The rest of Hays County voted to increase funding for education, voting in favor of every bond except the bond to fund a new football stadium.

To be fair, the bond for a new high school did pass in Dripping as well

The libs of Lake Travis ISD won in a sweep 2-0, and now control the school board 4-3. First time in over a decade. I posted more about my experience in that fight in the Texas a failed state thread.

we had significant increase in turnout which was still abysmal. But over 8000 votes which is 1000 more than last election when there was also city council on the ballot (this was just school board and some props).

winning local school board elections is a good sign, I don’t think it means Dems are winning state wide but it does help and could point to less of a defeat in district races.

Didn't happen in Dripping.  A board member whose husband is actively fighting to defund public schools won re-election.

  3. Sorry if these are stupid questions...
If something was ordered and paid for from China in mid March, but hasn't shipped yet, what is the tarrifs on it (and when would that be calculated)?
Is it the tarrif rate at time of purchase? At time of shipping? At time of receipt at the port? And if the rates keep fluctuating, would someone be able to leave a product at the port until the rates dropped again before picking it up (and paying the new rate)?
Another question... Is there a price threshold for tarrifs? It looks like the de minimus rate of $800 goes away on May 2... So small ticket items received (? Shipped?) by then wouldn't have the tarrif applied?

I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn, but I recall reading somewhere that it is applied on arrival. I would interpret that as when it reaches the port. That means we are all fucked.
  4. Hot wheels has sent an order demanding all state workers are to RTO five days a week effective (?)
Should be a blast since many state agencies have downsized to the point that there aren't enough desks for everyone.

Just like at UT. Everyone was to return in August full time. There aren’t enough spaces for everyone, so most administrative people are still only going in 2 or 3 days a week.

  5. The Golden Trump statue bothered me more…

—You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them

And I’m not even in the American (anti)Christian cult…

This, I want to see the evangelicals explain this one. I used to be part of all that shit. Very curious to see how people I know still in that shit react.

I don't pretend to know what things cost in schools, but why is this so expensive? Outside of teacher salaries, the real estate is free/tax free/funded with bonds that aren't ISD dollars. Maintenance shouldn't be insane, the tech/refresh cycle is long enough to not be a huge cost and books etc are also reusable for years on end.

    What eats the budget?

The bonds are paid off with property taxes.  They separate property taxes between M&O and I&S(bond debt service).  Two different buckets that can't be used to pay for the other.  The little funds that the state does give go to M&O.

They aren’t doing a real good job of keeping it quiet.

I hope Drip gets a 2nd high school. I used to compete against them in sports and academic events when they were a much smaller school in my youth. I can still recall in elementary school tying for the gold medal in UIL Spelling. Got a perfect paper and only one other person did the same. Even my principal missed six words. I can also still remember her name and that she beat me the next year when I misspelled trafficking. 😂

We desperately need one.  The High School is already over capacity and they are forecasting that by the time this one opens(if approved) that they will be between 800-1000 students over capacity.  If it opens on time then it will be after my kids are through with school out here.  Still need it and I will still support it.

This school is out in Dripping Springs and the MAGA folks are trying to keep it off all the social media neighborhood groups.  It is especially maddening since DSISD is trying to pass a bond this May for a 2nd high school. The voucher and property taxes are too high folks are making a push to defeat the bond.  It doesn't matter that the state mandates that this is how schools are built and they keep voting those fuckers in for the last 30+ years.
