  1. power was out for about 50 hours but been on but for a few short outages since early yesterday morning.  having pressure issues with water now but other than that water has been good the whole time (pressure and hot/cold functioning).  dripping inside and wrapped outside.  if i continue to drip and no other obvious issues bw now and going above freezing for good tomorrow will i make it through unscathed?

tldr if water continues to function are you out of the woods once it gets above freezing (meaning not vulnerable to busting when warming up since you've maintained flow the whole time?)

  2. I’m sorry I snapped. Just stressed out. Thanks to all with suggestions. My concern with turning off gas is that it won’t burn as hot and will be smokier but I will give it a shot. Thanks to all and sorry again. Just a bit on edge with all this bullshit.

Final question then I’ll stop the thread jack. Just turned off gas and fire immediately went to smoldering. Wood is kept in a place that it typically dry but the hell blizzard someone managed to get way under the porch and cover the stack so it’s a bit damp. So options are keep burning hot with gas rod lit or turn off and try and make to to friends’. Thoughts?
  3. My apologies and good luck. Your concern is well-founded.

  4. . . . not sure if serious . . .

Fuck you bitch yes I’m fucking serious. This is an incredibly stressful situation and I’m weighing keeping my family here for the night sitting in a room that seems like it’s getting more and more smoke in it or losing them up and trying to get to friends which is also very dangerous as we’re in a hilly neighborhood. In normal times if I feel like smoke is coming back in the house we’d just open windows turn on fans not camp in front of the fire etc. none of this are options now. Fuck you and your lame ass tired unhelpful response.

  5. Make sure your chimney flue is open, and turn the gas off after the wood gets going.

Flue is open and have been burning a fire since Sunday night. Just feels like the smoke as gotten progressively more present inside the living room in the past few hours. We typically don’t sit in the same room for hours and hours with a roaring fire so just paranoid.
  6. I have a fire place with a rod across the bottom. Turn the gas on light the gas coming g out of pipe. Burn wood. I’m (1) concerned it seems to be getting a bit smoky in our living room and (2) worrried about us being right in front of fire place for hours at a time while that propane is blasting through that pipe and burning the wood. Any thoughts / help on those issues? Does it merit leaving house trying to get to friends?

  7. Well, it’s ranging from 39-41 inside the house. Rough nights sleep in front of the fire, lots of blankets. Animals even got under the covers. They never do that. They are cold and miserable.

My daughters fish tanks some stairs died. All of em. She’s gonna be sad. Well tell her later.

We can’t keep this up. We’re going to shut down here. Turn off the water, drain all the pipes. Putting frozen jugs of water in the fridge to keep things cool.

If my old 4x4 will make It up the hill, we’re heading to my parents. They still have power, and their gad fireplaces actually can keep their house warm even if they lose it.

This is beyond bad. People are going to die. I have a long rant about our profit first, profit only deregulated market, and what it has now cost us, but I’ll save that for later.

For now, this is a life safety event. I’m worried about people and pets making it through the week. You need to start thinking in those terms. Do what you can to protect your property, but things can be replaced. Lives can’t. And with freezing rain coming, you’re going to be stuck wherever you are. So make it someplace you can survive.

Good luck. Going to start shutting things down. I’ll check back in later.

basically our situation. Gonna wait until warmest part of the day and try and 4WD it out of the hills and get to friends place. I’m more pissed / feel more helpless than I’ve ever been but then think about so many out there less fortunate who are truly facing life death situations. Just an amazing breakdown on so many levels.
  8. Going on hour 28 with no power in Barton hills. We all slept on floor in living room in front of fire but with these shitty original construction windows it can't be much above freezing in this house if at all. Down to barely any power on phone again but will go charge in car in a bit. No internet. No hot spot. No computer power. Neighbor tried twice to get out yesterday and just slid back down hill so stuck here. No telling how many across Texas died last night. Maddening. People need to go to jail for this.

  9. I don't see any way to keep these fuckers from freezing. Last night I found two covers at the store when looking for pool noodles and also got some rubber pipe insulation. Went out freezing my ass off and rewrapped them this time with the rubber insulation then covered with the new covers then wrapped that and duct taped it all sealed. That shit is still gonna freeze. I wonder if we should open the valve just a bit to relieve pressure and when it thaws the water has somewhere to go.

Think I’m going hand-warmer, noodle, towels, plastic bag, tape and just hide and watch.
  10. Yeah, if you're pinched, grab some pool noodles - you can use those to make layers of insulation.

I’m using noodles. I have some hand warmers from skiing. Would putting a few of those inside the noodles make a difference?

Also I feel like I’ve seen conflicting theories on outside water spigots. Drip them or don’t drip them?

@Brisketexan and others mentioned heat tape.  Do I need to be running up to HD to make that happen?  Y'all just wrapping the outdoor faucets with the tape? Makes a lot of sense.  I have frost proof faucets but having that heat radiate up into the pipes in the wall seems like it woudl be good as they all have long runs against exterior walls.

Related question -- what exactly is heat tape?  Can someone provide a link to HD or somewhere that shows a specific product?  i see something called Frost King Pipe Wrap Insulation Tape...that what we're talking about here?

  12. We're in South Austin and it's almost freezing now but doesn't look like it's going to get much below 31 or so until Friday night.  Does it make sense to cover outside faucets/pipes, drip interior faucets now or does that probably not need to happen until we get down into the 20's tomorrow night?  i typically don't do anything if it's just a light freeze for a few hours.  was planning on waiting until tomorrow

Took my mom to the City of Houston drive through site at Delmar Stadium today. Couldn’t have been easier. In and out in 30 minutes. Never left the seat of my car. Quite pleased.

Bernard how did you get her signed up?  We're in Austin but willing to travel.  Thanks for any info you can provide.

    how old are you?

when you registered did you say you had insurance?

if under 65 and you said yes you might as well call HEB and check the dashboard that shows other types of locations that have some.

if over 65 but have insurance you might call APH, if you can.

yes under 65 and did say i had insurance.  i'll start calling around too.  thanks

  15. I pre-registered through APH a week or so ago but haven't heard anything.  i haven't had time to read through last several pages but is consensus that it makes sense to start calling HEB's again and see if they have any and you can get a slot?

  16. I'm in 1B and just registered via APH so now I guess I just wait for them to contact me to set up appointment?  Anyone have any experience on how long it takes from registering to getting contacted to make an appointment?  I don't understand why they took it out of HEB's hands.  Seems like a lot more folks were getting shots when they were involved and now all I read about is appointment cancellation, long lines, etc.

  17. Couldn't pass up a chance to play in a rare snow.

I don’t know anything about photography but enjoy this thread. Help me understand what you’re doing with that mannequin in all of your pics. Is it a subtle lighting thing or some other technique type thing?

  18. CVS and Walgreens are dosing nursing home residents like crazy right now. That’s why they state that the don’t have them when people call. They’re getting a lot and dosing on schedule, just not done with their obligations yet.

Yes my grandmother and everyone at her facility got it yesterday afternoon via cvs pharmacist that came onsite. My mom and dad were there visiting (they wheel gm out on the porch to visit from a distance) and the owner offered them 2 extra they had left over so they got dosed too. CVS guy said meet him back there on x day for shot 2.

  20. Do either of your parent's have a history of allergic reactions to vax, drugs, or foods?  If not, they should take whatever is first available imo, esp if they are at high risk.

Thank you. Dad no. Mother has a shellfish allergy. Maybe that was the issue. I told them to both get proactive about getting on lists and dual trac that with reaching out to allergy doc.
