A Seattle couple have been identified as the people killed in a shooting last weekend at the Gorge Amphitheatre.

Brandy Escamilla, 29, and Josilyn Ruiz, 26, died from gunshot wounds suffered Saturday during the popular Beyond Wonderland electronic dance music festival at the Central Washington venue, said Grant County coroner Craig Morrison. Their deaths were ruled homicides.

The pair were engaged to be married, according to a GoFundMe page Ruiz’s family organized to raise money for funeral costs, bring Ruiz’s belongings back to them in California and help with other unexpected costs.

Ruiz was shot in the torso and Escamilla was shot in the head, Boyle said.

“What we believe is there was a domestic violence situation going on between the shooter and someone else and that Josilyn stepped in to help the victim,” Boyle said.

  2. I remembered the story about Greta Van uh, T blasting him on Twitter and him getting busted.  But it took some time to recall.  Then I completely forgot who he was again, and still don't quite understand how he has a following at all.  I guess being out of touch and old isn't always a bad thing.

I may actually be losing my mind.  I can’t sit inside all day.  I need things to do outdoors.  I’m going to try and hit natural bridge caverns soon. And Barton springs.  Other suggestions?

As you know I left in 2019 for Oregon.  And no, not going to post my weather forecast.  But my last few years in ATX I enjoyed visiting this place in Wimberly:

  4. I read Blood Meridian and No Country For Old Men.  My challenge in reading Blood Meridian wasn't the violence, but instead what I would call the 'thickness' of it.  Very dense, many words I could not find in a dictionary and the whole punctuation thing.  It was obviously great, but it was a challenging read and I was releived when I was finished with it.   He wouldn't make my personal list of favorite authors.  But I recognize his greatness and his skilll.   RIP.

Apollo is shuttering on 6/30 and as soon as old.reddit gets shitcanned, I'm out.

Pretty much this.  Been using Apollo for what feels like a long time, sad to see it go.   Been on reddit a long time, and kept trimming down the subreddits I follow to basically hobbies, dad jokes, and some regional subreddits.   That stated, I've been feeling like for some time it has been something I needed to basically quit wasting time on.

However, I find some of the best 'how to' and adivce/reviews on products is typically found searching reddit.  Will miss that.

During all the talk of the API issue this article by Cory Doctorow got posted a few times:

It is a long but good read on why everything internet related goes to shit eventually.

Meh, asshole made it to 93, just proves there’s no god or decency in this world that he got to live that long in comfort off the back or marginalized people who he stuck his army of hateful Christian’s against.

This.  Died a rich old man.  Probably left a large inheritance.

FYI, I left the trail after about 300 miles.  Many reasons.  It was an amazing adventure, but a thru hike doesn't align with my values, so I'm making my goal a multi-year section hike.  Planning on going back in July to meet up with a couple of my hiking buds, probably in NorCal.

Well, shit.   Let me know which year you cover some central Oregon....

I’ve taken care of many over the years who have done themselves and others serious harm up to and including death. Risk of causing MVA goes up significantly above age 75, and the severity of the wrecks goes up as well. I have no doubt it is a nonlinear increase the older you go above 75, but none of the studies I’ve seen break it down further, though with the aging of the population I’m sure they will eventually.

Man, I'm only 53 but I am perfectly good with the government providing me a driver when I get even older.  I have heard some countries give folks nannies for the first year of child birth, so I guess I missed out on that.    Also, I will most likely hit the driver in the shins with my cane and yell "Faster, I'm running out of time!" a few times, so I hope that's OK.  Just don't make me take the bus like a damn peasant.

Just revisited this for some reason.  I'm not saying we were peaking as a society at this moment.  But things were pretty, pretty, pretty good by comparison.  This video mated so perfectly with the song.  Just great.  I can't say it's my favorite track (nor my kids' favorite track), but I feel like I need to make sure they've seen it.  And the performance at the VMAs was sick sick sick!

Related, I just watched this Vice show on Spike Jonze.  It is mainly from a skateboarding perspective, but they touch briefly on the sabotage video (and a skate video that was almost the same):

  12. Wow.  Had no real idea about him other than his postings.  I have enjoyed reading some of the writing posted in this thread.  Regret I come to it so late.   It is of course a cliche, but  I  envy those who get to live on with the great work they leave behind for us as all.  From the article on his mother it appears he and I share the same birth month and year.   When I one day transition into cosmic dust I won't leave behind works that others will know me by.  Not that this is any less tragic, but maybe there is comfort for those who know and love him in that his voice will be around for longer than many of our voices.

Rest easy MAC, and sorry to all who know him personally.
