Many of the opinions here about Baby Reindeer are from posters whose opinions I respect. Plus I heard about it from some real life humans that normally make good recs, so my wife and I sat down to watch it last night.

We made it midway through the second episode and then clicked out. I found myself cheering for the disgusting tub of goo in dark ways because I despised the main character so much. Once I realized that my preferred ending, one in which she murders him violently and then commits seppuku in front of hundreds of appalled onlookers on a comedy standup stage, couldn’t happen because the dude is still alive, I lost all interest.

I felt very much the same way and was about to give up on it, too, but decided to stick it out.  Once I watched the rest of it, it all made sense but in an extremely fucked up way.  Like the other poster said, it's a very honest (seemingly) portrayal but beware because it can be very triggering for some.

Did you ask for a replacement?  There is no crime in politely asking for your $30+ / lbs order to be replaced if it is not up to standards. A joint like that takes it in stride and doesn’t want bad product to go on paper.  Heck, Luby’s will replace a bad serving without hesitation.

That didn't even occur to me at the time because I was in a food coma from the ribs and sausage.

  3. I must have gotten a bad cut of brisket at Pinkertons a few weeks back because it was pretty meh. The ribs were on point though. They were amazing.

  4. Just finished Revelation Space.  Not bad, and knowing it was his first real novel makes sense. Some things were pretty superfluous to the plot and it dragged in the middle but the ending really picked up. It's like he got so caught up in his world building that he realized he needs to actually end the book. I'll probably read the next book in the series, Chasm City, since the general tone is that his writing style improves and give it another shot. Is that a fair representation?

Taking a small scifi break with a thriller/suspense (The Last Word) before getting back to it.

Just thought of a crazy scenario….

What if Lawrence is finally tired of paying for his sons after school program, Red Bull gets their way with Sainz and Checo goes to Aston. Hmmmmm.

Preaching to the choir I know, but If Aston is truly serious about competing for championships, then they need to have some serious reflection on keeping Lance as a driver.  Imo, he did his part well in helping get the team to where they are now as a pay driver, but AM is now ready to take the next step with a better #2 driver. The results so far this weekend are about as glaring as you can get.

Replacing reserves seems to be the every slide deck these days, so I guess the industry is going to start spending money on exploration again.

Anybody work PRB? Is it the next big play?  My company surprised many of us by replying with a firm no when asked about selling our Powder business unit.

I remember Wood Mackenzie was excited about it 2017, but I took another job to work Permian and Delaware.

It seems like the Powder is perpetually on the verge.  The Turner seems like the best rock these days, but it's not really unconventional.  It's low porosity sandstones.  You have a lot other of these near shoreface sands up section like the Sussex, Shannon, etc. that have produced conventiknally for decades and now operators are sticking Hz in the fringes. They make good wells, but the areal distribution is limited and you can have pretty serious pressure communication issues making it difficult the scale.

Niobrara is decent, but it's more clay rich vs the silty organics (hybrid) down in the Permian. Mowry is the next bench down but that's more gassy plus we'll cost is higher.  And most of the better source rock is towards the southern end of the basin.

It's a fascinating basin with value for sure, but it's just harder for it to compete if you have Permian positions with stacked prolific benches in a portfolio.  I'm sure there's above ground issues as well. The Permian is truly a geologic, geographic, and economic Goldilocks.

The problem isn't the price. It's crude type and the integrity of the caverns themselves. We will see about the latter.

Can you expand on this? What is the integrity issue with the salt domes? Over geologic time, sure, but are you talking about something on human time scales?

  9. I've been blowing through series in recent years.
    Series I have finished:
The Silo Saga, Hugh Howy - 3 books, enjoyed all of them
The Final Architecture, Adrian Tchaikovsky - 3 books, loved them all
Children of Time Novels, Adrian Tchaikovsky - 3 Books, they are exceptionally well done, but I can't say I really enjoy them.  They frankly make me feel sad
Undying Mercenaries, BV Larson - 19 books so far.  They're light, fun military Sci-Fi.  As long as you don't take it too serious, they're a blast.
Steamborn Series, Eric Asher - 7 books so far.  I love the setting of steampunk, but have never reallyr ead much in it.  This came on some amazon recommendation and I've enjoyed it so far.
Expeditionary Force, RC Bray - 15 books.  Much like Undying Mercenaries, it's light, fun military Sci-fi and absolutely hilarious.  Loved it.
Frontlines, Eric Dove - 8 books.  I think this series is finished.  More serious military Sci-fi, but not too deep.  Enjoyed it as a light read.
The Long Winter, AG Riddle - 3 books.  Loved the first one, kind of liked the second, really didn't care for the third one.
The Interdependency, John Scalzi - 3 books.  I read the first one back in 2015 and completely forgot about it.  Picked up the last two last year and while it wasn't bad, definitely not his best work either.
Academy, Jack McDevitt - 8 books.  I read these on and off for years.  Loved the early ones but really felt the last few fizzled out.
    Stand along books:
The Doors of Eden, Adrian Tchaikovsky - He's a really smart author.  This book was a little difficult at the beginning, but I really liked it overall.
Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir - Not as good as the Martian, better than Artemis

I'll check out Undying Mercenaries based on this because we have a bit of overlap looks like. Thanks.

The first four novellas of Murderbot Diaries are awesome, too. Loved them all and saw that Apple TV is picking it up. They seem to be targeting the scifi market from what I can tell.

Currently on The Girl with all the Gifts at the moment. Not bad so far...

  10. Crossing posting from winter thread. Fuck Miles.

Re: no heat at Love. It was similar at Harvard Elementary. No heat yesterday and today. A lot of the older campuses have so many bandaids it's ridiculous. Requests to replace the HVAC system have been made but it keeps getting rejected...big surprise.

I get that it's not cheap to update old schools with modern equipment, but can the people bitching about books, bathrooms, vouchers, etc please just sit down and let the adults fix actual issues such as these? We are sapping resources when we need them most. And the Miles comes out and says he regrets closing schools on Tuesday? GTFO with that BS.

  11. The NFL as a whole lost me again when millionaires who get paid to play a game started telling me I'm racist.
I won't give a shit about Dallas or the NFL again until they knock off the bullshit.

Lol with this take. No one told you you're racist and you know you'll keep watching. Calm down.

  12. Whatever happened with the much ballyhooed Cline shale play on the far eastern end of the Permian? Wasn't there supposed to be 20-30 barrels in it or was it just a big bust?
It's still a thing and there are some full developments of it besides just single wells here and there. But it's so clay rich compared to the Spraberry and Wolfcamp that it's just so far down the queue of development. Also, the Barnett in the Midland Basin is now a legit bench (not everywhere, though) and operators are putting capital towards appraising that now, too. It's basically a $60 oil bench before you start thinking about it.
