Los Coast is good.  I ran into one of the guys I speak to regularly at Hopdoddy and he said he volunteered to get his platinum badge.  I may go for it next year, simply as I would probably enjoy the work part as much as the badge.  My wife does NOT want to iron man my way though bands, and I would likely us the badge more for the late night shows at places I already go to.  Or old like me, with the flexibility to do this sort of shit.  I ran into some gals at Eldorado a while back that basically organized the Kerrville folk festival.  Not my cup of tea really, but they said they would hire me to bartend and that I could get certified online in a couple hours for like $10.  Haven't bartended for 35 years, but I thought I do have a travel trailer and maybe a week in Kerrville might be fun?

Heck honestly my wife might like a break from going to SXSW, as she gets wiped out in two days.  So school me on this Volunteer thing?

So looks like a lot more hours if you do film than music? 40-56 hours vs 24-32 on the music side?  What badges did you guys get and I assume you do not get the badge until you complete the work hours?  Or they can simply deactivate it if you fail to fulfill your commitment?

Anyhow just wondering how much time and what badges you guys got?  I assume this link is fairly accurate SXSW volunteer rules

I got the Interactive Badge which required 40 hours. I believe the Film and Music badges are same or less, but the Platinum is 56.

I was a late addition to the volunteer sign up, a week before, but it usually opens up mid-January. One thing I learned, is you don't have to work all 40 hours in a row, you can break it up, which I wish I had done, just because by Wednesday, many of the good session I wanted to attend (Marketing and Sports) are done. So you can work 2 day, use it 2 days, and work another 2 days to complete it, just as long as you complete the required time.

I did try and maximize my badge and on days I worked (10 hours shifts for sessions). I went to happy hours or music showcases afterward. Didn't get any film in.

If you are scheduled for a day and are a no-show, they will de-activate your badge. Had a girl show up who did that, showed up a day late, but they re-activated it. I think if you don't complete the required time, you also are on the naughty list and you don't get invited back, but didn't ask any of the crew managers about that.

Hope this helps. I enjoyed it and will try and do it again next year. Maybe I see you out there then.

I volunteered for the first time myself, and the entire experience was great. Got lucky enough for a friend to match me up with a VR production company out of South Africa directly. They had us work 18 hours total for a platinum badge. The entire XR portion was pretty cool over at the Fairmont. Got to see a few booths and try something new.

I should have been doing this during my 20s, but mustered up enough energy for a couple SX Comedy shows early in the week, and 4 nights of music discovery. Just relying on the app to learn about who was playing when, and rolling the dice on what sounded cool, and I found a few bands to add to the playlists. Really enjoyed it this year and hope I get lucky enough to do it again next year.

I worked the Fairmont on Sunday. It was all Gaming and XR. Yeah, really cool stuff and I hope to manage my time better next year, now that I got the lay of the land. 18 hours is nothing. I worked 40 hours for an Interactive badge. Platinum required something like 60 hours! Like you, I hope I can do it again next year.

  3. I worked SXSW last week as a volunteer for the sessions. It was my first time to volunteer and other than attending some SXSW events, really the first time I got to attend the conference. If you volunteer a certain amount of hours, you basically work for the badge you want (Music, Film, Platinum, and Interactive). I did it partly because I'm in a job search and thought it would help to network a little and also get some professional development.

Wow. I was impressed with the topics, speakers, and panelists. There's a lot of depth to what they offer, not just music, film and technology. As a marketer, there were several sessions, even healthcare, real estate, entrepreneurship, etc. The happy hours were good and met some really cool people doing some interesting work. We are in the dawn of AI. Will be interesting to see how that unfolds and is managed in the coming years. The XR exhibits were pretty cool, too. The world is moving fast

Highlights were keynotes with Michael Dell and The Black Keys musical journey. I did listen to the cast of "Civil War." I haven't seen the Black Keys doc or "Civil War," but have it on my list. I actually didn't go to any movies, because I was more interested in the music showcases.

I worked Ballroom A at the ACC on on Wednesday, it flipped from speaker sessions to Radio Day Stage. Wednesday featured all Latin artists who were all really good. They included:

    • Marcelo D2-Brazilian rapper from the 90's Supposedly huge back there. I talked to his manager and he said it was weird to see him perform in from of 250 people. Back in Brazil he performs in from of 50,000 people.
    • Pink Pablo-Good singer from Puerto Rico.
    • J Noa-Dominica Republic rapper. She brings it.
    • Marem Ladson- Beautiful singer from Spain. Just her, a guitar and a silk voice.
    • Angelica Garcia-Half Mexican-Half Salvadoran. Great voice and a performance artist on stage. Apparently Obama put her on one of his song lists.
    • Papisa-A Brazilian band. They were good.

Pink Pablo band mates told me to go to the ACL live show they were playing that night. PP and J Noa were on the list that featured Peso Pluma. I went. Good shows again, but didn't stay for Pluma.

I also saw The Black Keys at Stubbs on Friday. I'd been wanting to see them for a while and they kicked ass. All of the opening bands, I believe, were on Dan Auerbach's Easy Eyes Sounds label. Jon Muq, Britti, Hermanos Guitierrez and Shannon and the Clams. My favorite was Shannon and the Clams (they played SWSJ, too).

Still recovering, but yeah, it was a good week to be in Austin.

Good Time Charlie’s is my go-to for CFS in SA now.  Used to be Mama’s Hoffbrau.  Josephine St. has a pretty good one iirc.

My go to CFS has been Tip Top Cafe. I think on Tuesday's they have a CFS special. That place is old school from scratch cooking and so good, but it's been a while.

You can't go wrong with Good Time Charlie's or Josephine St., either.

  5. I saw it yesterday and really, really enjoyed it. The movie was really well done, some of those shots were breathtaking. The fight scenes were great and the the special effects didn't get in the way of that or the story.

I liked that they broke it up in two movies, but part 2 still packed a lot it. I did think they shorted the story line with Alia and Thufir Hawat was a no show in part 2. In the movie she's unborn. In the book, she's born. Her and Hawat play pivotal roles in the ending.

Even with the edited story, it's still good. I liked it so much, may go see it again in the next couple of weeks.

  6. I saw Styx last night at the SA Rodeo. I'd never seen them before, so as an 80's kid, this was cool to check off my list. They put on a really good show and they sounded great for their age. I know Dennis DeYoung and the rest of the band had a riff and parted, but the guy who replaced him was a good 1B DeYoung. Played just about all the hits i liked, except "The Best of Times."

They did get in Mr. Roboto. Guys could see the future in 1983!

How did Rust Cohle's Lone Stars make it to Tsalal?

Man, as a loyal drinker that was the first thing that jumped out at me.  It's like Big Red, you can't get it past the Texas border much less Alaska. Is it a homage to Rust or a clue?

I mean absolutely Orgeron should be the 1st call.

    1) History with Sarkisian

    2) Recruiting, especially in Louisiana

    3) Good coach

    4) Ultimate fuck you to LSU

    5) Joy it will bring to this board.

I understand the connections and past with Sark and Coach O, but...I'm just seeing an out of control, shirtless Coach O roaming 6th street and Zilker park looking for a good time.

We fired our guns but the British kept a coming.

There wasn't quite as many as there was a while ago.

We fired once more and they began a running,

On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

My dad had this record and I played it over and over as a kid. Years later, I'm on a business trip to Nashville and walking through downtown, may have been Broadway, when I heard the live version of the song. Walked in the bar and did a double take on the singer. Looked at the bartender and she nodded her head in confirmation. There was Jerry Springer belting out "The Battle of New Orleans." Song has never been the same to me since.

I think most everybody is familiar with Bernie, if for this scene alone:

Really good movie. One of my best friends is a gaffer and worked on this movie. He really liked it and thought Jack Black was awesome to work with. He even had his parents cameo in this movie and ironically, they're in a booth in this scene (no, not those dudes there).

Ironically, it's in MGM....across from the sportsbook.  I've caught a few games there; it does get busy.  Don't know if it has changed, but both times I have gone they were fine with us sitting at a table for the entireity of a game, just drinking and grazing:

Yep. Good bar. It's one of my stops in LV. Last time I was there i stayed at the MGM and ate there on a Friday night. The UT Basketball team was eating there, too. I believe they were in town to play Stanford on Sunday. Took a pic with Chris Beard. The photog was RT. I was damn excited about UT BB and where it was headed. Welp...

  12. My brother and I were big wrastlin fans in late 70's and 80's. The line of characters rolling through the Sportatoruim were like a carny crew. Von Erich vs Free Birds...classic backyard brawls. I called my brother an "Egg Sucking Dog" for two years because of the influence of Terry Gordy. I'm in.

The soundtrack is awesome, too. I'm a huge Rush fan. Tom Sawyer and wraslin...my hair is on fire!

Jeebus. I though she must be in her late seventies. Her voice is still great but she looked pretty rough.

Yep. Two different attitudes as well.

Tanya can still sing. Then she sat on her stool, bitched about her alignments and then told everyone to get off her lawn.

Shania can still sing and dance. Then she was cat crawling on her motorcycle and was like, "Let's Ride!"

Doesn’t look like Walkmen are on Hulu today, sadly.

Wife and I watched Michigander and now finishing Dope Lemon. Wife knew of former, neither of us the latter. Dumb name but Dope Lemon was pretty good. We liked that one.

Saw Dope Lemon and liked them. Some of the new artist...meh, all sizzle, no steak. Yeah Yeah Yeahs were awesome. Pretty cool for Mumford and Sons to play with Austin High band.

I was all in yesterday on Tanya Tucker, Alanis Morissette, Shania Twain and the Foo Fighters. Tanya is still a honky tonk queen. Alanis is still mad. Surprise was Shania joining the Foo for a song. Pretty cool. I'm old.

The Walkmen show was fantastic. If they’re coming to your town, go see them. They’re at Stubb’s tomorrow and ACL on Sunday.

I'll have to check them out today. I'm doing ACL via Hulu and I think they're on one of the 2 channels. Dave Grohl gave them, Death Grip and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs a recommendation from the state last night.

That Hatton kid was a starter on varsity as a freshman at Brandeis HS last year. If HS transfer portal was a thing the broncos got totally pillaged this past offseason.

Yep. They also had QB JC Evans who showed lots of potential his soph year, but junior year was flat. He has the physical skills but the numbers weren't there.

WR Jaden Perez is legit and still there. He will get some good D1 offers.

That team could have have had some serious firepower.

Man, I saw PJ, Soundgarden, Swervedriver and Monster Magnet in Austin at the Coliseum back in like 92. Top to bottom it was a great show. I haven't seen them since, but have wanted to. I don't remember Eddie sitting on a stool though in 92.

First time reading through this thread and it’s been sobering/depressing.  Next to relationships ending, job hunting is my least favorite life experience.

The last time I changed jobs 5 years ago, I made a move I thought would set me up for a good decade or more, moving into what I thought was a role that would give me extreme marketability (at least until AI replaces me 10-15 years from now).  As someone who has been a pretty good saver, I figured this might be my last job until early retirement.

I have a job that most people would kill for.  I’m fully remote, I have tons of control over my schedule, I don’t have any direct reports to deal with, my boss trusts me, and I make $150k+/yr with just a bachelor’s degree.  For the first 3 years, this current gig was the first real job I’ve ever had that I could legit say I really liked and felt lucky to have.

But the last year and especially the last couple of months, I have been feeling burned out.  I think some of that is just my own personality, as it seems like I’ve gone thru a stage like this at every stop once I hit the 3-4 year mark.  Some of it is that I’ve gotten some really crummy clients in the last year that have been difficult to deal with and made the role more stressful and less fun.  But some of it I think is that I don’t have much more room to grow in this company and feel like I’ve maxed out here, and that I would be stupid to not have my resume updated and feelers out.  My job seems very secure but I’m in a sector that appears to be facing headwinds and I’m seeing plenty of folks in my role at other companies get laid off.

Reading this thread has me terrified that I’d be totally fucked if I got laid off.  My calling cards are that I’m very good with clients, I’m usually one of the most well-liked people at every job I’ve worked at, and I’m sharp enough to generally pick up whatever is asked of me pretty quickly; but I’m mid-40s and I am a highly paid individual contributor with limited technical expertise.  Reading this thread makes me feel like I’d be looking at a big pay cut if I have to make move.

So all that tldr is that I am feeling burned out after 5 years but am worried that my age has already started working against me and my skills aren’t in high demand despite an extremely low unemployment rate.  Is it stupid to just accept that without actually going through the motions of seeing what else it out there?  When does it make sense to update the old resume and start the absolute grind of looking for a new gig?

It's football season and I'll use a Sark quote: Be where your feet are.

I'm in my 50's and left my job voluntarily  in 2021. New CEO was bringing his people in, I had philosophical differences with his approach and after 16 years there, I put my letter in. Took some time off, traveled, came back and thought I wouldn't have a problem finding a job. Have my MBA, long consistent work history, hit my numbers, good annual reviews, etc. It's now almost 2 years and still haven't landed a job. Lots of interviews...no offers. It's tough out there for the old goats.

Yeah, some days really suck, even when you have a good job. I get it. But you have a job...(see quote).

Now, if what you're feeling is that you need something new, then start the search now. Life is short and you don't want to be at home, refreshing your email or staring at your phone waiting for a call. Trust me on that.

I always told my staff you can make 3 choices: 1) the right choice, 2) the wrong choice and 3) no choice. The right choice is the best, the wrong choice is the second best (at least you learn or gain experience from it), and the worst choice is no choice. You gain nothing from it.

    Point: keep moving forward.

99.99% of the concerts I've been to have terrible open acts. I wonder if  bands do that on purpose to not have any chance of being upstage.

The only one I've attended in person that falls in this category is the Monsters of Rock in 88 or 89. Five bands on the bill, with Van Halen being he headliner, and the scorpions the number two band.

Metallica was just blowing up and brought an attitude and volume that blew the stadium away.  The scorpions seem so tame and old by comparison.   Van Halen acted like big man on campus, but I think they knew as well that Metallica won the day.

I was at this show at Rice stadium. My brother bought tickets for my birthday, and having seen all the bands except Metallica, I was amped. Their sound and energy level was on 11. Everyone else was, meh. I've seen them about 8 times since then. Great shows, but that show was next level.

  20. Finally saw It. Damn fun film. Xolo and George were both Chingon. Great cast all around. The story outshined the superhero effects. Even paid homage to El Chapulin Colorado. Blue Beetle por vida. Or at least one more movie with Bruna Marquezine.
