  1. My grandfather's Navy medals from WWII.
My wife's dad has 2 old grandfather clocks.  One that predates America.  1750s-ish and one that was made in the early 1800s.  The oldest one is English and the younger one is German I believe.  He's got another wall clock that his grandfather bought when he survived WWI.
All three of these are just amazing to look at and to think about what they've seen. Laughs and tears, parties and fights, new babies and wakes and everything in between.
The oldest one just got repaired in the last year so it should be good to go for a while but they're just like old men.  They're grumpy and irascible and sometimes they decide to keep time and sometimes they say fuck off and chime at random times.   I love them.
My wife has 4 siblings so I'm not sure who is going to get what but I haven't been shy about letting everyone know my affection for them and that is be more than willing to cut a bitch if I had to.

Just inherited a grandfather clock myself that was brought back from Germany in the 60s. I have no idea how old it is and it’s not working right now. I have fond memories of my grandfather showing me how it worked when I was a kid. I need to find a place that restores them, but from reviews I read online most people who restore them are hit or miss.

Fuck em. The location near Dripping Springs always smelled like bleach and wet carpet. Terrible service and shit food apart from a few items that they couldn't serve half the time

The Dripping location was terrible.  The only reason they stayed open so long was because it was one of the only options out there.  When all the restaurants started to open across the street they were done.  They closed down almost a year to the day that Hat Creek opened up.  After Hat Creek opened up another 5 or 6 were open within a few months and Trudy's was a ghost town.  I thought I remember seeing that they were trying to sell that property for 8 million, its still for sale a year after it closed.

  3. all bullshit and joking aside.
after harvey, heb rolled into victoria, hours after the storm cleared. they had a mobile pharmacy up and running. tons of free ice. they had at least two mobile kitchens serving 3 meals a day, free. they had a mini grocery store with necessities. HEB beat federal and state relief by almost 7 days.

There was an article about this after it happened. HEB left trailers full of food in strategic locations and flew in drivers via helicopters to get food to the people quicker. The had a contingency plan for natural disaster scenarios and executed it perfectly. They opened stores within a day or so and had workers brought in from other stores. Quality company that cares about its employees and customers.

I picked up D+ last night and decided to watch R1 again.  Fuck that movie is really fucking good.  I know literally no one will agree but I do believe it is better than ROTJ.  I put it only behind IV and V.  I never understood the comments about "well yeah but they had to reshoot and re-edit to get that version blah blah blah" bullshit.  Marcia Lucas ring a bell?  IV was all fucked up until she got a hold of it.  Who gives a shit really, it's the final fucking product that matters.

I agree.  I put it right behind V and IV as the 3rd best in the franchise.

  5. Have a 14-year-old daughter who will be going to HS next year and a son who is about to turn 12. Not sure I could get either to go but seems like this would be poignant for them. Yes?

It’s all my 13 year old boy talked about for months. He’s really involved in the schools theater program, so that may be part of why he knows about it. We are going in December when it’s in town.

Sounds like there is some mature content, so we are not taking our 10 year old. My 13 yr old probably could have handled it at 10, but no way my 10 year old could now.

This is the correct rule. Once it airs, it can be discussed. Just like the GOT threads. Even previews (not that they will have previews for Mando), but it's the only fair way for both parties. If you don't want to be spoiled, don't click on the thread until you've watched the show

Yep, this is not new.  It is not like they are all released at once.

  7. First cold snap of the year means gumbo. Normally I just use oil from the pantry for the roux, but I decided to step up the game and use bacon fat. It did not disappoint!

  8. For those that have signed up - do they give you the option for the Disney/Espn plus/Hulu bundle yet?

I read somewhere that the deal in this thread will not apply to the ESPN/Hulu/Disney package that will be available later. This one is strictly for Disney only.

This was excellent.  It started out at 25 missions, then 30 and finally 35.  I can't imagine what those who were close to being done felt when it got bumped up on them.

My grandfather was a co-pilot on the B-24 and finished all 35 missions.  I have a scan somewhere of all the missions he flew.  Most of them were over Germany, Austria and Italy.  I believe all 35 were flown in ~6 months.

  10. Grew up in that area and went to that store all the time.  Became friends with a girl a few years later who said that she was supposed to go to the shop with one of the younger girls that night but got grounded.  Who knows if it was true, but as a 14 yr old you believe almost anything, especially with all the talk and theories about it.

A lot of people feel like that was a moment in the city when Austin became a big city and you didn't feel safe anymore.
