  1. Texas Longhorns pick up ESPN 300 wide receiver Jake Smith - On The Trail- ESPN

by Tom Luginbill on 2018-06-27 11:00:00 UTC (original: http://www.espn.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/on-the-trail/insider/post?id=81859)

ESPN 300 WR Jake Smith has selected Texas, becoming the sixth top 100 prospect currently committed to the Longhorns. Continue reading to see what he adds to Tom Herman's offense:

What he brings: This guy is just a football player. Smart, heady, competitive and deceptively fast. He's versatile and could play on the inside or outside and is an ideal fit as a return man. Smith is one of those kids who quarterbacks are drawn to because he is so reliable. He has terrific ball skills and makes plays in traffic. You know exactly what you are going to get with him, and it's going to be productive. His ability to develop as a route runner could make him even more dangerous in creating separation.

How he fits: Smith is joining a very experienced group of targets in Austin. Collin Johnson, Donovan Duvernay and Reggie Hemphill-Mapps, not to mention John Burt and Jerrod Heard, assuming all return for the 2019 season.

Reminds us of: Trey Quinn, SMU. Smith is so similar to Quinn when Quinn came out and originally signed with LSU. Just two savvy, smart players who know how to get open and have better speed for which they get credit.

How the class is shaping up: Texas is starting to pick up the pace, as Smith makes nine verbal commitments, six of which are in the ESPN 300. It also has cast a bit of a wider net into California, Georgia and Arizona. However, its top two highest-graded prospects are in-state commits OT Tyler Johnson and ATH Jordan Whittington. Much is expected of QB Roschon Johnson, who athletically fits Tom Herman's offense well

Doesn’t seem like a real step down from Wilson, when you factor in the multiple roles he can take on. Great work by the staff.

I don't think it's a step down because it's a different role that Smith is going to play. He is part of plan A which was something like Whittington, Wilson, Smith and Wright

How so? Genuinely curious. Did I fuck up the post or do you not enjoy that version of football? Honestly, I can understand if you don't now that we know more about concussions and such.

    You double posted bruh

Either Wells was trying to sell $9.95 subscriptions or he is completely out of the loop of information and has to witness something first hand before he can report it.

Those don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I for one am just happy that the big fellow made it in.

ok i'm glad i wasn't the only one who found it odd that an mba in finance 19 years ago was only good enough to become and insurance salesman.

Some people know their limitations I assume

On the offer front, I'd keep a close eye on Langston Anderson. Cumbie was by his school on Tuesday and I was told that the coach liked him very much. Another kid to watch; Peyton Powell out of Permian. TCU wants to see him catch the ball in person before offering.

As if the strategy would be to offer the guys Herman has offered 😉

I'm not saying Mehringer is good or bad. Maybe he is bad. But CTJ has provided no evidence that he sucks. He's just whined and complained about him for the last year. Pretty hard to prove your point with no evidence. About the closest thing out there are vague rumors of WR team room unhappiness, Duvernay almost transferring and whiffing on Wilson, not really enough yet to pin on Mehringer.  Personally, after seeing his Rutgers performance I was skeptical of the guy, but I figured Herman wouldn't make such a big hiring mistake (of course as I typed that I just thought of Beck. Oh gawd, we're effed).

    Do you even waddle bro
