Since this is the optimism thread, I think that we are actually in a better position after this year’s loss to Maryland than last year’s (cue internal screaming).
Aside from our DBs running into each other and dropping INTs, I think a big part of what let them score 24 points in the first 1.5 quearters was the decision to play Roach at MLB. He’s a great player but was completely out of position. Canada realized it and ran jet sweeps and quick passes to exploit it. I realize we were in a tough spot with the Wheeler, and later Johnson, suspsensions but I’m disappointed that we put ourselves in that position. After we pulled shifted to McCulloch / Wheeler at LB with Foster at joker in the 2nd half, we gave up only 10 points. Eliminate the whiff plays from the DBs and I think the defense could be pretty good.
OL played much better than what we have seen over the past 5+ years. There is actual talent at the RB position. However, this is completely negated when we decide to play Kyle Porter. WR showed big play ability and for the most part we left our best players on the field (novel concept, I know). Ehlinger played OK until the 4Q when he started forcing things.
Brandon Jones did a great job returning punts. Dicker seems like a huge upgrade over Rowland. The New Punter didn’t drop any snaps.
Bottom line:
Defense will be fine once we settle into better personnel groupings.
Offense could be fine if we 1) commit to putting the best players on the field and keeping them there and 2) institute some sort of coherent play calling philosophy.

Miami sucks...who knew?

It has been repeated ad nauseum, but Charlie Strong was a likeable guy and therefore got the benefit of the doubt for a lot of bone headed decisions. Most people ended up agreeing that the responsibilities of managing a program the size of Texas was too much for him, and that he’s much better suited to a place like USF where alumni pressure is a lot lower and you only have to prepare for 2 or 3 really high quality opponents per year.
Tom Herman is the opposite. He a condescending dickhead to the media, presumably to BMD’s, and has a bad habit of turning large numbers of the team against him during the offseason. He digs in his heals defending underperforming assistants and manages to look like a child throwing a temper tantrum in doing so. He plays favorites with players who have never done anything on the field to deserve it. Either he is going to learn to show humility and be willing to admit and correct mistakes or I think he’s on track for an awfully short leash from CDC.

Holy fuck. Our starting QB thinks it's not even an option to throw the ball away or run on 3rd & 10 in the opponents territory with over a minute left. I'm being 100% serious here, there are junior high QB's that know better than that. Did Sam not hear/understand the question or something? What an incredible answer.
Maybe he thinks we are playing in Canada?

Kyle “blitz pickup” Porter was split out to the field side in an empty backfield on 2nd and 10 (play before the final interception). He ran a 5 yard out and dropped a pass that hit him in the hands.
In review:
4th / 5th string RB playing WR and dropping passes on the most important drive of the game.

There was a scoring drive that was extremely efficient in the 2nd quarter where we ran 80% of the time.
That particular drive was effective, difficult to defend and identical to how Herman called plays when he was tOSU coordinator.
If we had done that the whole game, it would’ve given our defense plenty of rest, high amount of possession time and an easy win against a mediocre team.
Unfortunately it’s clear that our goal is to not accomplish intelligent scoring. We often like to throw completely fucking stupid screens, put our young QB in a high probability position of failure, and reward horrible run reads. We certainly aren’t selfish in the sense that we always want to give the other team the ball so they can play offense. We enjoy turnovers, relish in team and indivisible penalties and have absolutely zero desire to call a good game. Fuck. Fuck. Fucking. Fuck.
Who was it who said last year that “sometimes we aren’t even trying to score”? I’m pretty sure it was Beck, right before Herman announced that assistants would no longer hold press conferences.

Tom Herman needs a serious dose of humility or he risks losing the entire fan base and (perhaps the only thing that matters) losing the BMD as well. The only way I see him changing anything is by Del Conte sitting him down and explaining the seriousness of the situation to him.
Next time a reporter asks how offensive playcalling will be handled, he should skip the condescending and insulting tone. Answer the fucking question. “Tim calls plays. I have veto power.” Or “I decided to take over play calling for the rest of the year.”

I won’t believe that the coaching staff is serious about fixing the running game until Kyle Porter is permanently banished to the bench. How long until we start hearing that Keontay Ingram isn’t good at picking up blitzes and has attitude problems?

I mean, some of the defensive woes are explained by losing experienced talent and replacing it with inexperience and possibly less talent.
I mean, no Poona ffs. But the rest of it . . . . .
Malcom Roach at MLB was not good. He needs to be on the DL. Also, McCulloch needs go wrap up when he tackles.

I assume they benched Tim Beck when we went down 24-7?
I can’t help but think that the sudden offensive revival was not Beck’s work.

We can’t even get lined up before the snap...

We’re trying to do too much with scheme on defense. Just play simple, beat them one on one.

Crowd is already dead. Jimbo Fisher era off to a rousing start.

This offense is sooooo boring.

aggy now has two LB

Jets just traded away their best quarterback. And the Saints may have secured Drew Brees’ successor.

No Kyle Porter in the RB depth chart! We are saved.

Texas 31
Maryland 20

Was this the last full scrimmage of preseason or will they do one next week too?

Ossai might end up being one of the most important recruits given the injury / depth situation at LB.

Kirk never bothered to recruit a generational talent to give Greg a rudder for his offense, and certainly didn’t give him a player that provided natural constraint.
If that’s not meddling then I don’t know what is.
Never forget that Greg Davis called C.J. Beathard the “best he’s ever coached.”

How long before Leon is playing DE?

Injuries at any position suck but if there’s one position group that I trust the coaches to figure out, it’s Orlando’s LBs.

I don’t get it...I thought he was already in prison for 50+ years?
9.3.18 Coach Herman press conference (Noon)

It’s a funny tradition. Coaches think that they can somehow trick the fan base by not mentioning the actual problems with our performance. Which just pisses off the fan base more.
