  1. Mike at Night:

    Spoiler

—Texas landed a graduate transfer commitment from Tarik Black earlier today. I checked around to see what I could find out about Black. Everyone I talked to spoke highly of Black’s character and work ethic, but he’s had some foot issues that stymied his productivity at Michigan. I was told Black is known as a strong route runner with great hands, and he could be a reliable security blanket for Sam Ehlinger on the outside as long as he stays healthy.

—We’ve been talking about the possibility of this news for a bit. Black always let Texas know that they were his number one option, and he would be in Austin if everything went according to plan. One big factor was a rule change recently made in college football. Before this year, a hopeful graduate transfer would need to be admitted to a graduate program not offered at his current institution. A recent change allowed graduate transfers to pursue more undergraduate studies, and that rule change was a big domino in Black’s process.

—We are three days out from South Oak Cliff linebacker Jaydon Williams’ announced commitment, and things are starting to appear a bit shaky. Williams has gone virtually silent in preparation for Friday’s announcement, and sources near him aren’t totally sure where his head is at this moment. A recent offer from Oklahoma and interest from other big programs could push his commitment back, and I’m told that Texas wouldn’t necessarily hate that. After offering initially, Texas received overwhelming feedback from Williams calling them a dream school and making indications that they were the leader without visiting. Nothing has turned, but I’m told Williams has been a bit more dodgy in his communications, and now several programs don’t know where they stand. What looked like an easy recruitment initially is starting to worry some people. Maybe it’s a smokescreen, but it’s something I’m definitely watching.

—I’m not ready to call them the leader, but I think Texas is rapidly closing the gap with Denton Guyer cornerback Deuce Harmon. Sources near the four-star cornerback tell me that the Aggies still hold a lead, but Texas is hard charging. I wrote a few weeks ago that schools would need to be all in with their recruitment, and right now Texas is doing that. The longer this plays out, the better it is for the Longhorns.

  2. Mike at Night (Notes and Comments from the story):

    Spoiler

    — As I mentioned earlier today, Texas has been in contact with Michigan wide receiver graduate transfer Tarik Black. Despite some online rumors, I was told by sources close to the situation that there is nothing imminent between both sides. While the Longhorns need a big body on the outside, remember that Black has yet to visit Texas. In a case like this when rumors start to come about, pay attention to the basic details. While Texas could take his transfer without him visiting, it’s unlikely that would happen, based on the way the staff has operated in the past.

Quaydarius Davis released a top six yesterday that included Texas along with LSU, SMU, USC, Oklahoma State and Florida. As I mentioned in the past, it looked like Texas was close to having Davis back in the class a month or two ago, but things got complicated. This is actually a case where the COVID-19 shutdown might help the chances for Texas and Davis to reunite. Still, there are a few hurdles to clear.

    — I spoke to another college team source today who indicated to me that out of state recruiting might be out of the question in this cycle. Not only will the visit timetable me condensed, but parents might also be more apprehensive sending their kids away following this pandemic. Fortunately, Texas is loaded in-state in 2021, but the Longhorns are a bit behind in the class. It will be interesting to see how the dynamics change. (later clairified that the new coaches are behind: "They don’t have a lot of ties to this area and are just getting familiar with these kids. They also didn’t have the chance to build a strong relationship through multiple visits during the spring.")

    — I checked in with some sources regarding four-star Katy Taylor offensive lineman Bryce Foster. There’s been some recent talk that Foster is trending towards Oklahoma, and I was able to get the latest. Oklahoma is and always has been a strong threat for Foster. In fact, last year I wrote that Oklahoma would be the bigger obstacle for Texas than Texas A&M in my mind. Foster visited Oklahoma shortly before the COVID-19 shutdown, and that visit is fresh on his mind. Foster has always been very patient and stern about sticking to his timeline, and it would surprise me to see him make a decision without taking his final visits.

    — I also checked in with sources regarding four-star Cy-Fair running back LJ Johnson. It sounds like the race for Johnson is intensifying as Georgia and Stanford are ramping up their efforts. I checked in with a source near Johnson who told me not much has changed in his recruitment. A source at Texas told me they felt good about where they stood with Johnson, but there were multiple irons in the fire for multiple backs. I’m not sure I’d predict Johnson to Texas right now if given a choice between the Longhorns and the field, but I don’t think they are out of it by any means.

    Comment notes from Roach:

    • Texas is in a good spot with Camar Wheaton and Jonathon Brooks, on the offensive line I feel things are improving a bit with the Brockermeyers, and there are defensive linemen like Jordon Thomas and a great spot for Landon Jackson.
    • Texas is in the race with Fatheree but I think they are further behind.
    • Both sides decided to go their separate ways with Brandon Campbell.

TCU Co-OC Luper is expected to be named the OC for Mizzou and talk is WR Coach Malcolm Kelly could be going with him.  Life comes at you hard QJ.

Hell, given the realities of the transfer portal now, he could enter the transfer portal and come back if we ever decided to hire an offensive staff.

At this point, I can't even tell if you're in favor of such hard-nosed approaches or if I wasn't sufficiently sarcastic . I would have thought that the quotation marks and professed appreciation of drool was a sign, but maybe I'm just sissified (not that those are mutually exclusive).

Chip Long may suck or not, but am I the only one who thinks running out of bounds is weak? Deliver the blow. It's football...not flag football.  It's about attitude, will and domination.  We have a significant issue with the pussyfication of the game. Drives me crazy.

Give me the good old days before "concussion protocol" and other nonsense, when real mean would use their head as a battering ram, drool a little bit and get up to do it again.

Roach was just saying on his podcast that he didnt find Wheaton that impressive...

He's hinted lots of times that he likes LJ Johnson just as much, if not more.

  7. Interesting: Andrew Ellis (tOSU guy) just put in a CB for Ryan Watts to tOSU. Would imagine that has something to do with how hard OU is pushing for Eaton. Looks like Watts decommitted from OU tonight too.

I've been as high on Ringo as anyone since he appeared on the recruiting radar, but I don't think he'd just show up and start here in 2020. If that's part of your recruiting pitch with no concern about it being true, then fine, but if you're expecting that, you might be disappointed.

I think it's reasonable to think it happens, but may be a stretch to assume. If Stingley can start for LSU with their general DB depth, I don't think it's crazy to think Ringo could do the same with us. I'm just hopeful that he comes and Green, Jamison, Cook, etc. make it more difficult than him just being able to walk up and take it.

    Spoiler

I had the opportunity to visit Arizona this week and speak with Bijan Robinson and those around him.

While I was in town, I checked in with sources on a few other things within the Texas sphere. Let’s start with the five-star runner and his commitment level with the Longhorns.

I was able to speak with a few different players, coaches and Robinson himself. From talking to everyone I could about the subject, the consensus I got was that Robinson was incredibly happy with his commitment to the Longhorns. Not only does Texas present the best chance to play, Robinson and those around him feel that Austin is the best fit for him for a future environment.

Robinson himself said that his commitment is “very strong” and he’s looking to get back to Austin for an unofficial visit. Travel from Tucson is pretty tough, so Robinson said he’d have to figure out a week where he was off. He mentioned Thanksgiving as a possibility. He has a few officials left that he can take, and those will be the ones Texas and their fans will have to sweat.

Robinson said he’s not really focused on that right now, and he’s not even sure that he will take any remaining officials. Robinson did confirm that if he takes any additional visits, he would likely trip to Baton Rouge to see LSU. A source I spoke with at LSU said the Tigers have been in contact with Robinson, but there does not appear to be an overwhelming sense of optimism on their part.

The source also indicated that there was some confidence on LSU’s side in landing Galena Park North Shore running back Zachary Evans, which could help the Longhorns.

A source I spoke with in Austin felt very good about their status with Robinson, and I was told that confidence would remain even if Robinson were to take other visits. The bottom line is, from all I gathered it sounds like Robinson is pretty firm and Longhorn fans have nothing to worry about as of now.

    *********************************

While I was in Tucson, I also checked in with Robinson’s teammate, Jonah Miller. The 2021 offensive lineman raved about his trip to Texas in the spring, and he said that Robinson being there makes it even more appealing to him.

Miller said that he connected with the Texas coaches and really loved the way Herb Hand ran practice and drills. Miller mentioned that on other visits he has taken, he has seen some coaches run drills that had no clear purpose, while Hand’s drills are all taught practical skills.

Miller mentioned that this was one of the biggest things to stand out to him.

Miller wants to make it back to Austin next year, and he said the Longhorns would likely get an official visit before he makes his decision. I’d look for that visit to be in the spring or summer since Miller wants to make his decision late summer before his senior season. 2021 is loaded with in-state talent, but a source at Texas indicated that the Longhorns are very high on Miller and pushing for him as part of their 2021 class.

    *********************************

While in Arizona, I also spoke with some sources regarding Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro cornerback Kelee Ringo. I’m going to take this opportunity to re-introduce some cautious Ringo optimism to the Texas fanbase. The key words I’d use here are some and cautious, but it sounds like the door isn’t closed on the Longhorns.

As I mentioned late last week, sources I spoke with felt that Texas was regaining some ground with the elite corner.

A source at Texas indicated more of a 50/50 feeling between the Longhorns and Georgia. I was initially skeptical until I spoke with a source on the Georgia side who also felt that their chances were 50/50. Georgia is pushing for a few other corners right now including five-star LSU commit Elias Ricks.

We are still digging for when Ringo plans to take his official visit, but Texas cornerbacks coach Jason Washington is expected to visit Arizona this week with Texas on its bye.

Texas could make up the ground needed on the official visit, so the timing and experience will be important there. Remain grounded, but you have my permission to get a bit excited here.

    *********************************

Four-star receiver Troy Omeire’s flip from Texas A&M to Texas came as a bit of a surprise to just about everyone covering his recruitment. I’m told that he informed the A&M staff shortly before making the decision and the Aggies were incredibly heated.

Omeire’s recruitment swung back and forth during the spring and summer, and on multiple occasions, he gave both schools silent commitments.

Before he made his initial public commitment to A&M, I decided to keep my crystal ball on Texas because of the back and forth nature of this recruitment. A source at Texas told me a few weeks ago that the Longhorns were “still swinging” at Omeire along with several other targets. In fact, Texas never backed off following Omeire’s original commitment to A&M.

Despite reports that Omeire wasn’t a take for the Longhorns, he was indeed a huge priority.

Texas likes big receivers and they feel Omeire is a strong fit for their offensive scheme. The Longhorns didn’t put the hard push on him once he was committed, but they did make sure to stay top of mind with the Houston-area four-star prospect.

As I wrote on Friday, the win was big for Texas in yet another head to head victory over the Aggies, and the first flip in this series in quite a while.

    *********************************

State momentum will probably swing year to year between both teams, but Texas appears to have seized the momentum for now. It will be interesting to see what changes A&M makes to combat this because the Aggies have made some curious tactical decisions on the recruiting front this year.

Texas is likely down to about three-to-four scholarships for 2020, so we are truly in the home stretch for this class.

    Hester Fong'd to Missouri.

The guy that CBd him to OU is a Baylor reporter, so likely just seeing a WR with an OU offer and figured that he's definitely going to OU. That is also his only 2020 CB, so not sure what the hell is going on with feeling the need to make that prediction.

Running backs are worth every scholarship that the university provides them. They are immensely popular with fans throughout Texas and they typically connect with teammates extremely well.  They may not always be the most durable players, but when healthy they are one of the most important positions on the team. Herman appears to be confident in their abilities when he sends them out on the field.

  14. Roach note on Jordan: "It's been a pretty slow day, so i don't have a ton for Mike at Night. I did see West Mesquite RB Ty Jordan in action today. I spoke to him for a bit after practice, and it sounds like his decision could actually come during the season. Jordan said he's had some thoughts about doing it before the season, but he's not entirely sure on a timeline yet. Ty told me that Tennessee, USC, and Utah are the other schools in the mix for his decision. I still feel good with my Texas crystal ball."

Jonah Miller is an OT (#29 OT) at Bijan's high school, so I would imagine we have a good inroad there, but I doubt we would push for/accept a commitment from him this early. That's the only '21 AZ offer, so would assume he's talking about Bijan or hinting at Ransom/Ringo, but have no idea ($9.95).

I know it don't make a shit, but I'm curious.... In the 247 team rankings, Georgia is 5 and we are 6. Yet we have more total recruits than Georgia (17 to their 16) and a higher average (93.34 to their 93.28). Can anyone explain why/how Georgia is ranked higher?

    what people said above.

  17. SIAP - Roach "I've done some gathering of intelligence on Eaton. From what I can tell, Texas would take him and i was even told by one source they are in the lead for him. Still trying to get more confirmation on that before feeling confident."
