If Fresno was like a Gonzaga and you got an offer to go Fresno or Oregon State (who is shit in basketball),

Oregon State is no longer in a Power 4 conference, so it's not a fair comparison now. But prior to the demise of the Pac-12, Fresno State wouldn't have half the resources that Oregon State has in terms of television appearances, expenditure on travel, student-athlete amenities, etc. Most kids are going to want to go where the quality of life is double at School X what it is at School Y.

Consider the Beavers' basketball budget is $7,494,512, while Fresno State's is $3,663,045.

Lunardi said the winner is win and the loser is out. So that’s going to be the projection

Sooners are 4-6 in their last 10. First game of their last 10 was a win over BYU. The other three wins are a sweep of Oklahoma State and a home win over Cincinnati.

    With a NET of 43 (before today's loss) I'd say they're out.

  3. If you're in Kansas City and a T-Mobile customer, the first 100 fans get in 15 minutes before doors open and can hang out in the "Magenta Club" with two free drinks from the bar and a not-quite-dinner but more-than-h'ors douvres buffet.

I hope the committee just admits on Selection Sunday that individual team NET does not matter *that* much.  SOS and wins matter more.

    • Texas - #3 NET, #2 NET conference, 30 wins, #18 SOS, 10-4 Q1 record and 6-0 Q2 record (combined 16-4 Q1/2 record)
      • best wins: #2 UConn, #18 Baylor, #14 KSU (twice)
      • Worst loss: #28 OU (twice)
      • All 4 losses by a total of 14 points and without Rori Harmon*
    • USC - #10 NET, #1 NET conference, 26 wins, #8 SOS, 13-4 Q1 record and 5-1 Q1 record (combined 18-5 Q1/2 record)
      • Best wins: #9 Ohio State, #4 Stanford (twice), #17 Oregon State (twice), #6 UCLA
      • Worst loss: #42 UW at home
      • Lost to Utah by 20 points and the other 4 by 20 points combined

There's not that much difference between Texas and USC's Q1/2 record but USC is going to get a #1 seed because they play in the Pac 12.  Despite a pretty bad home loss to UW and a 20-point blowout to Utah

Only 3 teams in the country with 30 or more wins (Texas, South Carolina and Gonzaga).  But we aren't deserving of a #1 seed

If we’re the 2 in USC’s region (I think we would have to be) there’s not much difference.
    1 = 16, 8/9, probably a 4 or 5

    2 = 15, 7/10, probably a 3 but maybe a 6

It’d also help ensure we go to Portland instead of Albany… MUCH better travel destination.

6'9" and has a TWIN sister, who I couldn't find any info on.

Can you imagine 6'9" twin towers on the Longhorns team!!!!

She's recovering/recuperating from stress fractures that resulted from running with a broken toe. Talked to her dad before the game and she's chomping at the bit to get into the lineup next season. With a 7-foot-3 wingspan, it's amazing how she could go eliminate 25-point a night threats from players like Lee and Cooks.

If this is a rush, I don't want to see what it looks like when they take their damn time. January 6th was three damn years ago.

Interesting that Trump wasn't targeted in any of these four jurisdictions criminally and two jurisdictions civilly until he announced his run for president, isn't it?

guess I sorta assumed all the t's had been crossed and i's dotted in this instance considering who the defendant was

That’s what happens with mob justice/partisan lawfare in a rush to convict a political candidate. The thirst for blood supplants any consideration of the victim’s Constitutional rights, let alone whether he/she is guilty, let alone if any crime was actually committed.

If Nathan Wade and Fani Willis’ conduct and lies in affidavits and interrogatories (civil and criminal), abuse of IOLTAs, and undisclosed trips to the White House as revealed in the past three weeks should have resonated quite loudly, these ignorant and arrogant oafs are political pawns of Biden’s White House and Jeff DeSantis.

The White House puppet masters are well aware this case is doomed on appeal as a violation of the defendant’s right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. The goal is simply to get media coverage from the indictments, a six-week show trial during the campaign, a conviction by a partisan jury, and the opportunity for pundits to ask out loud if Trump will be watching election returns from jail.

So judges can just throw out charges? Then what use is the grand jury?

You mean people who have thoroughly studied the Constitution can protect a defendant’s rights?

Then why do we have prosecutors?

Anything less than the sweet 16 would be disappointing

    There’s a 90-percent chance that would involve beating a 1 or 2 seed.

Unless we manage two wins in K.C., prepare to be disappointed.

Yes, you a middle aged white dude with money is also equivalent to a broke college student looking to get a degree. How dumb and out of touch our fans can be exceeds my expectations.

I know a number of college students who went to Fresno State over some of the P12 schools because Fresno State is affordable. The location of the city has nothing to do with it from a college student’s perspective. You’re an adult who looks for vacation spots.

I was in my teens when I was in Fresno. I was also in my teens when I went to visit the U. of Arizona and decided I didn't want to live there, though in retrospect it probably would have been OK. Arizona State is also a school I look back on and think would have been a good choice.

But nobody -- regardless of age or ethnicity -- is going to choose living in Fresno over any other viable alternative that's NOT in the desert in the middle of nowhere. Take a look for yourself -- what about this seems appealing?

Sure. But you could say the same thing about Coug High, and Sampson has taken them to multiple Final Fours.

You're kidding, right? Living in a vibrant, large city like Houston vs. living in deserted and dying shithole in the middle of nowhere like Fresno?

It seems like some people have no understanding of what California is outside of San Diego, Long Beach, Hollywood and San Francisco.

Ever been to Fresno?  The California kids will go to any PAC school before attending Fresno.

Exactly. Fresno is essentially in the middle of a desert and hours away from anything of interest. I was there for a week once and was absolutely miserable.

Not sure if you’ve noticed but the world’s changed in the last 20 years big guy. If you can’t take an Uber when UT is paying you $2-10mn a year, you deserve to get fired.

We knew in 2000-whatever it was that driving after drinking was an irresponsible and potentially deadly choice.

yeah, maybe for most coaches, but we all know that the only way RT’s sorry ass could get to the S16 with his own team is by beating a 10 seed followed by a 15 seed. otherwise that shit is never happening.

There's really something wrong with you.

the only comparisons that i’ve seen made have come up when people have excused RT’s 10 years of mediocrity at fresno state and utep. they’ve claimed that, because the guys before/after RT didn’t win big at those schools, that it doesn’t mean anything that he didn’t win there either. in response to that, it’s been pointed out that truly good coaches win wherever they are, whether that’s UALR, UNT, Buffalo, SFA, Wagner, wherever.

i don’t see many people randomly inserting beard into the discussion, and it’s reasonable/predictable that he will be brought up from time to time considering how closely linked he is with all of this. as time goes on his time here be less and less relevant and folks will stop bringing his name up.

You keep saying that, even though it's total bullshit.

***Brad Underwood cheated at SFA. All three of his NCAA appearances were vacated because they used academically ineligible athletes.

***Grant McCasland made the NCAA Tournament once in six years at UNT, never making it to the Sweet 16.

***Nate Oats was in Buffalo for four years and made the NCAA Tournament twice, never making it to the Sweet 16.

***You can't compare Chris Beard's success at Texas Tech (a Power 5 conference school) to Terry's time at Fresno and UTEP. He had one year at a mid-level D I school (UALR) but didn't make the Sweet 16 there.

***Bill Self was 55-54 in four years at Oral Roberts and 42-22 in his first two years at Tulsa (a one-and-done in the NCAAs) before making his Elite Eight appearance in his final season.

  16. 3 hours ago, shadow_operative said:

also, our feelings about beard are not based solely on his short time at Texas. his entire career as a HC he has been on a directly upward trajectory, the likes of which reflect those of other elite coaches. every single stop he’s made he’s been elite, and he’s done so very very quickly.

Yet somehow, after not being astute enough to resign the minute he was released from jail, he's now 20-11 and 7-11 in a league weaker than the Big XII.

So I guess "very very quickly" is at least one "very" too many.

Also, not sure back-to-back 18-win seasons after an NCAA Championship Game appearance is a directly upward trajectory.

So I guess "directly" is another adverb that needs to be edited out of your post.

  17. 3 hours ago, shadow_operative said:

nope. not even close. he accomplished so much more than “1 NCAA tournament win and 0 Big 12 tournament wins”. for one, i’ve been to as many/more UT home games as anyone here, and chris beard transformed our basketball atmosphere and culture overnight. what he did with our students, and blue hairs, and season ticket holders, and his work with the athletic department and on campus to create a world class environment was remarkable. there isn’t another coach in america who could have done what he did in that department. he is one of a kind when it comes to buy-in and excitement.

as for what eles he did, im not even going to keep going very much further about what he did with the bombed out and depleted roster he inherited which ended up being no.1 in kenpom 18 months later, because at this point you either understand why chris beard was special or you don’t. it goes so far beyond the product on the court. he is absolutely a special coach, and everything that he did at UALR, TTU, and Texas proves that.

Dude, Chris Beard didn't persuade the UT Regents to build a med school where the Erwin Center was. The "world-class environment" could have existed under Lemons or Penders if they weren't relegated to working in The Worst Arena Ever (Not) Designed For Basketball.

I graduated from UT. I root for our athletics programs and the coaches that lead the teams (unless they are pieces of shit). I also root for our school to do well academically and our professors to win awards.

Unless Terry starts beating his wife or driving drunk around town I’ll continue to root for him and the basketball program.

So Augie Garrido wasn't good enough for you?

As expected, we flipped with USC and now are the #2 seed with USC (so #5 overall).

I find Creme's bracket a little lazy.  He really shoved KSU, Baylor and Texas all in Portland 4.  OU is in Albany 2 and WV is in Portland 3.

Also 3 SEC teams are in the First Four, so he guesses we have to watch at least 1 SEC/SEC matchup (aggy-Vandy is what he has now)

I’ll gladly take a 2 if USC is the one.

We played absolutely nobody outside of the conference. We sit below the midway point in the conference standing. If that doesn't say average, you prove my point regarding the pro-RT crowd.

Defending a stupid argument also makes you stupid. He is equating Bill Self, who has own mutiple titles, to RT. Self arguably hasn't done an above average coaching job this year but it doesn't make him a bad coach (nothing will given what he has accomplished). RT on the other hand hasn't proven himself yet.

Anyway, I am done here. Carry on.

Talk about "using numerous convenient qualifiers."

Is it Rodney Terry's fault that Louisville tanked this year?
You do realize Connecticut is poised for a No. 1 seed in the tournament, right?
You do realize Marquette is poised for a No. 2 seed in the tournament, right?

LSU is a 17-14 SEC team; not great, but again, not an "absolutely nobody."

Again, the overall result of the Texas basketball team's regular season is a 20-11 record and a No. 25 ranking in the NET. Saying Top 25 is "average" is ridiculous.

And Shadow Operative started the Bill Self comparisons. So take that up with him.

  21. 53 minutes ago, UTEE97 said:

I see people bending over backwards to justify why RT is a good coach by using numerous convenient qualifiers.

Convenient qualifiers like "After leading Texas to the Elite Eight, his second-year squad is ranked No. 25 in the NET rankings that the NCAA uses to select the tournament field"?

That kind of bending over backwards?

I got two engineering degrees from UT and an MBA from a top 3 school. Please educate me on my reading comprehension. Unlike you, I don't spend aĺl day here, but when I come here, I see the same predictable posts.

Well, first of all you don’t selectively look at a coach’s overall success based on a single factor like “conference record” unless you want to argue that Bill Self is an average coach because he has a 10-8 Big 12 record.

The holistic regular season record (20-11) and, more importantly, the NET ranking (25) show he did not have an “average” year.

it would have been nice to have a healthy Shedrick at West Virginia and vs. UCF. It would have been nice to have a healthy Disu at Baylor. But shit happens.

But we’re positioned right now to be able to make more noise in the Big 12 Tournament than we were a week ago — having gone from an 9 seed to a seven seed — and hopefully can play our way into a 6 in the NCAAs to make a Sweet 16 run a possibility.
