Check back in 10 years. There's about 5 miles of real open country between the south end of Ames and the northern most Des Moines suburb.
It's not yet, but it will happen in my lifetime.
5 miles you say?
Do you realize how many strip malls with vape/ cbd store, cell phone store, tanning/massage salon, and a gas station with a wall of six liners that could fit into that amount of space?

I know, I'm saying to us, 40 min from the big city is nothing. Most people's commute to work every single day.
30 miles north of Des Moines? That commuting from The Woodlands to downtown.
On a good day, on a bad day, might reach North 610.
I do agree that it is pretty funny listening to people react when they learn just how far people drive in Houston and the Metroplex and just the square miles covered by both.

I read online that Pettis Norman died the other day at age 86. A Dallas Cowboy in the 1960s, I remembered that my dad once told me a story about meeting Pettis during National Guard activities, in the mid 1960s. My dad is 89, and no longer drives so when I visit, I drive him to the grocery store, dr visits. We were driving the other day and I mentioned Pettis dying and he remembered the Annual Training in the Guard in the 60s when he put 6 Dallas Cowboys through the gas chamber.
It was my dad's first Annual Training with the 36th Infantry Division and he was the chemical officer in charge of the gas chamber and other things. My dad is mentally very sharp and also talked about spending five days in flamethrower training. He said that was one of the summers when they put everybody in the entire division through the gas chamber.
Anyway so we're talking and Dad remembered Pettis as a tight end and remarked that he remembered one other Dallas Cowboy, but not his name. Dad said he was that "really fast guy".
"Bob Hayes?" I asked. "You put Bob Hayes through the gas chamber?" "Yes, Bob had a little bit of trouble, didn't put the mask on correctly".
Got me to thinking, wondering how many old Dallas Cowboys are left from the 1960s. Obvious two big ones are Roger Staubach and Bob Lilly.
.
A very under appreciated athlete for the stands he took in Dallas and what it cost him.
Curious how many here know the connection between Norman and "North Dallas 40".

That TCU education is really paying off.
I have been to both and there isn't much at either besides the schools.
Thought it was nicer to say that than the middle of fucking nowhere. Not Pullman bad, but not much around them.

Does anyone want to go to a Methodist Hospital location for any services with the shit ass job they are doing being the official healthcare system of the Astros?
Curios if Jake was even seen by a doctor for the original calf injury.
With Alvarez, he has supposedly been seen by multiple specialists.

Uhhh.... Why?
Agreed, he has a losing record in conference play, had one great year, and they are decent, but nothing special.
Basically a bald version of Matt Campbell.

Espada’s quoted in Chandler’s article that they didn’t do any imaging of Jake’s calf upon the initial injury. The medical staff didn’t think it was necessary. These guys have to be the dumbest mother fuckers on the planet. After everything that’s happened including the failure to identify fractures in Yordan and Tucker, they still didn’t think Jake needed any imaging. Stop being cheap and get every test/xray/image taken. They will never learn.
Not as if they would net to get if first approved by the player's health insurance.
How hard is it to ask the damn hospital system that is partnered with you to open up a time slot for a player to get imagining done?

I just looked up how feasible moving the Big 12 CCG to Arrowhead would be in this scenario, but unfortunately the Chiefs are home that evening.
Yes, let's move more shit to Kansas City. While we are at it we should move the baseball tournament back to OKC.

Sorry - Amazon series.
To be fair - I like the first Cruise film (only one I watched), I know he is 100% the opposite of Jack Reacher, but I am convinced that Cruise can play any role that he sets his mind to.
Not a problem and only asked because I know somewhere buried in this thread is the debate about Cruise playing Reacher.
I agree Cruise is versatile, but I do think that while Cruise did portray some of the traits that make Reacher such an enduring character the one thing he can do is be the hulking presence that is Reacher and what seems to put him in some of the situations he finds himself, even when he tries to avoid confrontations.
Take for example the fight in the first Cruise movie where Reacher beats up the 4-5 guys in the street. In that movie the result is unexpected from them because he is an "averaged" sized guy on film and why should they expect to get their arses beaten by one guy.
Not a bad season, but not really the Reacher from the books.

I just picked up this show last week - great show. I complained in the Murderbot thread about the plodding of the story and no likable characters - Nothing like that here. They got all of that right and hook you from episode 1. The story comes out fast with a perfect hook at the end of episode 1. The good characters are quickly identified and interesting, it doesn't hurt the dialog really makes them like-able - even the bad guys (met later) are like-able. And the lead actually has some damn charisma.
Just for clarification, are you talking about Cruise's version in the movies or the Amazon series.......

National CFB writers across the board are absolutely bereft of any common sense or useful analysis. They never cease to miss the point or look like utter fools.
Most national media members are valued on the amount of shit they spew, as well as the toxicity and volume they speak instead of quality or accuracy of their work.
I have found myself listening to a national broadcast from time to time, say after an Astros game when working the garage, and I truly can't believe the shit that is broadcast.

I mean he’s proving the point of what’s broken, he’s purchasing players within the current wild west landscape. I absolutely hate that we’ll have to compete with that going forward but how can anyone criticize someone buying players for his alma mater when it’s completely legal? The article was tldr but I did browse and his primary proposal is that media rights be pooled instead of sold by conference. I think it would broaden the overall pie significantly. I would assume distributions would be based on ratings though so the more popular programs still end up way ahead. At least that’s a valid metric.
The reason why sharing revenues works in the NFL is there are agreed up rules and the group as a whole work somewhat together and they don't try to skew the formula. Teams can generate additional sources of revenue on their own, but the split on the league contracts are the same across the board.
How does sharing revenues level things when he is one of the very people making an end run with money's being paid to players outside the revenue sharing agreements? A common theme among the Big 12 coaches is we have fucked this thing up and there really is no control right now and they weren't referring to the conference.
The problem is not whether doing it is legal or not, it is whether or not it is pushing things closer and closer to the next big change in college sports and that isn't going to be for the better.

If memory serves, EA preemptively pulled the plug on NCAA 2015 in September 2013, a full year before the O'Bannon ruling came down. At the time, Johnny's shameless post-Heisman self-promotion party, questionable dealings and travel budget, and the Manziel family trying to trademark anything they could were all over the sporting news. If the NIL tea leaves weren't already obvious by that point, Johnny beat them over the head with the inevitability of it all, and the NCAA's toothlessness.
The lawsuit was filed in 2008-09 and attempts were made to get it thrown off prior to the 2014 trial because the NCAA knew they were fucked if it went to court, Pryor was ruled ineligible for trading memorabilia for compensation in 2010, and any attempt to put any type of positive or noble spin on Manziel or his time in College Station leading up to the NCAA agreeing to play players is similar to the supposed Patton speech some old Ags like to quote or the myth of the 12th man as Gil didn't even get in that fucking game.
Once again, piece of shit grifter playing for a piece of shit grifter.

Evans has 82 catches for 1105 yards (13.5 YPC) and 5 TDs that year. He had 5 catches for 40 yards in the Bama game that basically cemented Manziel's Heisman. A great year for a freshman receiver, to be sure, but he was used more as a possession receiver in Kingsbury's offense. It wasn't until the following year that Johnny and Spavital very transparently put an emphasis on staying behind the LOS and proving to NFL scouts that he could throw the ball down field...and many turnovers ensued.
In 2012, Johnny had 1400 rushing yards and 21TDs on 7YPC to go along with his 3700 passing yards. Before Lamar Jackson came around.
There are plenty of valid reasons to take the shine off Johnny's Heisman (the SEC being down with utter garbage QB play that year being tops among them), but the narrative that he was just throwing up jump balls to Evans all year is just lazy and factually wrong.
Fair enough, will stick with him being an alcoholic piece of shit grifter, who was raised by a family of grifters, and played for an alcoholic grifter in Sumlin.

I'm sure he did, but Checo was still able to drive it very well for the first while. It wasn't until last season where it got to the point that he couldn't handle it anymore.
Your right, Checo finished I think 3rd, 3rd, 4th, and then farther back last year.
How much is it crap inside the team? How much of it is the loss of brain power as just off the top of my head:
Newey - Aston
Marshall - McLaren
Wheatley - Audi
Fallows - Aston
Courtney - McLaren
I am sure there are others I have forgotten, but looking at that list there are some huge losses to replace and I am sure Horner fighting with Marko didn't help the environment.

Campbell’s “plan” is that the B1G and SEC share TV revenue with the B12 and ACC
Fuck Cody Campbell and Tech and there is no way he is the answer to anything other than name a booster who is only making things worse in college football at this time.
I don't always agree with Sonny, but it is pretty obvious who he is referring to at the end of this clip:

I think Newey's original design for this rule set was really great, but maybe they were close to the limit of how much faster it could be made to go especially when he wasn't the one working on it anymore. As a result they got desperate and started tailoring it even more to Max's ability because it was the only way to get any more speed out of it. It got undriveable for everyone else as a result because they aren't an all-time talent.
Newey has said that when he designs a car he took into consideration that styles and preferences of the lead driver to tailor the car to their ability.
Curious if they would go send Lance outside to play whenever the "adults" at Aston talk about the car for 2026.

Liquor stores yes, but the restaurant depends upon where you are in the Houston area.
The one given is a donut shop run by a Vietnamese family and on the counter by the cash register(s) is a Fortune Cat figurine.
Restaurants vary from Mexican to Indian to Pho and you might hit a strip without a restaurant pad, but 2-3 food trucks or a vendor selling produce and Mexican cokes.
