  1. He's good, I've recorded him.  Nice guy, too.

Kevin’s also played a bit with Robb Kidd but maybe not for full-on Soulhat stuff. I played a show at SXSW where Kevin did a late night indoor set with Robb and they played 5 or 6 SH covers, including closing with Bone Crusher. It ripped.

  2. Look, they don't mean to screw you, they're really good people but... reasons, excuses, and voila, the miracle was late so you get to hold the bag.
"Sorry, I'll see you at megachurch on Sunday. I'll be wearing expensive clothes and my conscience will be unburdened."

Hey, Buddy. We’re Christians and we don’t like what you said?

    Yeah, then forgive me.

  3. Dipshits on local radio were talking about Frampton as a "one hit wonder" yesterday.  I can think of at least five.

Though not a “hit” I always loved Penny for Your Thoughts. And I’m convinced it was the progenitor of the Crowes’ Sunday Night Buttermilk Waltz which is just a dadgum jam if I’ve ever heard one.

  4. I saw him at MSG in February and it was a blast (and definitely a dress rehearsal for this performance). But this CBS show is ten times more dynamic - lights, crowd, guests. I love Billy - going to his shows at MSG are less like going to see a band I can’t wait to see and more like seeing a killer Broadway show. Glad I got to see one of his last “residency” shows.

  5. I’m in Westport CT and felt it. At first sounded like it was a strong breeze but I noticed the trees totally calm….. then a little shaking which I heard more than felt (pictures, windows rattling). My wife was in her office and didn’t notice it. Dogs freaked the fuck out.

  6. I'm a lifelong Steely Dan fan and now enjoying getting my 6 yo son into it.  He can't get enough (unless it's to play some Tom Petty).  I agree with many that everything up to and including Aja ruled then they started to diminish; but I actually like Gaucho a lot.  The only SD songs I don't like are Haitian Divorce and East St. Louis Toodle-Oo.  I also, frankly, don't love Do It Again.

I finally got to see them a couple years ago and, man, I regret not seeing them when Becker was alive.  Still put on a fantastic show.  And while he's not quite Steve Gadd, Keith Carlock live is an absolute killer drummer.

  7. Spoiler

Wait, just so I’m clear… at the end did Nagakado go solo to the willow world to kill Saeki of his own volition…. Failed and then just slipped and died? Or was he killed? Was Kiku in on it?

  8. Did Dame Saturday but I didn’t take pics. It was fucking great.

We Thw Notebook, Suffs, Lempicka and Appropriate.

Appeopriate is amazing. Suffs is very good. Lemoicka is fantastic vocals with a weak book. And I fucking HATED Notebook.

Did the theaters ask you to turn off your cell phone AND your auto-correct?
  9. Probably the vuvuzela (mentioned twice above).

But I also cannot stand the Fender Rhodes electric piano, particularly in a rock band in a bar and played out of tune to the rest of the band.  That's truly one of the worst sounding experiences ever.

As with many things in this thread, in the right hands is a critical consideration. The Rhodes keys can be iconic. I think you’re attributing the blame to the instrument when it should be to the musician.

As a guitarist (always wanting to be a rhythm section guy), I love this topic.

I do love the studio drummers:   Keltner, Jim Gordon, Blaine, Porcaro, Aronoff, Jackson, Kunkel, Dunbar, etc.....

Now my favorites... of course Peart, Copeland, Bruford, & Bonham are just in my favorite bands.   Below are just a few videos that I just love from a drumming standpoint.

    Larnell Lewis - Snarky Puppy

    Always loved Kenny Jones...

But, Buddy Rich probably takes it.

Kunkel raises a whole other class of studio drummer. Just solid and full proof. Aronoff, Weckl…. Legends of a different kind. Good call.  And a final thought…. Buddy Rich changed the whole game WAY pre-rock and roll and was a masterful player of rudiments, but he topped out a by-gone era versus ushering in a new one.  He was the ultimate show-off without a lot to show for it in his time…. But he showed a lotta kids at the time that their time was coming. Enter Bonham, Moon, Bissonette, Weckl, etc.

Being a metronome is not a bad thing. Bands tend to speed up during songs and if a drummer can have them end at the same tempo that they started with, I would say that is a good drummer. Friend of mine used to say "Swallowed a clock". Charlie Watts was not a flashy drummer, but he kept the rest of the band on the same tempo. In some ways he "made" the Rolling Stones. Ringo, too. I like Frank Beard a lot. Some unique riffs that are integral to the song, more than just a straight ahead 4/4.

Watts was another guy whose heart was in jazz. You hear it even more in later albums. Honky Tonk Women was a great example of tempo adjusting to feel. Mushy funk to R&B with a country/soul feel and back again.

And while I’m at the ol’ typewriter, a note on Phil Collins. Although it’s no longer considered witty or a provocation to talk about how great a drummer he was - and I say was because he was literally crippled because of his drumming setup - I advocate that he was one of the more significantly impactful artists of modern pop and rock music. Unbelievable as a singer, genre bending as a writer (or co-writer), and a drummer that helped smooth the transition between prog rock to prog pop to MTV pop.  I’d put him up there with Prince in terms of influence on overall importance during their active decades.
