Wonder how they will navigate this one with Toppin going through the combine. Deadline for NCAA players to return is May 29th.

This guy would be an amazing fit on our current roster. Watched him a lot last year and was impressed.

We play Oklahoma, Arkansas and A&M away from Austin. Those mother fuckers will all treat those as jihad games and make or break their season on the Texas game. There will be plenty of games to be worried about.

I am not saying those are the only games that I'm worried about, I'm saying those are the games where I think our potential weakness in the interior is an elevated level of concern.

you are worried about a Michigan team that is 128th in the country in returning production, and are 132/134 in returning offensive production who lost their QB, RB, OL, their top 2 WR, and a bunch of their coaches?

Michigan won games by grinding teams to dust with the conditioning, OL and Blake Corum. those guys are all gone, along with their head coach, S&C coach and DC.

Yes, I stand by what i said in context. That's the only game, aside from Georgia which is just concerning generally, where I'm particularly worried about our interior defensive line being exposed. They won the Joe Moore award two years running and had a terrific OL again last year. I'm not quite ready to say their OL will be weak next year, as they've reloaded each year recently, and Donovan Edwards is a very good back.

Glad we didn’t overpay for Williams. Not worried about DT. I think the DLine as a unit will be better this year vs last and we won’t notice the DT drop off people are worried about.

It only really gives me heartburn in the Michigan matchup, particularly since that's so early in the year. We've seen that team win games without passing the ball, but I'm hoping that's gone out the door with Harbaugh.

You'd think Toia -> USC and Damonic -> Texas would just make sense. I'd be happy with either of them.

Toia initially transferred to UCLA from USC and I think burned some bridges on the way out. I actually think he's a better player than Williams and has supposedly put a lot of work into his body this offseason. He was spectacular against the run last year and I suspect he could see a Sweat/Murphy type breakout this year.

SIAP, I haven't read any of the 2025+ recruiting notes yet.

Just heard on KTLA Los Angeles that the Mater Dei corch was let go or fired or something.
Would that have any effect on our "pipeline" there?

Supposedly, he was banging a player's mom. Like any self-respecting high school football coach.

Let's look at WR for this class, as it pertains to reasonable targets for Texas.

    Elite

Lockett - Elite components: 6'7" wing span, extra large hands, great high pointer. Situation: Texas leads.

Moore - Elite components: Track star speed. Most explosive WR out of his stance in this cycle nationally. Situation: A future state glimpse of recruitments between Texas and LSU. Both have a lot to sell. Both are putting WRs in the NFL this cycle in high rounds. The guy will have ex-teammates on both teams. NIL is a factor. LSU's NIL, irrespective of hagiographic shit being pumped out in a documentary, is limited. They simply cannot throw major NIL dollars at every spot. Do they say "fuck it" and sacrifice other targets at other positions in order to win here? Maybe. There are a lot of people who think this one flips. I could see either outcome right now.

Ffrench - Elite components: Route running. Optionality, can play all WR positions well. Excellent yet undercoached in typical state of Florida recruiting ways, leaving significant developmental upside. Situation: There are plenty of good reasons for this guy to go to any of the schools he's considering. OSU's record with WRs and the NFL is strong. FSU is about to put guys in the league this cycle too. Tennessee, sure. Miami is regionally relevant. NIL is likely a big deal here. No one between OSU, Tenn, or Texas can claim a legit advantage here in that regard.

High Quality Talent W/out an Elite Skill or Trait

Johnson - You could argue that this guy possesses elite speed with sub 11.00 100 times while also playing multiple sports. He's not ranked as an elite player because 1) he plays for a 3a school and most of his footage is just him catching the ball wide open and running away from everyone and 2) he has a very thin frame, akin to that of Worthy. Texas leads.

Harris - Average measurables for a WR. Plays for an elite football program that is a CFB prospect factory. Ceiling may be limited. Apparently has excellent hands and plays the position really well. Does not possess elite speed. Seems kind of obvious that Texas leads.

McCutcheon - Insane production numbers. Probably limited only to slot in college and allegedly is leaning towards OOS. Texas is hosting him for an OV, at least as of this time, but they have not pushed as a priority.

Marsh - Good size, lacks elite speed, apparently has excellent hands. He has a helicopter parent who is a legitimate distraction. The player has alleged attitude issues, but given his personal life without a dad and a mom likely heading to prison, maybe that's a nurture/environment thing. Apparently, ATM isn't really an interest for him. He's pushed for interest from Texas. OU likes him.

Choice - This dude has great height and uses it well. I don't know about his track times but he doesn't look like a blazer. Apparently, he's a heavy OU lean but has a UT visit scheduled.

    ----

I might be missing something, but that's the 8 targets I feel like we hear about the most.

Texas will take between 3-4, it seems. How does that mix shake out?

Irrespective of how the services are ranking him, Johnson looks like a staff priority. I think he is the most likely player to get the "we want you, but we need to know what you're going to do now before we are forced to make other choices if you're not on board" treatment here in the next few weeks/months. So I think they land him.

Lockett is a must get. He has visited Texas far more than any other school and they are doing everything they can to land him. I think they land him during his visit or shortly thereafter. Competition is more or less "the field" which is also good.

That leaves 1-2 other spots. I doubt they land both Moore and Ffrench. I think it is likelier that they don't land either of them. Nonetheless, let's assume Texas pushes a ton of chips in on Moore and the LSU offense this seasons is a shadow of its former self.

So who is your number 4? If it is Harris, great, that keeps SoCal's attention on the program and Sarkisian saves his biases.

I'd rather punt on #4 unless Ffrench pulls the trigger. I like McCutcheon but clearly that isn't the staff's opinion or they're just not getting much back from him. The portal will have a ton of options and there is no reason to believe that Texas, while putting more WRs into the pros and Arch Manning waiting in the wing, with Sarkisian's offense, won't be a premier landing spot for the best WRs in the portal, yet again.

    What's everyone else's mix?

With the way we've been recruiting the portal, I don't necessarily see it with Marcus Harris. Looks like a P5 player on tape and has proved it against high-level competition, but based on size/speed (neither of which is terrible by any means) he seems like a guy we'd ultimately recruit over. He actually reminds me of CJ Williams from a few years back at Mater Dei, albeit a little better - solid prospect but I don't see a real difference maker. Would be happy to have him if we miss on Ffrench and Moore and then would also be fine when he portals to Arizona two years later. I like McCutcheon more of the next tier guys.

  8. Burton seems to think Bear to Texas is likely if he enters the portal. I guess I'd rather have him on the roster than not, although with NIL allocation it's not zero sum anymore. My hope is that he correctly views this as a contract year and turns it up a notch accordingly. If we get Bear and a proven/reliable DT in Spring, we'll be in good shape considering the strength of other position groups on the defense.

  9. Was in Vegas with 7 buddies a couple months back, only a couple of us had ever played craps before, so little to no strategy in the group. We were at Resorts World and caught the biggest heater I've ever been a part of, just pure luck that would not end. Walked out of the casino at 7 a.m. with well over $10k collectively. My friend and I were wearing Texas polos and two old ass drunk Michigan fans joined our table around 3 a.m. and were screaming Texas Fight. Won those guys so much money that they gave both of us a $500 chip on their way out. It was a fever dream.

Well, since baseball seems like it may be a complete loss this year, I'm wading over into this mess way earlier than normal.  Anything good happening in the offseason?

Yes, Colin Simmons is currently playing close to Aaron Donald's weight but has retained his speed and bend. That's been a nice development.

Not sure I agree with this.

TCU,  KSU and that type of program have made a living developing players.

Not just that, but development on the fringes of recruiting classes is very important. Turning 3 star types like Murphy/Sweat, Chris Olave, Jordan Davis and Ladd McConkey into Day 1 guys can push a talented program over the edge. That said, the name of the game is still stacking your team with stud top 20 guys that require minimal development to contribute at a high level.

Wow, that writer comes off as a whiny bitch. I hate to see Kelly leave ucla for obvious reasons, but the guy realized he didn’t want to be a Head Coach anymore. Playing the “poor assistants out of a job” card is pretty disingenuous. Had he been fired, they would still be out of a job.

He does clearly state the issue in the article - had he left earlier, his former coaching staff would have had the opportunity to search for jobs during a window where there were plenty of openings. This article does not lay enough blame on the UCLA athletic department for its role in this clown show, but Chip Kelly behaved like a narcissistic dirtbag just as he did for his whole tenure.
