I bought Thunder Creek Ranch in 2002, NW of Utopia and west of Medina.  A series of tropical storms had dumped ~ 17" of rain over a few weeks that summer and it looked like a tropical paradise. Thunder Creek was the appropriate name for the area, then.

Hi Neighbor, our ranch is out that way too. We've had property off 337 since 90's and have definitely noticed a decrease in rain fall out there within the past 10 years. We do rain collection for flushing toilets and taking showers and I'm expecting to have to truck it in over the summer if things do not change.

It's pretty sad when the family text chain blows up over the .07 registered in the rain gauge this morning.

  2. I’ve got the kids out harvesting some collards as we speak. We planted a few different types of greens and some broccoli this fall. The broccoli is coming along nicely but just seems to grow so slow and I never seem to plant enough for a decent haul.
We are still picking jalapeños and serranos, they just won’t quit. I also have a few tomato plants that still look good. I’ve never held on to tomato plants through the winter, any idea if they will produce again in the Spring?
Can’t recommend David’s Garden Seeds out of San Antonio enough, everything I planted from them last year did really well.

  3. Bumping this ancient thread in the hope of some new info from the Surly hive mind.
I’ve had sciatic nerve pain for the last several months that will not let up. An x-ray showed “mild disc narrowing” at L4-L5 so my internist sent me to PT. I’m in week 4 of therapy (at twice a week) and seeing minimal, if any improvement. Maybe I’m just being impatient, but I feel like even my therapist is thinking I should be getting better by now.
If anyone has any Austin dr recommendations, I’d love to hear them.
I’d just like to sleep through the night again and also maybe not feel like my leg is on fire while making coffee in the morning.

    I’ll hang up and listen.

Wasn't a fan either, as while I rarely need 1lb of carrots, I never need 2lbs.  Mine has the loosies though, and 3-4 is usually what I need anyway.

I wondered why I never saw the 1lb bags anymore. The loosies always just taste better to me for some reason.

  5. This is happening for Christmas Eve lunch tomorrow. My in-laws wouldn’t know good food even if it bit them first, but I’m the chef this round so my rules. Hope it’s as good as it looks.
Cedar Park Costco was insanity this morning, even before official opening time.

Weather.com and big national weather sites are largely hot garbage for local coverage.  Find a local news guy you can trust.  I like the CBS Austin team as they are decidedly non-hype.

Anytime someone quotes weather.com or whatever their phone says for the weather, I get all judgey. Ain’t nobody got time for that stupidity!

  7. I like free samples as much as anyone,  but I kindof wish they’d do away with them on the weekends. All that jamming up at every other end cap is a beating.  I guess no samples during the Covid years spoiled me.
The Cedar Park location has been sampling Ruta Maya coffee again for the last few weeks. The sample guy puts out little bags of coffee to take home and people are practically yanking them out of his hands. We’re talking golden ticket in a Wonka Bar levels of stupidity.

  8. These are really good if you’re feeling like some fried fish but don’t want to smell the kitchen up. I cook them in the air fryer, make a homemade tartar sauce and let the kids splash their own malt vinegar on them too. Big hit in this house.

I once heard that fast food places sign very long leases -- like 20 years -- and so some zombie restaurants you see are just operating to avoid breaching those leases.

I feel like that has to be the case with most Wendy’s in Austin. I know of a couple near me in northwest Austin that are always deserted.

    Best (the store)

Children’s Palace (if Toys r Us didn’t have the sega master system game we wanted, Children’s Palace across FM 1960 usually did)

    Sports Town USA

    Oshmann’s

If we didn’t whine for toys at Children’s Palace, sometimes we stopped at that Two Peso’s in the same parking lot afterwards. Good times.
