Sounds like a good plan. I believe a better plan for your future is to invest your remaining 20k in a higher risk/better producing fund. No need to be conservative at your stage, especially since you already have retirement accounts.

How much risk and what fund do you suggest should a 52 year old go with? Back in the stock market ? I got balls , they just hang lower now so they tend to be a little more sensitive and leery. Fuckers that do my IRA only give me a 4% return.

I have about 4k in the Yotta shit , but their returns give me a headache figuring APR

  2. ok. Plan moving forward is to set price sell limits and liquidate to 150-155k. Assume 25-30k for capital gains. Pay off all debts (100k), stash 20k in HYS , blow 5k on stupid shit, use future 4k monthly savings to max out 401k and IRA and then reinvest in balanced portfolio and then strippers and blow

    End result = Profit???

I thought the book was called "To Serve Man"???

I never thought aliens would come here to eat us though.  If you have the technology to get here, you can probably make your own protein bars back home.  What they may come here for though, is water.  And we're 60% water, aren't we?  And if the average human weighs 135 pounds, that's about 65 gallons of water (assuming you have an efficient extraction method, and I'm guessing they do).  So that's 500bn gallons of water in all of us total.  Another few trillion from all the animals, plants, and freshwater.  And then if they can desalinate...another few quadrillion in the oceans.  Nice little hall for a quiet stopover town on the way to the outskirts of the Milky Way.

Sagan will be proven correct, I believe.  There'll be an overture, good bad or indifferent, to let us know that we didn't find them...but they noticed we were out looking.

If they can make their own protein bars, why cant they make their own water? We are talking super ancient alien technology shit here

How will that 100k+ tax bill be further down the road? My point is, the tax won’t go away, quite the opposite, unless you lose all your gains. Once you reach long term capital gains, you  have to decide when it’s best to get out, knowing Uncle Sam is waiting for his cut.

I’m no tax pro but I can tell you the bigger that tax bill gets, the more difficult it will be for you to sell if that’s your main hesitation. Just set the money aside once you liquidate, it’s part of the game we play.

damnit that makes sense. But then I have to figure out WTF to do with 130K to make more money. Reinvest ?Bitcoin? Pay off house and cars? Strippers and Coke?

Right side up on houses and cars , but the balance on 3 cars and house is 102k. APR on House is 2.6%, Cars is 2.95%. Maybe liquidating and getting completely out of debt and saving me 4k a month

I mean I got completely lucky and fortunate to decided to throw a big chunk of our life's savings into stocks when they went into the shitter, now I have a nice return and don't know what the fuck to do with it that makes me more money.

    Might be financial advisor time....

If you hold a year your cap gains rate goes from regular income to long term (20%).  Depending on your income tax bracket that can be significant.

don't know shit so maybe listen to the opposite, but there's the phrase "sell in may and go away".  based on historical yearly averages or some such? most of your portfolio looks to be long term investments and if you don't need the money, then maybe hold with it.  i think it's more difficult to time the dips with long term plays but i'm a noob.

I am not Surly 1% but doing well. 24% thanks to marriage. To me liquidating and getting a 35k+ tax hit is such a ball kicker

My gut says to hold it and chill

  6. Sooooooo lets say someone invested in stocks that fell way down from their 3to5 year average around when covid hit. Now that investment is 4x+. What would the Surly money lords do? hold? sell and let capital gains fuck them? Don't "need" the money currently , but damn don;t know what to do

    Too many unknowns to answer.

Most people I know who leave trade money for security.

Are you just taking a cut on your salary or are you walking away from thousands of shares of RSUs?  Taking a bit of a haircut maybe worth not having a layoff every 6 months. Leaving $150k in stock that could be worth $300k in a couple years maybe not.

I don’t think we have the wild days of the mid 2000s coming back with salary wars and giant signing bonuses. There are still too many unemployed who want back in the game.

If you are happy with the offer, tired of the ups and downs, and aren’t walking away from an unvested fortune it might not be a bad move.

I just wanted to give you a shout out for this post beyond the usual rep. I know the usual Surly response , but its cool when someone just give some clear perspective and guidance without all the assholeery

  8. Yea, the entire area turned black because aspirin is a blood thinner. First load afterwards was fine, just not as much as normal. As a matter fact, its always not as much as before the procedure. I regret getting it , but its done with now . It is what it is
