Also, in reading that write-up from Nahlin and GH, you guys are too gun shy. A solid year with a new staff full of good recruiters should have Texas well inside a top 10 class, even with ATM probably landing a top 2-3 class.

A&M is not landing a top 2-3 class. Don't see it happening. I'll be happy to have another top-10 finish but likely in the 5 to 10 range and closer to 10 than 5.

Bama, tOSU, Clemson...even GA and LSU... still with momentum. And then tack on OU (who took a smaller class in 2021), UT (new coach smell), UNC (yellatooth), Oregon, ND.

But mostly, nobody is catching Bama, tOSU, GA/Clemson at least for another year, IMO.

You guys will do very well, no doubt.

What's the thought on him bailing on spring practice for no apparent reason?

Not ideal; but if he is all that, he will make up for the missed time by showing off in Fall practice. Jimbo needs the RB spot to also deal with the pass rush, at the least by chipping the on-rusher and then being the outlet pass for the QB. LJ better be able to at least catch the ball nearly every single time and be in rhythm with the QB1, whoever that may be.  Assumption going into next season is that the running game is going to have to be the one lifting the team to Ws; QB may be more of a game manager...but that means, you better protect that QB especially since the OL might not be gelled up totally and the pass pro will need the RB too...

basically, it would seem that's a lot to learn. And it's not like the RB room is empty before LJ steps foot on campus. He will have to earn his playing time.  But if he is as good as his rating/stars tell us he is, then he may be alright.

Thankfully, Spiller is still going to be the lead back.

  3. Joey Freshwater starting to assemble pieces on that threadbare D.  Not sure if it'll be enough for the coming season but setting up for a good run in year 3, I imagine.  Defections, injuries, etc notwithstanding.

Malone, like LJ, was a luxury target for Jimbo, especially with two starting seniors on the DL coming back for one more season and having quality depth already-- to the point of switching one of the DLs to OL.

It's more important to starve the opposition of gamechanging talent, and that's where Malone to Ole Miss might hurt.

Then again, do you want a one-off high caliber guy go to a place like Ole Miss and basically play his heart out but likely not win much... or would you rather see such guys keep going to stacked teams, where too their individual contribution may not be much but they become a part of increasing the gap between the cream of the crop bluechip teams and the rest.

That would be a hell of a kickstarter to their 2023 class and give them some presence in the DFW area.

Who needs presence in north texas when you have presence in north jersey?

    Just kidding! ;)😂

Just looked at the 55 "prospects" offered and love the hustle of the defensive coaches based on offers handed out...north jersey or north texas, if there's a big DL or LB or DB, they're getting offered. WR, TE...not so much.

I hadn't realized Perkins was up to a composite 5 star. Shitballs.

yeah. that's why i wrote that landing Perkins (and Harris) would be a coup for A&M. seems unlikely from the get-go, based on past results trying to recruit 5-star linebackers and DBs.

It's Dewberry, Perkins and Taylor if anything happens fast. There was a shit ton of chatter about it happening between TH-Sun, so it might not be happening. Not saying the other guys aren't possibilities for ATM, but hope that helps.

I keep forgetting about Bobby Taylor.

There was talk about him and people giving crystal ball picks on that name back before the new year rolled, and he seemed like an early target since Jimbo seems to really get things into gear for a class in the January/Feb timeframe, after wrapping up the previous season and bowl game plus the early and second recruiting periods for the incoming class.

Bobby Taylor hopefully is a true corner and not yet another safety masquerading or being projected as a cover guy.

    3 more? Which 3?

The names I've seen mentioned are Harold Perkins, Denver Harris, Kam Dewberry, Bear Alexander, Kelvin Banks. Yes, that's more than 3, I know.

Perkins, Harris, and Banks (sounds like a law firm, eh?) seem friends with the ones who already committed to A&M. But there are so many examples each year where "package deals" especially ones with multiple players, almost never come true. Those are more like wish lists. But it helps to have committed players happily, openly recruiting the others to come join them. Landing Perkins and Harris would be a coup, no doubt.

I'm interested in understanding what ATM's WR  numbers look like if Jalen Preston hits the portal and Demond Demas pulls a full-blown Lynn McGruder Maneuver and disappears accordingly. How deep are they and what is expected in their 2022 WR class? Shit, I didn't even realize that Dylan Wright threw down the smoke bomb and disappeared from their program. That sure was money well spent.

Took plenty of numbers in the previous class; 5 of them. And only one saw any meaningful playing time-- and it was Chase Lane, who was a high 3-star.

Blue collar receivers who are willing to block, run crisp routes-- often not the fun ones but the shorter ones such as curls and come backs, get yards after catch, learn the playbook-- basically, good team players with heart and mind for the game...those guys might get playing time. Yeah, Dylan Wright already shipped out. Kam Brown was expected to show but likely doesn't have patience to ride the pine so he is gone to SoCal (UCLA, I think). Still got Demas and Muhammad-- and Muhammad might be the actual jewel, since he is the son of the NFL player turned private equity investor and a real straight up dude... likely trained his kid to keep his nose to the grindstone and just work.

Not sure whether the inability to stretch the field was an outcome of Mond's skill set or the playbook being what it is. With a new QB, potentially a slinger, maybe the WR playbook opens up a bit further-- guys like Caleb Chapman will be the beneficiary.

TE spot will vulture plenty of passing plays and passing TDs in Jimbo's offense, and a WR just has to be ok with that, so long as they get to eat as well. Which likely means there won't be a surfeit of WR highlights.  But hopefully plenty of talent still on campus for 3 to 4 of them to step up, and at least 2 to make NFL.  Cam Buckley can be that guy in the 2022 nfl draft-- the dude is gritty and talented and hasn't let injury kill his spirit. Ainias Smith if he plays mostly slot and is seen as that by NFL scouts after his junior year this coming season. And Wydermeyer out of TE spot if he declares after his junior year.

A&M should win it in the sense that he's a Cy Fair kid, A&M just showed this season that he's the perfect fit for Spiller's role, and A&M just finished in the top five.

Sure A&M took four RBs last cycle because Jimbo loves unbalanced classes, but it's basically three spares and an all purpose back in Achane, while Bijan is one class above LJ and Roschon likely is a five year guy

Y'all landed Hayden Conner out of Katy just in this class, so the whole "feeder school" doesn't work all the time. He held A&M offer, but loved UT, it's his dream school, and loves that aerospace engineering department in Austin. Best wishes to him, seems like an awesome kid.

will come down to personal choice, vibe, etc.

either case, "no love lost" kinda thing, in 'cruit-speak. :D

he's saying that once the school and the recruit reach a certain point on the bag man stuff, they reach a point of no return where failure to stick to the deal would be catastrophic for both sides.  They are locked in because the school doesn't want sanctions and the player doesn't want to be ineligible and lose their shot at the NFL.  It is the Mutual in Mutual Assured Destruction.  So CTJ is not saying he expect recruiting violations out of College Station.  He IS saying that A&M is making moves to get into a mutually assured destruction place with numerous recruits - in essence locking them out of UT's class by making it impossible for a flip.  These recruit would, in effect, become immune to UT recruiting efforts.  It is a savvy move on A&M's part, as UT's operation has not had a chance to get up and running.  If you can take several high value kids out of action, now is the best time to do it.  UT is no doubt trying to convince the kids it is in their best interest to wait - competition for your services is a good thing - while A&M is saying now is the best the deal will ever get and if you don't jump in now you will never recoup.

I mean, if (haha "if"... as if there is any doubt anymore) bags of cash are being exchanged then that's not anything new, right? But this would affect, say, high 3-stars and low 4-stars.

The top flight talent can afford to wait and pick their school; plus, not immediately signing up with one school or another means that you start to become a scarcer commodity even as other recruits of same/similar caliber start to settle up with whichever school.  just see the situation with LJ... he almost has a super premium tag now because he is practically the only blue chip at his position yet to decide.

The two commits to A&M today were honestly not a big deal one way or another for UT's class; your future is still lined with studs that are UT leans and/or can be convinced to sign with Sark based on his scheme, Austin, the whole package.

A&M's being relevant (even if for just a moment) probably impacts recruiting at out of state schools targeting Texas talent. UT can and will land more than enough numbers and quality, especially with the coaching regime change vibe but even without it.

Guess I'm still thinking in terms of Occam's Razor with regard to recent recruiting updates.

I agree, and it remains to be seen what effect the Name, Image, and Likeness rules will have on school leverage, as players will be able to be paid in the open now.  I suspect the desirability to enter into arrangements where schools have coercive power over you will wane if you could just go the NIL route.

But I have no idea.  I'm just some guy, and an idiot at that.

    username checks out.

LJ would be a nice fuck you to A&M, considering this is a recruitment they should win easily all things considered

I think with RB depth, not to mention having taken a low 4-star RB out of Florida in this class already, LJ will be a luxury that Jimbo is still pushing hard to have, but wouldn't be a huge loss...unlike in years past, when previous A&M corching regimes put all their 'cruiting eggs in one basket and that never panned out.

Also consider it from the other perspective: LJ's heart has been with going to Austin all along and is finding any reason to not yet commit. Meaning he is giving all the time to Sark to recruit him.

So this can be spun either way. UT could use the shot in the arm of a top flight RB, plus a surefire head-to-head win against A&M. If he doesn't go to UT after all this, that would be more of a let down for you guys.

But honestly, your RB room is pretty dang good too right now. And you guys are leading for Blue in the next class. So... LJ is honestly a luxury and not a "must have" for either of the teams, therefore won't be a big loss for either. LJ will do well in either scheme, and it all comes down to what he wants to do.

If I pay you money for a service, and you accept money for that service, we should both reasonably expect you to deliver on that service. Should you not, or if I don't pay you when you do, we have a problem. Now imagine if that shit is a black market service. Failure to comply on either side becomes a nuclear issue for both of us. There is a basic reason why most modern cheating in CFB never gets exposed - it's bad business for everyone involved.

The shit at places like Tennessee or Ole Miss is different. At Ole Miss, they went too far outside of their acceptable range of performance. At Tenn, they were fucking profligate and obvious and made themselves an easy target. They may well pull Georgia into the muck for the same reason.

ok, i totally misunderstood the premise.

so are you expecting recruiting violations smoke to rise out of College Station soon? Or not-- because of MAD?

Not much into game theory strategy or examining classic issues during the Cold War that kept us out of drifting into WW3, I see. Let's go, Kentucky. Get your shit together.

how is mutually assured destruction (the "MAD" in Cold War reference) related to college recruiting? I don't get it either. Then again, I'm an Aggie. :D

Are there recruits gunning for UT, and are there UT coaches gunning for some recruits?

I'm dense. Are they paying the players to publicly bash Texas so they're obligated to stay away from Texas in the future? Is "MAD way" some reference I'm missing?

May be that's a reference to what that TE prospect out of Dickinson wrote about TE scheme and use in Sark's O.  Donovan Green. I think he was a lean to A&M in any case and would appear to not be a big loss for UT. Neither is the OT that committed as well from the same school today.

  16. I don't believe the online fanboy board daydreams, especially the ones starting from texags.  Aside from Jaylon Jones, what 5-star corner has signed with A&M in the last 20 years? I can't think of any. I can think of many that found reasons to not commit, and then commit elsewhere including out of state.

Same goes for 5-star linebackers, except that I can't think of any 5-star linebackers A&M has signed in recent memory. The highest rated one that signed was Anthony Hines-- and he was good, hopefully he does well in NFL draft in a few weeks. Von Miller was a 3-star, as was Damontre Moore.

Recent top linebacker commits have been Antonio Doyle and Edgerrin Cooper, and both were to my mind unexpected. As was Andre White. So I guess there is something to be said about landing higher level talent at linebacker, but neither was a 5-star. And same goes for corner.

TL;dr: I guess I'll believe it when I see it.
