  1. Fuck it, Dude.  Let's go to Isla.

Just booked SWA flights, went ahead and did two rooms at Secreto since I could book through a CC portal and get some point bonuses.

Started this thread over from the beginning and I'll be back with preguntas estupidas.  I already have so many restaurants bookmarked that we'll have to eat five meals a day.

  2. Somehow I'm off for the week after Christmas this year, so I'm toying with the idea of making this our boys' intro trip to Mexico (15yo and 13yo), and it would the first visit to Isla for my wife and I (we usually do the lazy gringo thing at El Dorado Casitas).  What's it like at that time?  Does it get bonkers down there for NYE?  We're usually more chill-on-the beach types, especially given current circumstances.

Is Secreto a no-go for kids that age?  Looked like Ixchel might be a good spot?  Any other places to look?  I'm fine with a condo but I'm sure as hell not planning on cooking.

  3. In lieu of a real fire feature, we installed a couple of the Pentair Magic Bowls:

    Pentair MagicBowl Round Copper
    (not my photo)

It was the first time our builder had used them, so we didn't know what to expect, but we like them a lot and we haven't had any problems with them (yet) after about two years.

Hassle-free, the kids like hanging around under the spillover, and it gives an approximation of a fire feature without inviting stupid adolescent male mischief.

There must not be any more rules with this Covid stuff.

Quite the stern draw, knowwhatimean, nudge nudge?

The boy's been asking about and looking for a good instructor in Central Texas.  Any recommendations?

Found Olympic Outdoor Center in San Marcos, anyone with experience or thoughts? @Snow Dog?

  5. So we're going to hold off for large schools which are more likely to play in a limited geographic area urban district, and let small schools which travel upward of 100 miles to small widely distributed communities with limited rural hospital facilities play?

    BRILLIANT.

    Just delay the whole thing.

  6. Just finished Tim O'Brien's "Dad's Maybe Book." (I knew of him before but have not read him, I will amend that).

He's about 30 years older than I, but we each have two boys of nearly the same ages. What a beautiful and raw and indulgent and honest and selfish and perfect book it was for a dad of boys.

I'm not sure what to do with it yet or how to unpack it, but as of now, the only book that has more proufoundly plucked my fatherly strings has been Cormac McCarthy's "The Road."

    Devastatingly beautiful.

I know Sportsman's Finest is close to you (and I'm totally jealous), but if you ever find yourself in or near downtown Round Rock, stop in and talk to Chris at Living Waters. Local rivers are his jam, and he's extremely knowledgeable about the what, when, and where on all the CenTex rivers. Marcus is his head guide and I believe Asst Manager of the shop, and he's especially good with the happenings on the Llano. Also, the Llano might still be in recovery from the floods last year. I know for a while there, Living Waters wasn't even bothering to post Llano reports because no one was fishing it.

I'm a very beginner fly fisherman, but I stopped into Living Waters a couple weeks ago for the first time, and it was a great experience.  Very helpful and tolerant of my noob questions, and gave me some great tips on flies for my local spot.

Also picked up this book while I was there:

I don't know if that's a well-known resource, but the little I have read so far is very informative and entertaining.

I've tried to stay out of this thread for a long time for the good of my wallet, but we're heading out on the road for Colorado in about 2.5hrs, and feeling totally stoked as well as terrified that I won't be able to resist upgrading my rig while I'm up there.

  8. Appreciate the advice, Deej.  Sent Rupp to the vet even though he was getting better (he was due for his yearly anyway), and they did express some inspissated anal sac material on one side that was likely contributing (I'm very disappointed in South Austin's mom, she's supposed to be taking better care of that).

He also had doggeh swimmer's ear, so glad to get that addressed as well.

He's back to 100% loveable dumbass.

  9. Well, looks like we may have let Rupp overdo it the last couple days.  He's been acting uncomfortable and holding his tail weird.  I"m going to crown myself Vet and diagnose him with Limber Tail Syndrome (links here and here), as he looks pretty much exactly like the pictures/video:

Anybody else had this happen?  Sounds like rest/conservative treatment will clear it up in a few days, but I feel awful for the guy.  Extra treats incoming.

  10. Eh, dry AF, but nobody had a problem eating it. I have no business posting brisket pics on this site, but why not. Did get a decent smoke ring.

Best of all, I had a great day on the back porch with the family.

Oh, and now enjoying the first pour of a keg of homebrew oatmeal stout.

Happy Easter, assholes. God loves you. b775ddcded0f9785785fa9bb4600dc8e.jpg

  11. Indeed it is. Someone on here owned or was connected to Smokemaster, was that you?

Now that the sun is up, the dog is doing a good job finding Easter eggs whilst waiting for his human brothers to wake up.

  12. The dog and I are up with a brisket I discovered in the deep freeze now on the smoker, and admiring the pre-dawn lightning show.

We'll stream church onto the back porch TV.

    Strange times indeed.

Might as well have a sermon beer.

    Happy Easter, Surly. ede014c13faebba266c7772ea5639e00.jpgfdc2e93f89222b5c87f41b3e7b923bfa.jpg
