    No, he hates winning.

For fucks sake, none of our revenue coaches has had a fireable tenure yet except probably Shaka last year, and its not like our donors love splashing cash on basketball, especially with new arena fundraising going on. That should get rectified this year, and if Pierce and Herman have meh years they'll be gone too, and we can really judge CDC's hiring bona fides.

The guy's done his job on a foundational level (which UT has lacked for years), now we'll see how he does on an HR/program management level.

Shaka is a probably?  Uh....no. He’s definitely in need of firing. 4 years and zero tournament wins. That’s fucking pathetic.  Losing conference records too.

Pierce finished last on the b12 last year. He’s on the hot seat.

Because Marisnick is a FA after the season, and the Astros got something of value for trading him. While Corona and Taylor may never do anything with the Astros, it was worth taking a chance on 12 years of control on a 19 year OF coming off a .868 OPS and a pitcher that likely will be in the bullpen at some point this season.

Depending on the contract Pence gets, he might be cheaper than Jake anyway. Plus the Astros have a defensive CF in Straw that is perhaps just as good.

well...that's like, your opinion, man.  Ha.  I forgot about Jake being a FA.  Good call and refutation of my idiocy.

Huh? How would Pence fit on this roster? They need to be getting rid of a veteran OF (Reddick), not adding more...

agree.  if you're going to sign an aging Pence why not just keep Marisnick?  Jake was cheaper.  Pence can actually hit, but still, he's past his prime despite having a great year last year.  I personally like Pence a ton too.  Great guy off the field.  just not sure this makes much sense.

You know, I almost typed that exact same thing yesterday along the lines of I have never considered Tesla since they can't turn.  Then, I looked and it destroyed the Taycan at the ring which surprised the shit out of me.  I didn't research why/how in case there are other variables.  Was just pretty surprised.

that's because they used a stripped out car geared toward beating it at the ring, and not a production car like Porsche used.  NIssan did the same thing with the GTR against a 911TT back in the day.

Very happy.  I hope he forgets that bullpenning nonsense.

why?  it allowed a team with substandard payroll to maximize their talent pool to compete with teams they had no business beating.  the goal is to win.  it doesn't matter if you do that conventionally or not.  he found a way to win.  period.  he likely won't have to use that in Houston in the near term, but if it helps win a game that is needed to clinch a division, alds, alcs, etc then you use it.

The first and foremost advantage is the Porsche actually looks nice.  I still can't stand any of the Tesla models.  Bland boring shit.

my bigger issues with tesla has always been the interior bits are straight fucking garbage.  performance is incredible.  looks are okay on the model s.  the others look terrible to me, but clearly I can get beyond awkward aesthetics if there are other mitigating factors (2016 Panamera GTS owner).  At the moment it appears tesla may have the taycan beat on straight line performance, but not on track times.  I know, who in the heck would be taking these cars to a track anyway.  However, I know 100% the Porsche interior quality, construction, longevity is going to boat race the tesla, and it does look a ton better.  anyway, it definitely has my attention.

Never liked Tito’s. People look at me like I’m crazy when I say that. Not gonna talk shit about it. Just don’t like it.

    Is that wrong?

no.  and I agree.  think it's cool a texas vodka and business is doing so well.  I simply do not like the taste of it.

  8. looking ahead, they damn well better make hay this year because the next 5-7 is likely going to suck, and the man who could have actually navigate the hurdles was, IMO, wrongfully fired.  They're going to have to replace Springer, Correa, Verlander, Brantley, Reddick, Gurriel, and Grienke all in the next 2 seasons while having no first or second round picks the next two years.  They will be forced to trade correa this season or next, or receive nothing for him.  they won't even get the compensatory pick when he leaves via free agency as that was also included as part of their punishment.  And you wonder why they have been unable to hire a GM.  Nobody wants to take on that challenge.  Nobody.

they say it competes with Tesla but it's pushing 50% more expensive.  I guess some folks slum it in their model S ludicrous mode.  that Porsche is pushing $200K - so maybe it competes with the yet to be built roadster.  crazy times.

That is the "turbo" and "turbo s" models.  you can get the 4S model in low 100's.  im not really an electric car guy, but this one has certainly captured my interest.  I will give it a close look the next time I am in the market for a sedan.

wasn't it springer that didn't even like the advanced scouting?  he just liked to see ball hit ball?

can't imagine the trash can getting in his head was a good thing.

I am guessing he was locked in enough it likely didn't even register with him.  I know there is zero shot I would have been able to hear any of it as I would get so focused on the pitcher I didn't hear anything, not even my manager yelling at me.  once I stepped in the box I had no room for distraction.  it was all about trying to pick up the pitch and determine backspin or sidespin in a few hundredths of a second.

In my opinion, hiring Dusty for a year reflects management/ownership belief that the players are in place to win, and Dusty will keep the players happy. Positive PR and a belief that he can’t fuck it up.

I personally agree with pepper here - sure seems like an abandonment of philosophy. Surely there was a balance between good analytics and “win at all costs”. Dusty is fine, but not great and he’s frustratingly stubborn

it's going to look really bad if/when they fire him after one year too.  First thing the media is going to do is say it's because he's old/black.  that won't be true, but they will say it, and then bring up the Taubman stuff and bag on how the astros are the devil again.  and to be clear, I like dusty baker a lot as a manager.  i'd personally love to play for a calm, old school players coach like him.  I simply think this is not a good fit for this organization.

  12. to further the analysis we would need to analyze the efficacy of the banging.  What was the result on the pitches where there was a bang.  not that it changes anything.  I would simply find it interesting.  I want to know how effective their cheating was.

Ok baker isn’t that bad of a hire. They interviewed bannister and ausmus and neither of them would have been a better hire than dusty baker. Did we ever “officially” interview bochy? I saw a rumor we did but nothing official that it every took place.

ausmus is at least an analytics guy and a decent bridge hire for now.  I like Dusty Baker, he's just a horrible fit for this organization, or at least, for what the organization has been.

Is this some sort of self imposed punishment?  Serious WTF hire...

seriously.  it's unreal.  They should just hire one of Luhnow's protégés who has moved up within the ranks either within the astros org or another one, hire a manager similar to Hinch who is well versed in using the analytics.  The astros are built on the front office and team being a cohesive unit.  Dusty is not the guy to keep that bridge in tact.  Virtually every team in the league is now a data driven organization, and it appears the astros are choosing to bomb themselves back into the stone ages.  This will not end well.  Enjoy this season, Astros.  The party is over.  there are a few songs left, but all the hot chicks have left the dance.

  16. his handling of pitching and the fact that the game, like it or not, is now analytics driven no matter how "old school" you are.  The Astros fired guys and paid their fine.  Outside that they should make zero changed to organizational philosophy.  Promote the best of Luhnow's guys or go hire one of his guys who has moved up within the ranks at another organization, hire a younger analytics driven manager, and keep the train on the tracks.  Just do it without using enhanced sign stealing.
