99.99% of the concerts I've been to have terrible open acts. I wonder if  bands do that on purpose to not have any chance of being upstage.

The only one I've attended in person that falls in this category is the Monsters of Rock in 88 or 89. Five bands on the bill, with Van Halen being he headliner, and the scorpions the number two band.

Metallica was just blowing up and brought an attitude and volume that blew the stadium away.  The scorpions seem so tame and old by comparison.   Van Halen acted like big man on campus, but I think they knew as well that Metallica won the day.

I was at this show at Rice stadium. My brother bought tickets for my birthday, and having seen all the bands except Metallica, I was amped. Their sound and energy level was on 11. Everyone else was, meh. I've seen them about 8 times since then. Great shows, but that show was next level.

  2. Finally saw It. Damn fun film. Xolo and George were both Chingon. Great cast all around. The story outshined the superhero effects. Even paid homage to El Chapulin Colorado. Blue Beetle por vida. Or at least one more movie with Bruna Marquezine.

  3. I haven't seen it yet, but certainly planning on it. I met Xolo a couple of weeks ago in San Antonio and the kid has a great personality and perspective for his age. I'm rooting for him.

I grew up reading about Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne and Luke Skywalker. I loved those characters, but I never really had a Jaime Reyes as a superhero to root for. This generation will and I'm super pumped about that. Vamos Blue Beetle!

Just booked my flight for next Wednesday.  Playing in WSOP tag-team event with my dad.  Staying at Paris but will most likely be heading elsewhere for non-poker gambling.  Where are the best places to play BJ not on the strip?

I saw the Ellis Island post. I've not played there, but my go to is El Cortez downtown. Old school place with a fresh haircut. Lots of history there. 3/2 payout with $5 min as well.

Last fall an old work buddy talked me into going to one of the Mariners-Astros playoff games in Houston. He flew down from the PNW and after driving back to Austin on Friday, I convinced him to stay the weekend so we could tailgate and then catch the Iowa St football game. More than few braincells were knocked off plus plenty of laughs recalling the last 20+ years.  I'm not a big Tequila/Mezcal guy but we had so much fun that weekend (plus he stayed in our pool house) that for some reason he felt compelled to buy me a bottle of this. It tastes damn good to me but it is nowhere near inexpensive. Thoughts?

That's Jorge Derecho's tequila. It looks like you got the top shelf bottle. Either the tequila or his songs will make you throw a a grito. Good combo.

Thanks for the tips. Did you buy your tickets online? Show is on Saturday. Still no tickets emailed to me.

One of my old buddies from UT (Brack-Roberts) got the tix. He bought them online. He was worried too, and didn't get them until 2 or 3 days before the show. I think they do that to prevent $$$ resale.

Damn, had no idea Femmes were in town. Would have like to have gone to that.

Seeing Spoon this weekend at Whitewater in New Braunfels. Anyone gone to a show here before? It's less than a week out and I still haven't been emailed tickets... Have the receipt/order confirmation, but no ticket. Bought via TicketWeb.

Been to Whitewater to see Young the Giant, Leon Bridges and most recently ZZ Top and Willie Nelson. I like the venue, mostly because of the location on the river and I'm from NB, so it's like home. Good sight lines and easy to move around in there. Right on the river so at night you get a cool breeze.

I don't like the traffic. It can be a shit show if you're coming in from 306, and some areas can get down to 2-lanes. Not built to handle massive traffic. I highly recommend getting there early to avoid sitting in traffic. The line to get in the venue for ZZ Top was long as shit too and wrapped around the parking lot. Probably due to not enough workers.  May take a while to get out as well, so take a survival pack. In case of emergency, pop a top.

god i'm so sick of hearing the word unicorn in basketball.  Was it Bill Simmons that started this shit?

The only Unicorns that exist are from New Braunfels. I should know. I'm one of them.

No one’s Fiesta-ing this week? I went to market square last year for it. Surprisingly didn’t completely hate it. Probably won’t go this year though, can’t imagine going more than once as it seems like it’s the same thing every year.

I'm a big Fiesta guy. My buds and I are always all in every year. Went to the kick-off on Thursday before the storms put out the fires. I'll be working a beer booth at NIOSA tonight. That's always fun. Free beer and deer stand view of all the crazies. Market square is a must for me, under the bridge of course. Great food there, too.

Might do King William again, that's always a fun and cool day scene, and a stop at San Fernando. Pick up a beer and confess my sins at the same time. Viva Fiesta!

  10. I went to see ZZ Top and Willie Nelson at Whitewater Amphitheater on Saturday. It was a really good show, and an epic bill with two Texas legends.

Billy Gibbons voice and guitar sound is so iconic. Still sound the same. I saw them in 1983 and that voice is great flashback to my teen years.

Willie Nelson will be 90 years old on April 29th. I don't know how many more shows he still has in him, but he put on a hell of a performance all things considered. Trigger did not disappoint either.  Billy Gibbons joined Willie at the end of the set, too, for "I'll Fly Away." Pretty, pretty cool.

I like Whitewater to see a show, but may be bias because I grew up in NB. It's in my old back yard and I like coming back home. But the traffic, parking and gate entrance just drive me up the wall. It's terrible.

  11. Watching Jordan play is so high and low. Yeah, 5 birdies on the front 9. Goes swimming 2x on the back 9.

One hole he's playing like the greatest golfer in the world. Next hole he's playing like me (yep, I hit a guy in the leg, too. He was walking his dog on the course).

    Jordan, don't play like me.

  12. I really love when we play AF. My dad retired from the Air Force, so grew up a military brat. My brother and I were both born at Bergstrom AFB. We have have that blue blood running through our veins. I root for them as much as I can. Air Force-Fly, fight, and win.

We both went to UT too, so we have Burnt Orange sangre as well. Hook'em Horns.

    AF. UT. Respect. Always.

  13. Got my tix to see Mana tomorrow at the AT&T center in SA. One of my top 5 bands. They always put on a great show. They stage show effects are good. The smoke show of all the hot mamacitas in the halls is way better.

New Order in San Antonio was a great show. A couple changes to the set list from Dallas - I would have preferred 1963 over Tutti Frutti. They closed with an encore of three Joy Division songs.

When did all of these old people start liking New Order? I don't remember old people clubbing at the Lizard Lounge in 1989.

Fantastic, fun and nostalgic show. Happy they added "Regret" to the set list. Sad I didn't get to hear "Love Vigilantes." Yes, they ended like they began, Joy Division.

I'm Gen X but damn, lots of old and wobbly at the show. I was in section 201 and handipcap section was full. It's like they pre-partied at Luby's and then showed out.

Recommendations on parking for AT&T center in San Antonio?  I can prepay $20 for one of the lots.  There's a private lot to the south, but cost is unknown.  Uber from hotel 8 miles away.  Uber is easiest, but I'm always worried about the fair being $100 or so.

Maybe @DToro can pick us up on his way to the concert.

My truck is in the shop. Fuel pump part recall, so hitching a ride with my budding who got a pass or else I'd let you ride in the bed of the truck. Just kidding. AT&T parking is a scam. Uber or VIA, VIA is a recommendation.  Willow Springs may have limited parking for cheap, too. We're either going to pre-party in South Town or Smoke downtown.

There's a DJ. I think he started around 8-ish. Doors opened at 6:30. New Order came on at 9:10 or so.

Thanks. I saw this setlist for DFW. It's changed a bit from city to city, but other than "Regret"  and "The Beach" not being on there, it's a good hit list for me.

Cool. I'm going to see them tomorrow in SA. First time, so excited. Was there an opening act? If not, how long did they play?

Just saw the prices for Depeche Mode at the Moody Center in September.  GTFO.  Ridiculous.  I saw them in 1988 with OMD and 1990 with Nitzer Ebb.  Today's Depeche Mode is not that Depeche Mode.  Call me when prices tank.

I was at that DM/OMD show in 1988. My freshman year at UT. Good show. Going to New Order in SA. Buddy got $60 tickets, upper level, which I'm fine with. I'm not rushing the stage these days. Thought about seeing DM again, but was afraid to click to see the prices.

  19. I'm very sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is different and very difficult. At least it was for me. I was at my father's gravesite last week at Ft Sam Houston. 17 years have gone by and it's still hard, but as the late Queen said: "Grief is the price we pay for love."

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the soul of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Woohoo!  Got my 100 rejection today!

At this point it's just comical.

I've been catching up on this tread this afternoon. Been on this board a long time as a lurker, but only have a handful of posts. Anyway, I am in a similar situation. I was part of the great resignation, so after 16 years in marketing financial services, I left last year. New CEO was brining in his own people and the writing was on the wall.

I have a pretty good work history and never been fired, hit my goals, team player, etc, so I didn't think I would be out of work a long time. I did take some time off and traveled a bit, but then hit the ground running January of last year to find my next adventure. I'm still looking.

I sympathize with Macanudo and others going through this because it's tough. Some days it's a kick in the nuts. Went through a six month interview process to finally hear no. Thought I matched up well for the job, too, which is why I pushed off some other interested companies.

I've had several interviews, final panels, but no offer...yet. It's coming I know, but frustration can run high and the process can be very slow. Hang in there. You'll soon forget all the rejections and you'll celebrating a Yes offer soon.
