England had a few things that finally forced their hand. They had some high profile domestic and international incidents with violence and deaths attributed to them, which resulted in UEFA banning on English teams from European competition for 5+ years. That'll move the needle. You also have fans of opposing teams separated and kept away from each other by highly visible and organized security and police.

Also the Hillsborough disaster in 89 spelled the end of standing GA seating. That’s cooled thing down a bit too.

    This still holds true.

Equestrian team at SMU is the second largest in the entire athletic department behind football.

    TITLE IX

That is why schools in the south have added equestrian teams. Plus, if you are rich enough to compete, you are probably bringing your own horse to school and you are used to paying for the horse’s upkeep yourself, so the scholarships just cover tuition, room, & board.

Huh? My point was only that there was no large conference bidding war for SMU. They were there yesterday and would have been there 2 years from now if the ACC required their services. No aging well about it. BTW, this was a bold and savvy move by SMU and something they had to do and they found a way to do it. Certain risks involved but languishing in the AAC was death.

Who cares.  Harvard has a better academic reputation than Stanford. Nobody is trying to add them to the ACC.  The academics don't matter at all.

Stanford and Cal should form a league with Rice, SMU, Tulane, etc.  Pull in Duke and Georgia Tech eventually when the ACC crumbles.  Be the "smart conference that also cares a little about sports".  Own it.  Stop partnering with the Oregon States of the world.

They’d all love to do that but would also like $38mm a year also if it’s not too much trouble.

Yeah, wasn't his dad a sales manager at a Honda dealership or something.

The national media heard "Texas oil money" and fell for it.

Story I heard way back when was this: Manziel, his sister, mom and dad didn’t have a pot to piss in as you might expect, but an uncle, maybe mom’s brother, hit a nice lick doing something, selling ranches maybe. He gifted each of them $200k or so, (probably to get them off his ass) and that was why manziel was Mr Drinks On Me for the aggy years and where the family money myth began. Of course they all pissed it away which is why dad was back to selling Toyota’s in a few years. Not sure if true but it explains some things.

The same reason that SMU, TCU, Rice, UH, USF, the other USF, UCF, Florida-Something, Pacific University were available for 50 or so years.  "Media market" seems to be more a justification than a cause.

That's the opposite of why a conference would want Stanford though.  They have not been an easy win in football for the last decade; it was somewhat fitting that Shaw went out with another nailbiter win over ND.  But they do have a book of gold medalists and championships in sports that we only see in James Bond flics.

Don’t disagree with much of what you say and no love lost for TCU, but they have been major conference affiliated for 83 of the last 95 years more or less. Hell, they have the same number of top 25 finishes (12) as ND since 2000 and are 3-0 versus Stanford since 2007. Hard to lump them in with those others over the last 25 years.

It comes from one report in one year a few years ago that they were the #1 revenue generating athletic department in the country (specifically for that year). This was in a year when donations went way up for their stadium renovation, they got a loan for the stadium, and they questionably counted a bunch of that as revenue, which pushed them to #1.

Ever since then, they "have more money than the sips" 🙄

Baylor did the same thing when they built the toilet bowl. Ian McCaw booked a one-time donation and bond sale proceeds as general revenue or something. At a glance it looked like they were in UT fundraising territory for the year. Did not know aggy did the same thing. Figures.

As someone who despises the eagles more than any other sports franchise on planet earth, it is annoying. They are clearly a better run organization than the Cowboys. I can’t stand the Jones family.

And no end in site to the generational madness. 75 years from now some Jones with a Habsburg Jaw will be wearing white tube socks and calling the shots at fall training camp.

  8. The scripture by Woody Allen:

One. . . And the Lord made an bet with Satan to test Job’s loyalty and the Lord, for no apparent reason to Job, smote him on the head and again on the ear and pushed him into an thick sauce so as to make Job sticky and vile and then He slew a 10th part of Job’s kine and Job calleth out: “Why doth thou slay my kine? Kine are hard to come by. And Job’s wife saw this she wept and the Lord sent an angel of mercy who anointed her head with a polo mallet and of the 10 plagues, the Lord sent one through six, inclusive, and Job was sore and his wife angry and she rent her garment and then raised the rent but refused to paint.

@NoName this must be the bitchin’ stock advice that Tillman Fertitta needed from Daniel.  https://stocktwits.com/LexusLFA

Fucking figures. AAPL Stocktwit posts full of bluster, talking down to people, lectures about absorbing market pain, now “80%” allocated, “95%” of equity allocated to AAPL, “All in!”.

This would have been the lawn mowing high school days. Idiot probably didn’t have $250 bucks in play if that.

Does aggy still co-brand everything SEC or is that not happening any longer since UT and OU are joining?

The butthurt over there regarding Texas to the SEC is funny on many levels. The sense of betrayal and belief that somehow SEC was going to not take freakin' Texas when presented with that chance is hilarious. The SEC new car smell sure has faded.

The lack of self awareness of Briles when he made that statement was truly mind boggling

Not to get off track but Briles continued to use his catchy little recruiting enticement phrase, "Getcha Some'" 7 days before his termination and as the Baylor internal investigation into multiple assaults ands rapes was raging full force. Dude just didn't get it, ever.
