Prehistoric shit is my jam, so I picked this up at the library and I know I'm going to love it just a few pages in. Rach chapter, he describes a specific location of a given epoch/era as if you are there, observing the landscape and its inhabitants.

Appropriately, I just recently finished reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World.

    The-Lost-World.jpg

It's very interesting to read Doyle's description of an Allosaurus, based on the state of paleontology in 1912:

In the deep shadow of the tree there was a deeper shadow yet, black, inchoate, vague—a crouching form full of savage vigor and menace. It was no higher than a horse, but the dim outline suggested vast bulk and strength. That hissing pant, as regular and full-volumed as the exhaust of an engine, spoke of a monstrous organism. Once, as it moved, I thought I saw the glint of two terrible, greenish eyes... The thing moved forward with a dreadful snarl. Lord John never hesitated, but, running towards it with a quick, light step, he dashed the flaming wood into the brute's face. For one moment I had a vision of a horrible mask like a giant toad's, of a warty, leprous skin, and of a loose mouth all be-slobbered with fresh blood. The next, there was a crash in the underwood and our dreadful visitor was gone.

Yes. You just won't be able to get the 3 day early access, and the pre-order bit is a little more complicated, depending on the retailer.

I'm in the same boat. Fuck that digital nonsense.

For what it's worth, some of the newer AAA titles are too large to fit on Blu-ray discs in use today. The physical disc just contains download keys.

This is just dumb.  By this definition, the Pilgrims were quitters. They could have stayed in England but they were dissatisfied with their situation in their current country so they just quit.  And Willie Nelson? A quitter. He was dissatisfied with his situation in Nashville so he just quit and moved to Austin. And guess what? He ended up winning. Platitudes like "quitters never win and winners never quit"  are disproved by history,  which is filled with examples of people who "quit" one thing/place and ended up winning somewhere else.

Babur was a quitter. He fought for and lost Samarkand no fewer than three times, then fled Transoxiana to India ...where he founded one of India's greatest empires.

Temüjin was a quitter. He was defeated by his own brother in battle and fled into hiding for ten years... then returned, seized the mantle of Genghis Khan and built the Mongol Empire.

  4. Ewers is Texas' third EA Sports CFB cover athlete, joining Ricky Williams and Brian Orakpo. That's tied for second-most with USC, behind Michigan who has four. Pretty cool.

blOU and A&M fans will not be thrilled, having to buy a game with Ewers on the cover 😁

I was thinking Shedeur was a lock, but it’s interesting that he has yet to post the “I’m in the game” advertisement. I’m wondering if it comes out eventually that the Sanders family pulled the same move as the Mannings and opted out. Either that or EA is planning some big splash when they reveal him. Travis Hunter and Ewers/Beck/Milroe all posted it FWIW.

Saw Ewers, Hunter, and Donovan Edwards getting some traction in the Reddit comments and thought it was a solid guess.

If anyone from Colorado deserves a cover it's Travis Hunter. But Sanders has the more marketable last name, unfortunately.

The fact that they're doing just one player per P4 conference probably screws Ewers. Despite winning the Big 12 title he won't get to be the Big 12's pick because of our SEC move, while the SEC's pick will probably be someone from their conference title game (Milroe or Beck).

  6. Any chance Ewers is a cover athlete? There will be multiple cover athletes but just one QB, so Ewers will have to beat out Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe and Carson Beck for the cover spot.

I’ve previously reported that EA Sports College Football 25 is tentatively scheduled to come out on July 19, with a “full reveal” from EA Sports coming in May. While previous reporting (from myself and other reporters) has mostly focused on licensing, assets, and intellectual property, I’m told that the company plans to provide additional gameplay and feature information in their May update.

One of those details the company plans to release in May? Who is going to be on the cover of the game. I’ve been making calls of my own, and I can share some details to help everybody narrow their guesses a bit, thanks to multiple conversations I’ve had with multiple individuals with direct familiarity with EA’s cover choices. I can share that:

    • There are multiple cover athletes, since EA is releasing multiple versions of the video game.
    • Each cover athlete is a current college football player who plays in a different power conference. There was plenty of internet speculation that the cover athlete could potentially be a coach (Nick Saban?), or any number of athletes that played during the years the game was not released (previous Heisman winners?) or even fans/mascots (the Oregon Duck?!?). Those were reasonable guesses, but I’ve been told that the athletes will be current athletes…people you will see play actual college football this season.
    • The athletes all play different positions. That means there’s only one quarterback, one running back, etc.

    Happy guessing!

We all like Bobby and Gerry, but I'm not sure if recreating Hornfans over there, with no negativity or cussing, with those football savants is going to be much fun.

Taking a page out of TexAgs' book with the 'leave Britney Terry Joseph alone' paragraph. Although it is interesting Gideon isn't getting as much heat on OTF.

Oh well. We'll see how bad things get in the secondary this fall. The proof is in the pudding.

Slow Down by Kohei Saito, Japanese wannabe Karl Marx.  He thinks we in the Global North should all feel terribly guilty for our gluttonously destructive and imperialist lives that exploit all the sufferers in the Global South; and that as a result capitalism should be dismantled and replaced with communism.  Guess he forgot to ask China.

Saito is a proponent of "degrowth", which to put it delicately, is the modern-day equivalent of Malthusianism. Even Marx supported communism because he thought it would accelerate growth, not stop it. https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/people-are-realizing-that-degrowth

Anyway, I recently picked up Lords of the Deccan at a book sale. It's a compelling and engaging history of South India, covering the 6th century to the 12th century. During this time period, South India was primarily ruled by three dynasties - the Chalukya dynasty of Badami, the Rashtrakuta dynasty of Manyakheta, and the Chola dynasty of Thanjavur - interspersed by periods of war and conflict between many smaller kingdoms.

  10. Zero Nebraska players drafted, for the second time in five years 😁

Seven straight losing seasons can take its toll, and, for the second time in five years, Nebraska football did not have a former player selected in the NFL Draft. Seven rounds passed over Thursday, Friday and Saturday without a team calling the name of a Husker. Safety Omar Brown was projected by some mock NFL Drafts to go in the 6th or 7th round, but he, like the rest of his former teammates, will have to sign NFL free agent deals.

It’s the first time since 2019  and only the second time in more than 60 years — that a Husker hasn’t been picked in the NFL Draft. In 2019, Nebraska was also coming off the first of a new coach — Scott Frost at the time.

Sure. But, the reason why the perception lasts is that OU and others gleefully repeat it, and Longhorns sorrowfully admit that our forebears fell short and share our regret. The truth is-OU may have been a little better in some areas, and worse in others, and if Texas needs to apologize to anyone it sure isn’t the Sooners.

The 1956 USC vs. Texas game made Texas a much more visible national flashpoint for integration issues.
