Not really related to your point but I was thinking about Kerry Wood this past off season. He is my age and back in 1995 when he graduated from High School College Baseball was for guys who couldn't make it to the Minors. Now with the shrinking minor league systems and NIL we might be seeing pitchers of his caliber playing in College now. That is pretty cool to think about.

College baseball (the bigger conferences at least) has the change to blow minor leagues out of the water thanks to NIL. It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, milb gets whenever the MLBPA and MLB come to an agreement. If it's not much, we could be in for exactly what you posted about, which will be amazing (especially for us).

No. It’ll be the same thing. We’ll give up hits and whatnot but we don’t really walk anyone. So yeah that’s part of having an elite defense. Fielders help out the pitcher and the pitcher helps out his fielders. Kinda how baseball works. Do you expect us to strike out 20 a game or something?

Yeah man, you got it. I expect a Kerry Wood performance every game. Good point!

That's something I was wondering too. Maybe I've been hallucinating all the games this season (hobbes would say so...), but I feel as though he's been called on in the 8th a few times already. It would be nice to get to the 9th reliably and then hand him the ball.

Actually just looked - 3 out of 6 appearances have started in the 8th, and 5 of his 7 walks (and one WP) have occurred in those 3 appearances. Maybe small sample size for now.

Did he go more than one inning much last year?  I was trying to remember during one of the games this weekend, but couldn't.

Maybe that whole quick warmup and rest between innings kind of fux with him?  Closers can be weird that way.

Well, really only against UCLA when the pitching got stretched a little thin by not getting 5 or 6 from Witt.

But, yeah, some of the "dregs" of our pen are a little suspect at the moment.

I mentioned in one of the game threads this weekend that I really do like the early season strategy of letting these pitchers get themselves out of these jams. I'm glad Pierce left in Duplantier even through the next inning instead of yanking him in after the GS. These games pale in importance to the conference / late season games, so getting that experience in now will be great.

We have 34 walks in 108 innings before tonight. We had 10 total walks in 3 games in Houston. Throwing strikes hasn’t been a problem until tonight.

    ”endemic”. JFC

I mean, reading comprehension. I specifically said relief pitchers. 8 of those 10 walks this week were relief pitchers in 10 innings. LSU stranded 12 runners, Tennessee 8.

Regardless, glad we are winning. I think it says a lot about the talent level. Hopefully we can straighten it out come conference play.

  7. Does anyone have a runners stranded stat for opposing teams on the year? TXST just stranded 10, I think LSU or Tennessee (or both) stranded double digits.

Clearly there is some skill involved from our pitchers to get out of those jams, but also a lot of luck. If we can't throw strikes we may be hurting come conference play.

  8. I think the strategy was to basically give that lefty nothing to hit since first was open and we only had one out. But, as much as I like winning and want to win this game, I really do like the idea of leaving these young guys in during these situations. Obviously it's a hard line to balance, especially not wanting to tank their confidence, but it's a tightrope that Pierce and Allen have walked beautifully so far. It'll help us in the postseason
