When was this model implemented? Prior to the season; or was it some strategic gamesmanship by the conference?

Prior to this season for sure. This is UTRGV's first season in the SLC, so I can't vouch for prior years.

  2. You have it pretty much exactly. The top two regular season teams each host one side of the bracket. The top seeded teams to win each side advance to the championship series. The championship series is hosted by the highest seeded of the remaining two teams.

I love it. Rewards winning a lot of regular season games, which is a weakness in a lot of post-season conference tourneys IMO. Also gives home field advantage, which is great. Really great for UTRGV, which will put 6000 fans in the stands for all of their games down there.

UTRGV scores 2 in the top 9th to make it close, but ultimately falls to TCU 4-3

My son was the last out. Love the game, but man that sorta thing is just brutal sometimes. Baseball players and field goal kickers... gotta leave that last one in the rear view mirror and not look back.

  4. Yeah man, this was our view of the Vaquero game. Our son isn’t playing as much as he would like, but it’s a great dugout. If they keep this up, it might be a real interesting offseason for the program.

  5. Comparing Akina and Larry Johnson's resumes is some really pedantic shit. Both are stellar.

Heard Burton and Babers talking about Akina. He had put over 40 players in the league by 2022. There was apparently a 10-year stretch when every starter at corner under Akina played in the NFL. Some of the very best DBs I've ever seen at Texas were coached by this guy.

Yes, he's 68. Speaking of Larry Johnson, that dude is still doing it at 73. Texas' staff is going to change a lot going forward. Hiring a coach who is going to be here long-term would be great, but it's just not going to happen all the time. Akina can still coach. We don't need a coach for the next ten years. We need one now. Because we are in a championship window. Now.

  6. Jason Burleson.

I was really excited to receive a subscription to Robert Heard's Inside Texas newsletter (an actual snail mail, paper newsletter about UT sports) for my birthday back in 1987 or 1988. Heard talked Burleson up something fierce. Listed him at 6'7", explained how that height was going to produce a QB the likes of which the world had never seen. Pretty sure he ended up at TE and never really did much.

UTRGV just beat #20 Dallas Baptist 15-5

First time beating a ranked team since 2003. They played at Globe Life because of the weather. Those boys were super jacked about the whole experience.

I feel like all the announcements by guys who are out of eligibility is an acknowledgement that you can play for as many years as you want as long as you have a good lawyer.

Nah, I like it. It’s announcing to the world that they are going pro even if it’s their only option. Lots of high school players and their parents might not know. And keeps us front and center. Keep them coming.

Are you taking about white flight from Schertz, Selma, Universal City, Cibolo?

    Interesting.

In regards to SA republicans and their German catholic origins, San Antonio has a fascinating political history.

If you go back, there were political alliances that bucked national trends and would be a fun ‘Yellowstone meets Centennial’ type of story if anyone ever wanted to make one. Freed African Americans allying with German Catholics that held together even after the national shift to the democratic party later in the 20th century. Hell there were rich ass cattle driving Jews as well! Crazy stuff.

Maybe some from those areas but I’m mostly talking about the more affluent portions of Northside and Northeast ISD inside 1604.

  10. There's a lot of white flight from north and northeast San Antonio towards NB and Boerne and all points in between. And a whole lot of the people I know are moving/have moved into this belt at least in part because of its social and political conservatism. The whole area has been red for as long as I've been around it (~35 years). German Americans and others frequently fall into that category of R's that despise Trump but don't have the moxy to jump ship.
