By the way, first trip to Kentucky. Castle & Key is far and away the best distillery tour that we took. It’s fairly new...they are aging their bourbon, but only produce gin and vodka currently. Look them up if you don’t know their story. On top of all of their bad assery, they have the first female master distiller in the history of bourbon production.

Thanks for the responses.  Although many of you are suggesting I run from hole to hole, my plan was to bring my own cart and just drive.  It'll keep me off my feet and give me a place to put my cooler, phone, metal chair, and air horn.

My plan for walking the course was to follow the first group from 1-18 just to see every hole, then head to 16 since that is my favorite hole from a spectator stand point.  My favorite hole on the course is 13 but you're so damn far from the green that I don't think I'll want to spend much time there.

I actually only got tickets for Sunday, but I'll be arriving in Augusta on Friday.  Where are the best bars and/or places to watch on Saturday?

Believe it or not, Hooters isn't a bad spot to hang out.  Usually John Daly is posted up in the parking lot selling "grip it and rip it" merch.  It's a lively atmosphere and they bring in a shit-ton of extra staff, so getting  a beer isn't too hard.

Can't wait to hear about it

  3. You might have some airbnb luck out at lake oconee.

Get there early, park at one of the churches across form the gate, (it's like a $20 donation or so).

Make sure to eat each of the following:

    pimento cheese sandwich

    chick salad sandiwch

    ham and cheese

    peach ice cream cookie sandwich

Usually the "domestic light beer" is miller light, the "craft beer" is blue moon and the "import beer" is dos XX.

After you have walked the entire course, my favorite place to sit is on the hill above 16.  You can see 6 green, 15 green and all of 16 from there.

PS. They also love it when you yell "dilly dilly" after a golfer's shot

  4. Went to Telluride with the fam last week, possibly the best conditions I’ve ever had.
Obligatory stop at Gorrono Ranch on our only bluebird day:

Here’s the snow report the day we left, a lot of locals said they don’t remember the last time they had a 100”+ base in the spring:

It snowed off and on the whole time we were there (Saturday - Friday) and pretty much constantly from Tuesday night to Thursday morning. We got fresh tracks Thursday morning in powder that was up to my shins, I’ll never forget those runs.

  5. Wow, thanks for all the information.  This is a great resource.  Here is a quick rundown of my situation:

I've had the Chase SWA Plus Business card for nearly a decade and have earned a companion pass with my spending for the last 6 or so years.  This has been my "primary" card and I used to put pretty much everything on it (to make sure I got to the companion bonus).

I also have carried what is now the Hilton Ascend card for about 7 years and used it when staying at Hilton properties and when I met my Companion Pass threshold each year.

The card I recently got is the Chase Sapphire Preferred (sorry for the confusion), but Thunder was very clear when that card should be used.  Since I got it, I have put every single meal I've eaten on it (including fast food) and will continue to do so.

I think I'm up to 2/24 at the moment.  Between the CSP and the fact that I applied for a chase card for one of my business entities and due to a technicality (they didn't like that the mailing address and physical address were different), I never finished that application, but I know they ran my credit so I assume that counts toward my 5/24.  That leaves me 3/24.  Also, I didn't think about doing my wife's cards separate, so I will do that from now on.  I did the CSP as a join application, but will make sure to use her remaining 4/24 wisely.

Lastly, on the travel, the goal is to get Business or First class going East and Business/Premium Economy coming West, being what every I can afford.

    Follow up questions:

Can I get multiple small business cards?  I have a couple more business entities that don't have case cards attached to them, so could I get multiple 80k bonuses?

Since my wife it co-owner of several of the business entities, do you guys know if they will flag it if I have her separately apply for a business card for the same entities for which I have a business card?

  6. I know this has been covered, but can I get some cliff's notes on how to maximize the CSR benefits?  I signed up for CSP in the last couple of months and have received my 50K point bonus.  In the last couple of pages I saw a couple of references to maximizing value by also having a companion card like the Chase ink business, what's the deal there?

My goal is to pay for a chunk (or hopefully all) of my airfare for 2 to France/Spain in June of 2020

    TIA

Update. Went ahead and did the $39/month on Fly8MA.  Cancelable at any time.  With this, you get more Ground School lessons and they give you the endorsement for the written exam once done.  Free access didnt.  Shouldn't take me more than 4-6 weeks to get through, then I can cancel.  Seems like a good deal and a good way to supplement with the PHAK and other material.  Flying blind here, pardon the pun.

I know I'm late to the game here.  But I did King for my PPL, but couldn't stand to look at Martha any longer so I'm doing Sporty's for my instrument, it can get dull, but I like the no frills approach.  Just the info you need, no dumb "jokes"

Also, The ASA Oral Exam Guide was huge for my oral exam, It's also a great review for all the info you need on the written.

anyone know who owns the private jet that has longhorns and a backwards flying texas flag on the tail that's parked in aspen occasionally?

If it's a King Air B200 it's probably Don Evans.  It has a decal under the pilot's window that says "Bevo Air"

I know he has a place in Aspen

Does @Horn21 live out in Midland as well?

No, he's still living the good life down in Austin.  I'm the dumbass that moved out to West Texas.

  11. Just got an email offer to upgrade my Hilton Honors Ascend Amex to the Hilton Honors Aspire Amex card.

The annual fee for the upgrade is $450 whereas the card I have now is $95.  The upgrade includes a free weekend night cert plus 150,000 points if I spend $4,000K on the card in the first 3 months.  Also it gets me Diamond Status at Hilton properties as well as "Priority Pass Select" airport lounge membership.  Does anyone know what that is? Is it worth a damn? Should I do this?  I've never paid an annual fee of this size on a card before but the perks seem pretty legit, also there are some airline fee credits($250/year) and statement credits for charges at Hilton properties ($250)  being offered.

  12. Well I done messed up.

I went ahead and got a CSR card, it came in the mail over the weekend.  Sounds like I should have gone amex first, then immediately gotten the CSR card.  I guess I can get the amex on the back end of the 5/24 period and it will accomplish the same thing.  Like apply for the amex right before I apply for my last Chase card?

Here's my background, I've carried and heavily used the Southwest Business chase card for damn near a decade, earning a companion pass with it for each of the last 5 years.  Last year though, I earned my 2019 companion pass in July of 2018 and continued to use the southwest card for the rest of the year.  If I had been thinking, I could have earned points for another system for the last 5 months of the year.  I also carry an Amex Hilton card (used to be citi before the switch).  I only use that card when I need to hide a purchase form the wife or if we stay in a Hilton though.

I'm working on a Europe trip for June of 2020 and am trying to rack up points to hopefully get us both there and back on Business Class.  I have a couple of business entities, so I should be able to grab up a couple of business cards to go with the Sapphire card I just got and maybe the Amex Platinum that I plan to get.

Do you savvy points travelers think I have a chance of getting enough points to make my wish come true next year?  Any range on what I should expect to earn points-wise in order to make it happen?

  13. Recently got my results back.  I've read and seen enough to basically ignore "shocking" ancestry "news" that may arise from the tests.  My wasn't shocking at all 99.8% Norther Europe, which is what I expected.

What was interesting is the 12.5% match with a total stranger.  Turns out I have a cousin out here I didn't know about.  So either, I have an aunt or uncle I don't know about or one of my aunts or uncles had a kid I don't know about.

I'm not really worried about big government conspiracy thing.  I figure they already have my DNA anyway.

On the insurance side, I figure it swings both ways, I found out I DON'T have a bunch of genes for genetic diseases/cancers.  I plan to use this information to ensure that I'm placed in the lowest-risk category if I go to buy more insurance. (I liken this to those promotions that say if you can run an 8 min mile you can get cheaper insurance)

  14. Going to Vegas with two other couples at the end of Feb.  I'm sad to see the poor review for Catch on the previous page was corroborated by poor Yelp reviews.   I was pretty excited about it based on the description I read.   We are staying at Vdara so walking across to Aria is very easy.

Anyone have first hand experience with Rose.Rabbit.Lie?  Thoughts?  I was thinking it might be fun to do dinner there then catch the Absinthe-esque show "Opium" afterward.

Also going to be playing Shadow Creek for the first time.  Any insider info on that? Must dos? Things to avoid?

    TIA

Anyone want a new 1966-77 Ford Bronco? Only cost you 100k+

    https://www.autoblog.com/2018/12/07/1966-ford-bronco-gateway/

I visited their facility yesterday with a guy I know is currently having one built.  It was really impressive.  There are a lot of restoration and resto-mods going on there, but they showed me the half built version of the very first "new" old bronco.  It's a total beast.  Apparently Ford has let them license the Carroll Shelby name and badging for it. The version I saw was a 5.0L Coyote motor with a Shelby/Whipple Super charger that is slated to put out 835hp at the wheels.  it was mated to a 6 speed raptor transmission.  It had king suspension (which I'm told was designed for stability at highway speeds, but still provide a fair amount of travel off-road.  Long story short.  If I won the powerball, I'd have to get one.

Edit to say that unfortunately Pics were not a possibility.

We are a club, not a school.  Contract is between CFI and student, so we get $0 from the transaction.  $50 or $60 cash is the typical going rate in the area.

Shreveport to KTXK is a bit of a haul for somebody, around 70 miles each way.  They would want to line up 4 or 5 hours to make it worthwhile and thats tough to do.

Here in West Texas the going rate is $75 to $85/hour cash straight to the instructor.  Of course, there is pretty much across the board price inflation on everything out here with all the increased oil & gas activity.

The guy who runs the school will graduate a new CFI and they will immediately begin instructing until their hours get high enough for them to get a corporate job as a SIC.  Then they either leave or cut their instruction hours way back to accommodate the "day job."  Long story short, it's a revolving door of instructors out here, but there do seem to be ample (rotating) supply, due to the high-ish rates they can command.

Wrong. He’s moving at the same velocity when he jumps as the elevator.  So both the elevator and the guy begin at the same constant velocity.  His jump parts the same initial acceleration upwards followed by gravitational acceleration towards the center of the earth as if he was jumping from a non moving surface. V zero is just zero in that case.

I stand corrected ... back to the lols

  19. On the elevator thing, it does appear that the elevator was moving at a constant velocity, but it still screwed him.  If he were flipping on the ground he might have been fine.  But while he was in the air, the elevator continued to move toward him.  It's the equivalent of him trying to do a flip onto an elevated platform.

We're all glad we got to see him try it, but his spine is not so glad.
