Good advice for Keys thread. Although I just get a bag of claws from the shop up front (have them cracked there) some mustard, and some fish dip. Grab some cold beers on the way to your rental and the evening is set. Maybe pick up some Dion's chicken to eat cold on the boat tomorrow for lunch.

That said a favorite vacation I recommend to friends is to rent a place for a week on Cayo Costa (IDK how they fared after the storm) But cool little place to fly or boat in. Sand streets and golf carts, cool rental houses, and chill vibes. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and beer. Probably in that order.

We’ve never had an issue with no see ums outside of fishing the really low tide mangrove areas at dusk.
Disagree on the swimming side also, there are plenty of places to pull in and get in the water. Would I go in the inner islands, no. If you are on the outer islands like Kice or Cape Romano, or the outside islands further south, no problem. If you want more water clarity (Kice is generally pretty clear at the cuts) then you can skip around to the other side of Marco and run to Keywadin or run really far north to Lover’s Key/SanCap. I don’t want to sit on a beach cheek to cheek with people, I’ll take west coast over east coast 7 days out of 7.
I don't really consider Kice/Romano to be part of the area I was describing. Yeah I guess it's in 10K islands. I've camped on that shoal out there, it's a shell covered wild beach, so that's kinda cool. More outdoorsy than beachy though IMO. I've been from Tiger Island down through Whitewater Bay, I've run Tin Can Alley and the outside to/from Islamorada many times. I wouldn't swim in there for two reasons:
- Sharks
- Fucking Sharks!
As for the west coach beaches I'm not a hater, but the OP asked for recs within an hour of Wellington. The other poster asked for east coast recommendations. So Cayo Costa didn't make the list.
As for crowding, Hutchinson Island beach access points will be less crowded at noon than pretty much any west coast beach. Once the flotillas arrive, it's just as crowded if not more so. As for cheek to cheek, east coast cheek >> old mid west, west coast cheek.

If we only had a Neg cannon that mounted on our bumpers. We could mark those drivers! Most negs get their license revoked!
I always wanted a device that you could aim at a car and set off their airbags.
Being in S. Florida with the crazy aggressive drivers, I totally get having a student driver sticker on the car for the kiddos. I mean they don't even know how to pack a mag and eat their MickeyDs at the same time. When I see one of those stickers I do cut them some slack.
<RANT> Those mofos sitting at a green light staring at their phone can EABODs! They get the horn instantly, and not the polite beep beep horn either. </RANT>

This is a much better idea than driving to Key West for the day. Taking a boat out of Goodland to fish, shell, sightsee the 10000 islands will be more memorable than the clusterfuck the drive to KW is. For me, there isn’t any place better than Sanibel down through the 10000 islands. You can still get out and find a place to set up with no one else on it. Saying that, SWFL beaches aren’t like typical gulf beaches so if you are looking for clear blue/green water and white sand don’t bother, go further north past Venice /Sarasota to AMI or that area or stay on the East coast. It will also be a little warm that time of year, so be prepared. We get out early, avoid the mid day sun, and go back out early evening. If you need recs on the area, I can send a few.
No one besides half a billion mosquitos and no see ums. Beach camping on the outside of Choko was fun until the full moon rose over the bay. Incredible sight but the leeward side of our cooler was black with no see ums.

I booked an Atlantic coast trip because I wanted it to be a more adventurous type of vacation instead of just beaches every day. I haven't been planning on doing much beach stuff other than a couple of days. Boating to and swimming off an island sounds pretty fun.
I would NOT go swimming in the 10k Islands/Chokoloskee/Flamingo areas, not that you'd want to.
East coast beach recs
North to South
- Jupiter/Hutchinson Island: (above) If you want to be away from crowds, Hutchinson is the place imo YMMV
- Red Reef Park in Boca Raton: You'll pay to get in and park, nice beach nice facilities, the price keeps the crowds down some.
- Deerfield Beach: pay lot by the SE 9th St. By the Embassy Suites (there is some diving off the beach just patch reef but you will see some fish) It's just far enough north that you might get a little swell rolling into the beach.
- Lauderdale By the Sea: Just south of the pier there is good snorkeling and a decent little patch reef. LBS is a little tourist town that gets it mostly right and there is food and entertainment and it's not over developed (huge beach hotels)
- Haulover Beach: Miami feel and a nice wide beach in Dade that isn't on S Beach. There is a nudie beach on the north end if that's your thing
- Rent a boat and go to Boca Chita / Elliot Key / snorkle Fowey Rocks then finish up at the Haulover Sandbar (that's a full day start early)

Yeah,
The reason I don't have a place in the keys is that I want more out of life than fishing and drinking. In the keys that's all there is... world class fishing and drinking. Well world class drinking anyways.
We used to rent a place down there in the summer, but it's a small redneck town in a beautiful setting, and that's it.
PS They had more than 500k on the walls at one point. They were staring down a hurricane and decided to thin things out a bit. I love a royal pizza but it's almost $40.
I'd rather go to Mangrove Mamas

Thank you for the suggestions on the way down! I get that its just a touristy gimmick, but it's an opportunity to create a memory with my kids. I'm not dead set on making that trip just yet, but I'm considering it.
They'll remember the first time they see a shark / flying fish / barracuda. Also just be aware, the Keys don't really have beaches, not that you can access without a boat or that don't stink to high heaven. (Smathers in KW *might* be the only exception.)

I'm flying into Orlando in a few weeks with my kids for vacation. We're staying in Cocoa Beach for a few days, and we're planning to do a Kennedy Space Center tour. I've also got a bioluminescence tour scheduled. After Cocoa Beach, we're heading down to Miami. I'm thinking of doing a Biscayne NP boat tour that includes some snorkeling. I want to do a day trip down to Key West mostly just for a photo-op at the southernmost point marker. Reading the Jupiter/Delray suggestions, do y'all have any other kid friendly (13 and 9) suggestions in the area?
uuuuuhhh That's a long drive just to see a frankly disappointing ship buoy. It's gonna be 3hrs down from Miami and 3 back *IF* you're lucky.
If you want to snorkel with the kiddos John Pennekamp is right there in Key Largo. ~45mins from Miami. (or Looe Key if you're going down to KW)
If you go down, stop at:
- Robert is Here fruit stand in (near) Homestead (fruit milkshakes)
- Robbie's so the kids can see/feed the Tarpon mm 77.5 gulfside
- On Big Pine drive to No Name Pub. (easy to find- thanks internet) Touristy but out of the way and you WILL see Key Deer. If you eat there have a Royal
Everything in the keys is touristy and expensive. The best way to experience the Keys is out on a boat. If you're not going out on a boat, I'd say skip it.

Well Gamecock football would finish anyone off. I wonder if he lived to see that screw job the refs put on them last year. That may have done it.

Not enough jail time for these fuck wits.
A Scottish mother-of-two involved in a global monkey torture network has been jailed for more than two years.
Natalie Herron, 39, from Airdrie in North Lanarkshire, joined online chat groups which encouraged torture of macaques by offenders based in Indonesia.
Airdrie Sheriff Court heard how she became a group administrator for the network, which was exposed by a BBC investigation, and shared hundreds of images and videos of the abuse.
The group paid for baby long-tailed macaques to be taken from their mothers in Indonesia before they were tortured and killed.
WARNING: This article contains distressing details of animal torture.
The acts of cruelty included crucifixion, machete attacks and one video that showed a baby monkey being dipped in boiling oil.
The court heard how Herron had made contact online with Michael Macartney, the US-based ringleader of the network who used the alias "The Torture King".
This is the first time someone has been sentenced in Scotland for cruelty that took place abroad.
Investigators from the National Crime Agency alerted Police Scotland and a raid on Herron's home in 2022 discovered an iPhone with 1,084 images and videos of monkey torture.
Investigators discovered 4,000 messages on a WhatsApp group which had been sent by Herron discussing torture and hatred of the animals.
Messages included one that said: "I am shocked how easily the drill went through the skull, it was like butter."
Another message read: "Trying to find a video where they will kill the mum and the babies watch."
Herron was sentenced to two years and three months in prison.
She had earlier admitted two charges of possessing and distributing obscene material, namely videos depicting animal torture, between October 2021 and September 2022 at her home address.
She admitted a further charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear or alarm by sending messages to various online and social media groups which described and promoted animal torture.
The court was told she made payments to Macartney but she claimed it was not for the videos but to "help him".
Joel Gunter/BBC
Members of the online group, who claimed they were angered at the monkeys destroying land in Indonesia, voted on proposed methods of torture.
Nicky Matteo, defending, said: "In all the years I have been practising I have not seen a case like this. It has not been a pleasant experience.
"She [Herron] has had horrific problems in life and she built up a connection with other group members.
"She was trying to ingratiate herself with other members, it was a false sense of escapism.
"She is no longer the person that was responsible for sending those messages. She recognises the severity of it."
Sentencing Herron, Sheriff Derek Livingston said: "The fact you not only joined these groups but then helped to facilitate them only helped to increase the animals' suffering."
The BBC investigation uncovered the network that began life on YouTube before it moved to private groups on the messaging app Telegram.
Macartney, 51, was jailed last year after pleading guilty in the US state of Virginia to conspiracy to create and distribute animal cruelty videos.
He was sentenced to three years and four months in jail.
A month later, Adriana Orme, 56, from Upton-upon-Severn, and Holly Le Gresley, 37, from Kidderminster, were jailed after admitting being part of the global network.
'Immense suffering'
Police Scotland officers said it was one of the most horrific cases they had dealt with and the material was like nothing they had seen before.
Det Sgt Karen Murray said: "This was a long and complex investigation which involved a number of organisations including the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) and was the first of its kind in the UK.
"Thanks to the work of these organisations, Herron will now face the consequences of her actions which contributed to the cruel torture and immense suffering of a number of innocent animals."
She added: "This was one of the most disturbing and graphic cases we have worked on and we hope this sentence shows that even though the cruelty took place abroad, that these types of crimes will not be tolerated and we will use all the tools at our disposal to hold people accountable."
Det Insp Mark Harrison, from the National Wildlife Crime Unit, said: "This investigation is truly shocking and unsettling.
"The people involved are not just motivated by money, this is also about getting some sort of gratification from watching animals being tortured and then sharing those images with others."
Procurator fiscal Faye Cook said: "The videos and images that Natalie Herron bought and shared online are horrendous.
"These animals were shown to be suffering extreme pain. This has been a distressing case for the prosecution team and police, but we have held Natalie Herron accountable.
"Individuals involved in the distribution of graphic and obscene online content depicting violent torture should be forewarned that this behaviour is not only repellent, but is against the law and will be prosecuted."
Anyone who has any concerns around such behaviour is asked to contact Police Scotland.

Drive-By Truckers and The Hold Steady were at the peak of their powers in the early to mid aughts.
Nothing but pummeling riffs and tales of miscreant behavior. None of the passivity bullshit that absolutely existed in that era (and I say that as someone who graduated HS in 2003 and was already annoyed with it then).
I just saw DBT touring on Southern Rock Opera. They put on a hell of a show. I was waiting for this song, didn't disappoint.
