Can we figure out how to cancel Fox News too?

    This.
People sitting in their own "echo chambers" watching only "news" outlets affirming their idiotic opinions.
Facebook makes money by keeping people on it, so its algorithm just continues to spoon-feed people things that affirm their dumbass opinions, and they spend hours on FB, watching targeted ads and clicking "like" and replying, "He's the best president we've ever had."

From an outside Texas perspective, 98% of the rest of us don’t understand or give a shit about a little discomfort felt by oil and gas people.

Fair or not, that industry is in the same boat as pharmaceuticals - they’re big and bad and evil to “regular people”.

(As someone who worked in pharma for 15+ years, I speak from experience. It sucks when people revile you for what they THINK you do for a living.)

It's been real fun being in local media too.

Preface: I am extremely socially liberal, moreso than many liberals.  But I agree with the right wing talking points on things like fiscal conservatism and state's rights over large federal government (I do wish they'd actually give a shit about these things instead of just talking about them, but that's another conversation).  I'd listen to a moderate Republican who didn't want to strike down women's right to govern the insides of their own bodies, if such a Republican existed.  The point of all of this is that I'm not a straight-line liberal.  Socially liberal, fiscally conservative, but not a libertarian.  I'm a man without a party.

    This right here.

im not worried about Hispanics in other states too much, but the ones in south Florida seem like they are susceptible to Trumps lies and tricks. Pretty sad.

Cuban hispanic vs non-cuban latin american hispanic.  That weird dance with the Castro factor affects everything.  The over-arching blend of family still in Cuba, Communist regime, economic embargo, bad Cuban policy hits home with them.

It is dumb. The people behind the Lincoln Project don't give a shit about their public image, they are fighting for control of the GOP. They are the ousted regime waging a civil war within their party, it isn't any more complicated than that.

Very similar (but fewer disingenuous smiles) to the conservative takeover (and Baptist civil war)of the Southern Baptist Convention.  As odd as the Baylor folks are, their tight network of alumni kept the state baptist convention in Texas from being taken over, like in most other states.

  7. I know one research project that just went into the field at the first of the month in the Lake Charles area, to study how hurricane risk perceptions and responses were affected on an individual scale by risk perceptions and responses to COVID-19.

Hurricane Delta threw a huge monkey wrench into that whole research project, so they're trying to amend the project to account for potential differences in the perception and response between both storms.

And now...  Pellets.  How long can they be stored and under what circumstances?

I'm in the Houston area and humidity sucks.

How much should I keep on hand and where?  It's not like I can have multiple 20 lb bags inside (in the house vs. In the garage) and I'm not even sure that would help all that much.

Assuming I'd like to cook every weekend, do I need to buy before hand or is there a way to store them outside in some kind "dry" container?

In Tulsa, the humidity was high enough over a month of winter non-use to deteriorate the pellets in my Traeger hopper and congeal the dust in the auger, jamming it.  It's pretty easy to disassemble, and clear the jam, and it's fine now.
However, if I expect a period of idleness, I'll remove the pellets from the hopper and store in a freezer ziploc bag (and run the auger long enough to clear the tube (and wet/dry vac the little smoke pot).
I buy the pellets by the bag from Amazon (full wood), and store in a plastic Kingsford charcoal container.  One for mesquite, one for hickory, one for pecan

I’ve been in a 24” diameter pipe before for confined space rescue training. It was uncomfortable. I chickened out on the 18” diameter pipe. Everyone else went and got thru but it was too much for me.  You can’t move your arms or legs, and you shimmy thru a couple of inches at a time by bending your ankles and pushing with your toes. Some of the smaller folks might have been able to use their elbows a bit.

    Oh no, absolutely not.

Voted this morning in the Austin metro area as soon as the polls opened. No line at opening. In and out in ten minutes. Thanks to both intelligent posters on surly, and the shitty behavior of the Republican party, our votes moved left quite a bit.

This right here.  Same.  Sadly, there's a shit ton more rural red on my side of the Red River though.  You may have seen them at WalMart.

  11. More on the Wichita arrest:

A Wichita man has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple over frustrations with the city’s mask ordinance, the mayor and police said Friday afternoon.

Meredith Dowty, 59, was booked into Sedgwick County Jail at 6:05 p.m., Friday, booking reports show. Police confirmed he is the suspect and said he could face a charge of criminal threat.

Whipple said he had been read a series of text messages received by another city official that asked about Whipple’s address and contained a detailed threat against his life.

The apparent motive was the suspect’s opposition to “masks and tyranny,” Whipple said.

“He said he was going to kidnap me and slash my throat and he needed my address because I needed to see the hangman — me and everyone who, something about tyranny,” Whipple said.

“It sounded like the person was very upset about pretty much mask mandates and he said something about not being able to see his mother because of COVID restrictions on elderly homes.”

Wichita police spokesman Charley Davidson confirmed that the department is investigating the threats and that so far, no other local officials are believed to have been targeted.

The suspect is a well-known local musician who performs under the name “Cathead” and has played numerous gigs in the Wichita bar and nightclub scene, said Joe Stumpe, a musician and former Eagle reporter.

He plays guitar and harmonica, Stumpe said.

Dowty is a retired Wichita city firefighter who was honored by the Wichita City Council in 2008 for his role in saving the life of a Wichita police officer who was shot in the line of duty.
