  1. Anecdotal, but I know two people from Texas that went to Oregon for college on what felt like to me, a lark. It sounds like it’s pretty breathtaking up there in terms of the natural beauty and they both said how “different” it feels up there. Combine that with how strong Oregons brand is and they just seem to have a great pitch for young people that are really looking for a change of scenery.

Both came back to finish college in Texas. One after a year, the other after two. I’m not saying anything one way or another about Bowens because I couldn’t know less about him or his situation. I do wonder though how many players need to leave their region to go experience something they’re looking for, and once they’ve scratched that itch, want to come home and actually get to work.

So the boy's T-ball team is 7 games through a 12 game season, and the head coach has only been there for the first 2. Always out of town or some other excuse (and he won't be there tomorrow either, which makes 6 out of 8 that he's gone). Me and the other asst coach have run the show pretty much the whole season. I know it's T-ball and it's not that big of a deal, but why the fuck would you sign up to be a coach if you're gonna just be awol for most of the season? I would've gladly volunteered to be the head coach except for the fact that I knew the possibility was there that I may miss some games due to work obligations. Most of our games we play where the other team has like 5 or 6 coaches and parents out there helping, and our games it's just me and this other asst coaching while his wife wrangles the boys in the dugout.

Anyways... rant over. Just shaking my head at this shit. Happened to me with one of his soccer teams last year as well.

That's really poor form. And yea there needs to be lots of parents out there helping. Are y'all on an email list? I'd just politely ask for more help. Like Kent Murphy says- "You ain't doin right by these kids!"

Having coached three sons from tee-ball through 13U travel with a number of good All-Star runs, I will advise you to enjoy it as much as possible.

We are having a great season. Im coaching my 5 year olds coach pitch team and having a blast. The kids are always so fired up. So fun.

My first grader is playing midget out at SBSMA. He works his tail off. He's all in and cant get enough baseball, which was my only goal for him (to get the bug). He's batting .680 but most of his outs were in the first two games. They've moved him up to the first batter right after the second graders and he has a boat load of RBIs.

Curious to get y'all's thoughts. I got them a rope bat last week and I really think Ive seen a quick change in their swings. It's been tough to get them to get their hips through and now they're swinging hard and getting a full twist. Anyone else used it?

  4. I asked a former player who is still involved with the program what he thinks about the Pierce situation. He rattled off about a dozen talking points as if he had been waiting for someone to ask him. Most notable ones for me were that his players don't like him and his coaches really don't like him. He said everyone knew the score once Williams and Tulo were gone. This guy said he didn't know anything about plans to make a change but that he wouldn't be surprised just because so many people around the program dislike him.

I waited to respond to these posts because I've posted about Stanley's plenty before (I live in Tyler and eat there with some frequency).  I also was taken aback by your take (and Greenspoint's) on the ribs versus the brisket since I abandoned the ribs a couple of years ago for their consistent mushiness and have found the brisket to be greatly improved over the last five years.  So I hit it up for lunch today,   I got there at about 11:45 a.m. and only had a few people in front of me (it's a bit rainy, which helped).  I got half-a-pound of brisket off the point and 3 baby backs (they threw in the fourth for free).  Side of potato salad because I like their potato salad.

    Here's my 2024 take:

Holy shit, they fixed the ribs!  The "best baby backs" description may be pretty apt.  Tender, fantastic flavor, and just a bit crispy on the outside.  I'm glad they changed whatever was causing that mush (I suspected long holding periods).  Or maybe lunch is the time to order them.  Either way, great show!

The brisket was very good---super tender with a nice bark.  It was a little more salt-present today versus the 70/30 pepper forward briskets you get elsewhere or compared to what I remember its flavor being from previous visits.  I don't mind that though, and it wasn't overly salty for my taste.  Overall, it was very flavorful  and  melted in my mouth, moreso even than the brisket I had last week at Terry Blacks.  So I'd push back on the "mediocre" sentiment on that one.  I've had their lean brisket plenty of times as well, and it's quite good too.  But if it's just me, I order from the point and am consistently happy with what I get.

As for the sausage: Since I moved away from their ribs, I've had it plenty.  It's not bad, but it's nothing special.  For a while, it was a German blend made for them by a local meat market.  I seem to recall they switched suppliers at some point and may have switched again recently.  But I could see it being received as mediocre.  It's fine, but not special.  They also have hot links because it's east Texas.  I've had them when they've sold out of sausage before but don't bother with them otherwise.

P.S.  Ah, the Clucker.  I've had plenty of them and highly recommend them.  Most of the time, I want brisket, ribs, and sausage though.  But if it's someone's only visit, I recommend getting one and some to-go boxes.

Glad the ribs popped for you too. They knocked my socks off. Just by your picture I can tell your brisket is far superior to what I was served. Probably just got some from a bad brisket.

people, STOP GOING TO STANLEYS AND NOT ORDERING THE MOTHERCLUCKER. YOU ARE MAKING A MISTAKE AND WILLINGLY NOT ORDERING THE BEST THING ON THE ENTIRE MENU.

I wanted to. I bet if I would've taken a gummy beforehand I would've made the call, but I was too curious about how they stacked up to the other spots I really like.

  7. Really happy with my 7yo's coaches. Good dudes who dont act like dipshits and are committed to helping these kids develop baseball skills. They've been getting my kid some time at 2nd where he doesnt quite belong yet and he's already made some big strides, really helped with his confidence. Hes transferring his weight nicely on his swing, just working on timing and staying back. Most importantly he has the baseball bug and he's got a great attitude. Feels good seeing him make a jump before the season has even started. I guess corching really does matter.

Houston is one of their biggest if not THE BIGGEST city out of state for their alumni.

I'm well aware. We have way more alumni here. Our program got alpha'd yesterday. They circled our game, showed up in droves, and stayed loud the whole time. Huge matchup against the defending champs in our backyard and we couldnt bother to show up. I dont feel like we should take a back seat to anybody. We've got the numbers, the resources, the history, everything. We clearly can't match the passion of a lot of the fan bases we are about to go against and I think it sucks. I bought season tickets for years when I lived in Austin, been to Omaha multiple times, throw in for baseball NIL. Baseball is the only sport of the Big 3 where we can claim very top tier status. I get LSU fans are nuts about baseball, thats great. Should've been 60/40 LSU to Texas. I really dont know what the splits was. 80/20 at best. Maybe I havent been paying attention. Are we just ceding the territory to them bc they have Marucci $$$?

  9. We got dog walked. Wasn't great but it is what it is because Holman is lights out and that very well may be the best team in the country.

What really bothered me is we were out numbered what felt like about 7 to 1. They outclassed us big time as a fan base and a program. This was in Houston Texas, and I could tell they reveled in having a home game atmosphere in our state. Pissed me off.
