary neighborhoods.

Now that Art Briles left town, I’m pretty sure Waco’s greatest current danger is the crime against humanity that is the proliferation of that fucking ridiculous barn door in every house thanks to those jerks on the HGTV show.

My brother got robbed at gunpoint in the 80’s in Beaumont.  Only had $3 on him.  Guy was pissed about it.  Stole my brother’s brand new high-top tennis shoes and then took his keys.

Didn’t steal his car right then.  Not sure why.  But when I visited him he we pulled the wire off the top of the distributor everywhere we went so if the guy saw the car he wouldn’t be able to steal it

This is just complete bullshit. There are all kinds of proven examples that mask wearing by a majority of people (doesn't have to be all) can hold off the virus until it pretty much disappears. That's been shown in small lab studies but also large populations like Hong Kong, South Korea and New Zealand.

COVID is no longer ripping through in the northeastern US, and those states have been "open" except for large indoor activities. That region is nowhere near herd immunity and contact tracing is rare and ineffective. So it's simply masks and social distancing. If we actually isolated positive testers and did contact tracing as well, the numbers would come down even more.

There is zero evidence that herd immunity is a possibility.  The data just isn’t there yet.  People keep hoping it will happen but science isn’t on board with it until there is more information.

For those who were wanting to hear from Ricky.

I keep seeing this posted:  “let’s ask Ricky, Vince, and Earl about the song.”

Ricky, God love him, had a dynamite smile and personality when he wanted to, was a physical freak on the field, and just tore up opposing defenses.  Even fans of other teams liked him!  Who couldn’t like Ricky?

I don’t want his opinion on this.   He screwed up big time in the NFL, quit for a year to smoke weed and follow Lenny Kravitz around Europe like some sort of Deadhead, and lost a shot at being one of the all-time great backs in NFL history.

Will he be sober if we ask his opinion?

Vince has brought the best Longhorn football moment in most of our lifetimes.  It might never be surpassed unless a future Longhorn delivers a baby along the sidelines with one hand while running in the winning score in the national title game with eight seconds left.

A great scholar on a subject of historical significance he is not.  Evidently not a model employee either considering his work record on campus.  We love Vince for who he used to be on the field.  Don’t put this pressure on him.

Earl was the freaking man when I was growing up. I was a huge Oilers fan.  And it was because of Earl.  But I worry he has CTE.  He dished out a lot of punishment in the pros, but it came with a cost.  It’s hard seeing him on tv now.

When Ricky broke the record against aggy, Earl was there next to Tony Dorsett.  Tony looked like he could suit up.  Earl looked worn out.

When Earl was shown on tv with John David Crow in the last game against aggy, it was even harder to see.  Earl was in a golf cart.  He doesn’t get around well. Crow was 20 years older and still getting around pretty good.

Pick someone else.  Someone that wasn’t a superstar.  A black football player that didn’t get a pass based on being the best.  Get me a Donovan Forbes or even a James Brown or a Cash brother.  They all had moments (ok, not Forbes), but they weren’t in the same league with the greats mentioned earlier.

I can assure you that you did not have a hornfans account or even lurk there. You’re a traveshamockery.

    Ok there little fella.

    Feel better now?

I don’t recall if I had an account or not.  Don’t care.  You’re probably a millennial that thinks we should get a participation trophy every year.  You probably approve of the five-way tie in the mid-90’s when aggy was on probation.  Tech had to represent the SWC in the Cotton Bowl.  Tech!

Get this thread back on track.   I think we are circling back to “is it a racist song, or is it a racist song because it was performed at a minstrel show”.

20 pages of that discussion didn’t decide anything.

Look at this noob correcting people like he’s been around since Hornfans.com circa y2k!

I don’t recall whether I had an account on HornFans or not.  In 1995 I ventured into the ESPN college football message boards.  It was a crap show.

Someone there linked a smaller message board.  Jerome’s Chat.  Mostly soon-to-be Big 12 fans and some UF and FSU fans and a pissed off TCU fan I think.

Jerome’s Chat was pretty good.  Higher number of females that would actually post pics and one of them would chat up guys via Yahoo Messenger and send audio clips.  She ended up being the board trampoline   An NU fan that taught elementary school.

Oh, and a West Virginia fan that called herself Daisy Duke. But lived in Florida.

From there we migrated to Blacque Power, which was run by a CU fan.  Jerome ended up with jealousy issues when one of the female posters snubbed his advances and he got ban hammer happy.

I can’t keep track of all the sites I’ve had accounts.  Over time, you can get burned out.   GDGD made me batty until they finally let VY just be VY and quit trying to make him fit some Applewhite mold.  Crappy coaching and repetitive posts about crappy coaching over the years can turn me into a lurker.

All these sites end up getting stale when the team isn’t great.  Add in a pandemic and politics seeking their way in and a bunch of social justice warrior virtue signaling, and it makes it more interesting for a spell, but in the end, if the team loses 4-5 games again this year, we will see the same threads and responses over and over.

Been seeing it for 25 years.  And heard it in person or on call-in radio shows or read it in letters to the editor before that.

Some of you didn’t experience Akers and McWilliams.   We didn’t have a message board to discuss Mr. Mary Lou Retton throwing 4 td’s worth of picks to freaking U of H.  We had to sit around at home to gripe about it or discuss it at a bar.

Sportscenter might have existed then but you had to wait until kickboxing or go-cart racing or Star Shot (skeet shooting) was over.

Sorry for the trip down Amnesia Lane.  The older posters here will remember.

You younger types don’t know how good you have it, being able to berate shitty coaching right from your phone keypad to a bunch of other fans.

Some people sound like they think UF dropping a 20-something year old CHEER is equivalent to UT dropping a 100-something year old school song. Mind bottling.

Regarding the names of buildings and statues, I don’t really care if they rename, remove, or replace those that represent people who didn’t contribute significantly to this great university OR those who were significant national (i.e. GW or MLK) or state (i.e. Travis or Houston or Lamar) leaders. Do we have Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson statues or buildings? If so, replace them with people who contributed to the school, state, or country, personally flawed or not.

    Pipe dream, I know.

Mind boggling.  That’s the term you are looking for.  Nobody is bottling minds.

You probably want French benefits at your job, too.

Instead of donating to an amalgamation of groups under the politically divisive BLM umbrella, with that kind of money why not start a new - communities of Texas centric - foundation? Giving back through housing, infrastructure, mentoring, scholarship and celebration for African American communities. And if a national blue chip commits, it can be extended to the community that he wishes.

Or even better use the money to establish the preeminent police deescalation training program, where officers from poor and all communities would be honored at the opportunity to attend.

An extra offer, match every scholarship given to an African American athlete for another non athlete, maybe even surprise the recipients on campus.

    I don't know, fuck it. I'm retarded

Sooo,  it's probably been answered but what happens with graduating seniors if there is no season? Can Sam hang around and take basket weaving next year so he can play? I Know in his case he has a redshirt year plus his 4th year. I've heard the word unprecedented what seems like thousands of times since this whole virus started, but as far as college sports go it's truly unprecedented. Sorry to stray away from strictly virus talk to get a little football/virus talk in.

If only we had a blueprint on how to keep a starting quarterback eligible without him having to do much in the classroom.

Doubt it. Old timers are being replaced by corporate ticket buyers and transplants, who decidedly do not care. The students won’t care. I predict heavy financial adverse impact over Covid until it dies down.

On this note, my 69 yo dad and 65 yo mom are “through” with Texas football without the Eyes. My ten yo son didn’t understand and I had to explain to him that they’re set in their ways, and that the black players have some valid points, but that I did not believe the Eyes were one of them. I told him that the song in and of itself isn’t worth getting into a tizzy about, and his grandparents were being ridiculous. But, I wasn’t about to call them out on it, because they agreed with the building name changes, kind of agreed about Whittier, and disagreed on BLM. It just created an opportunity for me to tell my son why this is happening and why it’s important.

I failed to tell them zork from Surlyhorns.com wanted to devote half our endowment to be spent on payments to Ramonce Taylor and Rashad Bobino and BLM and other social programs. I didn’t want a goddamned riot in my house.

Maybe you haven’t seen the news, but we look the other way on riots now.  It’s ok. People are stressed and feel hurt.  If you want to flip and burn cars or loot Versace in Chicago or burn a Wendy’s to the ground, it’s ok.

Don't have to when I have friends who I can reach out to and can read all about it from Super Doctor sooner. If you forget, just ask him about the built practice "from scratch", has hundreds of docs to lead and also has institutions like Northwestern asking for his guidance ready and available on Surly. Yes, this great man is here with 6K posts, at all hours to lead us. The most efficient time manager soonerland has ever known. He's not just a brilliant mind, he likely can also tell you how ou's history is misunderstood.

    What's wrong with Walmart?

His ability to manage time so well is what makes him so successful.  He didn’t need four years for undergrad.  He knocked it out in a month.  He’s that good.

I had my annual physical a few weeks ago. I’ve know my GP for several years.  I know his schedule pretty well personally and professionally.  And he has been promoted in the system he is in and is now upper management over many people but still sees a limited number of patients.

Posting on a message board thousands of times is not on his schedule.  He has frequent insomnia.  He’s also a huge Marvel nerd.  I read Marvel comics as a kid so we talk Marvel in my visits to see him.

When he got the big promotion, I asked him if he would be ok with me getting him a subscription to Ultimate Marvel.  All the Marvel comics ever, available digitally.

I suggested he could read them when he travels or when he is up with insomnia.  He said he wouldn’t have time for it.  He’s got too much medical/work reading to do and wouldn’t get to use Ultimate Marvel.

Yeah, I’m not buying this internet persona.   One of several on here.  The fact that some of them have fan boys that have followed them every time the site changes names is just weird.

You sure do sound like a doctor and you have the blind trust of @C-Man, keep giving us your thoughts but no one should take your word for it.

No kidding.  I’ve been reading this toolbag’s posts for years.   At no point have I ever thought “this guy is smart enough to keep a high average in a STEM major, kill it on the MCAT, and not wash out of medical school”.

There are a bunch of people on every site, this one included, who are Walter Mitty’ing their way around all day.

it’s good that your long play troll has a bunch of people believing you are a doctor.  Why not?  We have some make believe attorneys on here as well.

You are probably some drunk ass Fiji that barely graduated and works at the business daddy runs, that grandpa founded.

Show me where people can’t be reinfected with this virus, Dr. Mark Green.  Link it up!  LINK IT UP!   OH OH OH!  It’s only right now!

Yeah you are.   Our doctors/nurses exposed that tested positive never got it again after hundreds of exposures.  It’s very rare to get it again - if at all.  Likely shoddy testing on those that think they got it twice.

edit:  also after hundreds of our nursing home patients tested every week...0.5% got it twice.  Zero of those had symptoms both times but we did isolate them again per protocols.

    You have no idea.

USS Theodore Roosevelt had multiple sailors get it twice.  South Korea is seeing reinfections in people.

There is no evidence of herd immunity.   This virus doesn’t behave like others.

You geniuses need to read something besides Surly once in a while.
