  1. EJ after dark: Top prospects planning Texas visits

    — Wekiva (Fla.) outside linebacker Rian Davis is looking to use some official visits in early June, and Texas is a likely landing spot. The Longhorns have been recruiting him hard since offering earlier this month and are making a big impact in his recruitment. Davis attended Clear Lake in the Houston-area last year and would love to return to the Lone Star State to play college ball. Texas should be in the thick of things until the very end in this recruitment.

    — Huntsville defensive lineman and Texas commit T’Vondre Sweat told me that he is looking to visit Austin at some point this week or weekend. Sweat picked the Longhorns last month and is firmly solid. He is looking forward to making it back to campus and checking out a practice.

    — Mater Dei (Calif.) quarterback Bryce Young, the nation’s top signal-caller in 2020, is planning to make it campus at some point before spring ball comes to a close. Young does not hold an offer from Texas at this point in the process, but that could change if he does in fact make it to campus, especially since he is planning to make an early decision.

    — Another big-time 2020 prospect looking to make a visit to Texas at some point in April is four-star Saint Louis Trinity Catholic (MO) running back Mookie Cooper. He picked up an offer from the Longhorns last year. He also holds scholarships from Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma and others.

  3. Stumbled upon one of the great matches of Federer's early career, a terrific 6-7 6-3 7-6 victory over Andre Agassi to win the 2003 Tennis Masters Cup (equivalent to the World Tour Finals). Federer faced two match points but saved both. This was Federer's first ever win against Agassi, and the start of an eight-game winning streak against the American that would last until Agassi finally retired.

  4. Bevo Nuggets: Visitor scoop; latest on Louisiana targets

    By EJ Holland

It wasn’t the biggest week for recruiting visitors from a rankings standpoint, but the Longhorns still hosted several key prospects on campus. Perhaps the most intriguing takeaway from this weekend is that the tight end position is still a little bit of a mystery. Texas would like to take a couple at the position this cycle, but it’s clear the Longhorns are still feeling things out. Three tight ends made their way to Austin for spring practice — Brock’s Baylor Cupp, Temple’s Jared Wiley and Chandler’s (AZ) Brayden Liebrock. The most important target out the bunch might be Cupp and he’s certainly the most complete tight of the trio. While he is a small school prospect, Cupp isn’t all that raw and excels as both a blocker and a pass catcher.

Most have Cupp pegged to Texas A&M, but he doesn’t speak to the media, so much of that is speculation. From talking to sources, Texas made a big impact on Cupp during his latest visit and is firmly in the mix for his services. The recruiting process is still fairly new to Cupp, and I’m also told he’s still taking it all in, so a decision isn’t expected to come soon. And that means Texas has plenty of time to keep putting in work here. This was Cupp’s second time on campus of the offseason as he also visited for junior day.

Liebrock is perhaps the best receiving tight end on the board, and the Longhorns definitely made an impact on his visit. The fast-rising recruit said he was intrigued by the offensive system as well as the education offered. But there is still plenty of work to do in this recruitment. Pac-12 schools like Arizona State and California are high on his mind, and Ohio State and Notre Dame are considered early frontrunners.

Wiley is somewhat of a strange case. Texas offered after junior day, and he only holds one other P5 scholarship (Missouri). You would think he would jump at the offer from the Longhorns and make a quick decision. However, I am told that Wiley is still patiently waiting for an offer from TCU and doesn’t want to make a decision before the end of spring. Texas has the inside track as of right now, but it will be interesting to see what happens if the Horned Frogs do jump in the mix.

Texas also played host to newly offered California outside linebacker Spencer Lytle. UT defensive coordinator Todd Orlando did an excellent job of putting an offer on the table at the right time and getting him on campus — Lytle was previously scheduled to only visit Texas A&M. The Longhorns are legitimate players for Lytle following the visit. He was really impressed with Orlando’s coaching as well as the education at Texas and the city of Austin. Don’t be surprised if he makes a return trip down the line. Remember, Lytle is a teammate of five-star cornerback and Texas target Chris Steele, so recruiting Lytle hard could help with the recruitment of Steele, who is still expected to make it to campus at some point this spring.

Two other out-of-star visitors also made their way to campus in Oklahoma running back Marcus Major and Oklahoma wide receiver Demariyon Houston. I’m told both prospects really enjoyed their time at Texas. The Longhorns really sold Major on an opportunity for early playing time, depth chart and Stan Drayton’s resume. Meanwhile, they pushed a big need at slot receiver to Houston and a chance to get on the field right away. According to a source, Major and Houston want to play together at the next level and are far from locks to Oklahoma, which has yet to offer Houston. If Texas keeps working hard on both, the Longhorns will be right around the top of the list for both.

The Longhorns have been incredibly active recruiting the state of Louisiana this cycle. While pulling those athletes away from LSU and the SEC can be a challenge, Tom Herman’s staff has shown they aren’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with anyone. I spoke with a key Louisiana source this weekend to get the scoop on a number of targets.

    RB Tyrion Davis, Southern Lab

Davis is already committed to LSU, and his high school is basically on LSU’s campus. Our source indicated that this would be a very tough task for Texas, and he didn’t have a lot of faith in anyone pulling him away from LSU.

    WR Devonta Lee, Amite

Lee will most likely take his visits, but the word is that the Longhorns are on the outside looking in. Alabama and LSU seem to be the leaders at this point, and both schools have been on Lee for some time now. If the Longhorns can get him on campus they will have their shot, but they are going to have to overcome a lot of strong relationships with other schools.

    WR Trey Palmer, Kentwood

Palmer is reportedly planning to visit Austin in the spring, but they will have some work to do once they get him on campus. LSU is thought to be the favorite here, and the Tigers have the home state advantage.

    OG Kardell Thomas, Southern Lab

Thomas has always had a fascination with Texas, and he’s visited on several occasions. A different source indicated that Thomas might not be as solid to LSU as he is portraying, and if that’s the case, you have to like the Longhorns’ chances of getting in the mix. Our source indicated that they expected LSU to sign him, but Texas would be in a prime position if something went awry.

    CB Derek Stingley, Dunham School

Stingley included Texas in a recent cut, and he’s been to Austin on multiple occasions. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Longhorns receive an official visit, but our source indicated the Longhorns are running third, at best. Stingley publicly named LSU his leader on several occasions, and he’s also got a lot of interest in Florida.

CB Chester Kimbrough, New Orleans Warren Easton

This was one prospect our source was bullish on with the caveat that Texas needed to get him on campus. I was told that it wouldn’t be a shocker for Texas to get an official visit, and that Kimbrough is pretty wide open at this point in time. Kansas and Florida are the schools standing out to him at this time.

    ATH Christian Harris, University Lab

Alabama and LSU are the leaders here, and my source did not seem confident that any other schools would be able to get into the picture.

    ATH Makiya Tongue, University Lab

This will come down to the pitch schools are giving to Tongue. Many schools view him as a safety or linebacker, but Tongue also has the ability to play receiver. He visited Austin earlier in the spring, and he came away impressed. The Longhorns have a shot to get an official visit, and if they do, they have a good shot to win him over, according to my source.

Christian White aka Coach Flight works with some of the best running backs and defensive backs across the country. Horns247 caught up with Flight to get his quick thoughts on some of the Texas targets he’s trained over the last few days.

RB Noah Cain, IMG Academy (Fla.)

“I see him being one of the best all around running backs in the country. He has a great combination of power and speed. People kind of underestimate how fast of a runner he is in the open field. He’s very elusive and knows how to run, which there is a technique to as far as finding the running lanes and running into space not people.”

    S Darius Snow, Hebron (2020)

“Snow is very quick on his feet. So many people are quick to throw out that he’s going to grow into this or grow into that. But I see him being one of the most physical safeties in the game. He’s a really evenly distributed kid. He’s really light on his feet. He’s really aggressive with his hands and also has good ball skills for his size.”

    S Chris Thompson, Duncanville (2020)

“Man, Chris Thompson has the tools to go down as one of the best players to ever come out of that South Dallas area. He’s a legitimate 6-foot-2 kid. He has great vision and is really physical. He’ll see things before they happen. If you watch his film, you’ll see he reads run/pass very well. He’s going to put on a good showing this offseason and show people he can cover man-on-man.”

    S Jonathan McGill, Coppell

“McGill is probably one of the most versatile defensive backs in the country. I feel like he can line up at any position in the secondary and help a team get better. He has great vision at safety. He has great technique to play corner. People want to see him run faster, but with a little bit of time, he’ll grow into that frame and show guys he’s a little bit quicker than people think."

  5. EJ after dark: Observations from weekend clinics

    — Noah Cain certainly looks the part of an elite back in shirt and shorts. Cain displayed quick feet during drills, tremendous explosion and speed during his initial 20-yard burst. I saw Cain live as a sophomore and caught a couple of games on TV this past season, and it was easy to see his power and vision. It appears Cain has revamped his explosiveness and quickness this offseason, and it’s clear the IMG program is helping his add more muscle mass to his body. Cain should very much be in the conversation for top running back in the country.

    — Darius Snow is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2020 class. Snow, who is ranked as the nation's top safety, is a massive striker on film and is already up to 210 pounds, so there is some concern about him getting too big for the safety position over the next couple of years. Snow, however, is adamant that he wants to stick in the secondary. He did show solid cover skills, quick feet and physicality when working against quicker wide outs during route releases, but he needs to keep improving his hips and flexibility. Snow does have a thick lower half, which screams linebacker when you first see him. But as he works through drills, you can see his potential as a ‘colossal safety,’ as he likes to say.

    — With Jalen Catalon still on the board and having increasing interest in Texas, it’s hard for me to make the argument that Texas should offer Coppell defensive back Jonathan McGill, but he might be too good to pass up. No, McGill isn’t the highest ranked prospect in the state, but he’s arguably the most versatile. Like D’shawn Jamison last cycle, McGill is an electric playmaker in the secondary that is always in attack mode. On top of that he has a high football IQ, is an excellent student in the classroom and a high character kid. He would be the perfect scheme fit at nickel and the perfect culture fit at Texas.

    — It’s a weak year at cornerback in the state of Texas this recruiting cycle, so Texas is rightfully looking at elite prospects out-of-state. But one recruit I feel like colleges are completely missing the boat on and could be a late riser is Duncanville cornerback Tre’shon Devones. At 6-foot, 165 pounds, Devones has excellent length, great raw athleticism and so much upside. Baylor, Louisiana-Monroe and Texas State are his only offers, which is a bit mind-blowing to me. Little Elm’s Brandon Crossley is another under-the-radar recruit that could see his stock rise this spring. He reminds me of Kobe Boyce and recently notched an offer from TCU.

  6. Carrying this thread over from ShaggyTexas. Federer's early hardcourt season has ended with a first-round exit in the Miami Open to Thanasi Kokkinakis. As usual, Federer will skip the upcoming clay season (Monte Carlo Masters, Barcelona, Rome Masters, French Open) and return for the grass season.

So anyone know why Wilson is getting tOSU picks this weekend

My last post on the Shag:

Bill Kurelic: Buckeyes hit home with country's No. 6 WR Garrett Wilson

Austin (Texas) Lake Travis wide receiver Garrett Wilson cut his long list of scholarship offers down to eight schools in early March. He has been moving forward in the recruiting process with Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Nebraska. Wilson lived in Dublin, Ohio for approximately six years. He was back in Columbus Thursday evening and visited Ohio State on Friday. “It was a great visit,” Wilson said. “I knew a little about Ohio State, but now I feel fully informed.” Wilson made the trip back to Ohio with both of his parents. They had a very full day at Ohio State. “We got a tour,” Wilson said. “We watched practice. I met with coach (Urban) Meyer, coach (Ryan) Day and coach (Zach) Smith. I saw the locker room and the Woody Hayes Facility. I sat in the wide receivers meeting. I met with coach Meyer twice. I talked to him for two, two and a half hours.”

While Wilson has eight schools left from his long list of scholarship offers, this seems likely to come down to a two team battle. “Ohio State and Texas, those are the two schools I’ve decided on for official visits so far,” Wilson said. “Texas might be April 14. Ohio State might be in June. I’d say those are my top two with TCU in there as well.” Wilson and 2018 Ohio State quarterback signee Matthew Baldwin, who has enrolled at Ohio State, were a spectacular duo last season in leading Lake Travis to the Texas big school state championship game. Wilson hung out with Baldwin on Friday night before he and his parents headed for Notre Dame on Saturday morning for a visit with the Fighting Irish. The 6-foot-0 and 185-pound Wilson is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is the country’s No. 46 overall prospect, the No. 6 wide receiver, and the No. 7 prospect in Texas.

  8. E.J. Holland: Rising TE Jared Wiley recaps weekend Texas visit

Texas hosted a handful of visitors this weekend, including tight end target Jared Wiley. The three-star prospect out of Temple took in the Longhorns’ first padded practice and enjoyed his time on campus. “The visit went great,” Wiley said. “I got to catch up with the coaches and some of my old teammates. My favorite part was definitely watching the practice. I haven’t heard any pads pop since December, so it was almost relaxing to hear that sound again.” Wiley paid close attention to new tight ends coach Derek Warehime and the way he coached the position group. “(Warehime) was very hands-on,” Wiley said. “When he talked through something, he’d demonstrate it himself to make sure you had a good idea of what to do.”

Wiley added that he was intrigued with the way the Longhorns utilize their tight ends and believes he would be a great fit in the offensive system. “I think I’d fit in just fine,” Wiley said. “They get the ball in the tight ends’ hands, which is what I really enjoyed watching at practice.” Wiley notched an offer from Texas after attending junior day last month. He also holds scholarships from Houston, Missouri and SMU and is receiving interest from several other programs. So where do the Longhorns sit after this visit? “They are definitely a top choice of mine,” Wiley said. “But I’m waiting to see how these other visits go before I make a decision.” At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, Wiley is ranked as the No. 43 tight end in the country and No. 146 overall prospect in the state, per 247Sports Composite.
