“There are those that say, 'Well, this will hurt the dollar. It’s bad for our reputation.' I have a pushback to that. I don’t want criminals investing in American Treasury bonds,” McFaul said.

Honestly, it wouldn’t be the worst thing for us if certain countries didn’t have so much invested here. That is at least part of what gives them more power and influence than they should have

I hadn’t thought about it until now but this could be part of the delay depending on the composition of these reserves. How many bonds will have to be sold? Interest rates are a concern.

Also, which European banks hold these? Liquidating or moving $300B around can adversely affect banks’ health given that it’s a fractional reserve system.

Exactly. The only argument I see being made against it is it sets a bad precedent, as in another sovereign nation could do the same to us.

Actually the precedent is that the West will do this to other nations that step out of line. I think it is totally justified to do to Russia given the situation, but the tricky part is that other nations may suspect that it could eventually happen to them for lesser discretions once this seal is broken. They will adjust how they hold reserves.

Given that this move has been telegraphed and threatened for a while, I’m sure they’re already making those changes anyway so we might as well go for it.

One of the problems is this trumped up vague notion of “having it all”. Nobody really “has it all”.   There’s always some trade off to be made somewhere….always.

Great point. There are no solutions, just trade offs.

Also wanting to “have it all” in this context to me implies material things. As you get older you realize those things matter less than health and meaningful relationships. None are more important than those between close family.

To me it’s no surprise that as the prominence of the nuclear family declines, mental illness increases. Especially in women. True fulfillment for them doesn’t lie in pursuing money and titles in offices etc. Fighting biology is a losing proposition for most

Women are no longer conditioned to believe that there is shame in not getting married young and breed stock.  Film at 11.

They want educations and careers and robust lives.  How odd.

Robust lives, yet apparently less fulfilling. American women’s mental health has never been worse.

The Russian media is not allowed to criticize Putin or the Special Military Operation or they get shut down and their employees jailed.  Russian people are not allowed to criticize Putin or the Special Military Operation or they get jailed. You get hauled off to jail just for standing in public and holding up a blank piece of paper.

So how much support he actually has is unknown, because the fear is real.

Do you know any Russians? Or any expats with family still there? Unfortunately, broadly the support is real, because the Russian media control is complete. They don’t know any better. Hoping for revolt from within is nonstarter.

It’s a very rational response. It’s big and showy for the Islamic world to see that Iran isn’t going to take its consulate getting bombed without a response.  But the response is done in such a way that Israel can repel it with little difficulty and virtually no damage.

Israel can declare victory and call it a day based on the performance of its air defenses and the support it has received from its allies.  And, in fact, that’d probably be the smart play.

But it’s not the play that keeps Bibi in office and out of prison. So really no chance of that happening.

It’s pretty clear that with all the leaks about timeline and details ahead of time that this was discussed between all parties. Appropriate show of force but no major civilian targets hit. Israel says 99% of targets taken down.  Look how great our defenses are, and so on.

There’s been other clips from past Presidents describing the back channel discussions that happen before these attacks. This is following the formula. Nothingburger as they say.
